MADISON [Wisconsin] - Max Joseph Victor, age 82, a native Madisonian, passed peacefully Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, surrounded by his family, at Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center. Max was born Feb. 22, 1919, the son of Isadore and Miriam Victor, one of four children, Nathan, Lee, and the late Meyer Victor. He was the beloved husband of Marge (Millard) Victor since Jan. 16, 1946, until forever; father of Lynn Hegge, Bruce (Debbie) Victor, Jonathan (Carrie) Victor, and Sandy (Dan) Wasilewski; grandfather of Rhonda Check, Mark Hegge, Adam and Ryan Victor, Carson Victor, Madison Silverman and Mela Wasilewski; and great-grandfather of five. A friend to all and a leader by nature, he served his country with the United States Air Force from 1942 to 1948. After returning from his station in Alaska during World War II as a technical sergeant, Max returned home to Madison. In 1958, Max and Marge opened, owned, and operated the "Roman Inn," an institution on Park Street for many years. A senior supervisor with the state of Wisconsin Department of Revenue, Max retired with the governors special recognition and commendation. A "people person" by nature, his retirement didn't last longer than a few years, and he found himself as one of Sam's Club's first employees. Shortly thereafter he recruited Marge to join him on the Sam's Club staff, where they could spend both their days and their nights, together. Services will be held Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at 11 a.m. at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road. Friends may greet the family Friday from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711. We know we speak for many lives touched. We thought of you with love today But that is nothing new We thought about you yesterday, And the day before that, too. We think of you in silence And we often speak your name. All we have are our memories And your picture in a frame ... Your memory is a keepsake With which we'll never part. God has you in His keeping We keep you in our heart. Obituary: Warren Seifert - Class of 1934

MADISON [Wisconsin] - Warren Seifert, a third-generation Madisonian, died Wednesday Sept. 12, 2001, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center, following a short stay at University Hospital, Madison, on the renal service. He was the son of Ida (Wiedenbeck) and Victor Seifert, husband of Marie Schwenn, and with Marie, parent of Kathryn and Paul. He found a second chance at happiness when he married Edna Speth Sandberg, his former college sweetheart, and this February they celebrated 30 years together. Edna presently resides at Karmenta, where she is "rehabbing" following a fall in late August. Warren was born July 31, 1916, and celebrated his 85th birthday jointly with his daughter's 60th at a party for all their friends and family in early August. Warren graduated from Madison Central High School in 1934 and was lucky to attend the UW for two years, as it was the Depression. He worked at the post office from 1940 until 1956, when he had a heart attack. There he courageously fought to start a union because of abusive working conditions and also began the postal workers' credit union. Before and after his triple bypass surgery in 1976, he was employed in various ways, including real estate sales with Badger and Starr Realty, as the owner of The Liquor Store Inc., and manager of Pleasant View Golf Course. Warren was proud to be a Democrat and liberal with a capitol "L" (he found it difficult to understand how so many of those he loved could possibly be Republicans). He argued intelligently and passionately for things he believed in, wrote many letters to the editor of The Capital Times in support of causes he believed in and actively campaigned for democratic political candidates, most recently working many hours for the Garvey campaign for governor. He kept up his mother's perfect voting record even after he could no longer go to the polls in person. Organizations that Warren belonged to and served in leadership positions for include the BPOE (Madison Elks Lodge No. 410), the TIP Club and the East Side Business Men's Association. He and Edna belonged to St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, a longtime neighborhood euchre group, the Elks bridge marathon and euchre groups, and the Madison Dance Club. His priorities were first his beloved wife and family, followed by playing cards with his family and friends, keeping up his reputation as a master punster, learning the ins and outs of his new computer and digital camera - and then there was fishing. Warren never caught much, but he sure did love to fish! He is survived by his wife, Edna; his daughter, Kathryn (Roy Schenk) Seifert and her children, Dave Parks, Steve (Dana Burmaster) Harkins, and Vicki (Christopher O'Brien) Harkins and her son, Ryan DeBolt, all of Madison; Edna's children, Barb (Jack) Kerttula of Watertown, Wis., and their sons, Gregg (Michaela Reimert) and Mark and his daughter, Kelsey, Robert (Ginny) Sandberg of Jamestown, N.C., and her sons, Joffre and Justin Schrandt, her daughter-in-law, Sandi Sandberg and son, Michael. He is further survived by his former brother-in-law, Roger Schwenn and sister-in-law, Helen Schwenn, and their children; and many Wiedenbeck cousins. Warren was preceded in death by his parents; his younger brother, Gerald; his son, Paul; his step-son, Jim; and Jim and Sandi's two infant sons. Visitation will be at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Sherman Ave., Madison, this evening, Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., followed by an Elks service at 7 p.m. Services will be held at ST. STEPHENS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5700 Pheasant Hill Road, Monona, Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at 2 p.m. Visitation, with coffee and dessert, will precede the service, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Cremation and burial at Forest Hill Cemetery will follow at a later date. Memorials may be made to the elevator fund at the Madison Elks Lodge, as Warren thought that would be "most uplifting" for all. Ryan Funeral Home 2418 N. Sherman Ave. (608) 249-8257

Obituary: Sidney Edward Knope - Class of 1928

CHARLESTON, S.C./MADISON [Wisconsin] - Sidney Edward Knope, an almost lifelong resident of Madison, died at Roper Hospital in Charleston, S.C., after a heart attack on Sunday, June 24, 2001. He passed the following day with his children at his side. Sid was born on Feb. 23, 1911, in Madison. He was a 1928 graduate of Madison Central High School and earned an economics degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1932. He devoted 42 years to state government in Wisconsin, employed by the Industrial Commission, where he helped pioneer the administration of unemployment compensation. In his youth, Sid was the city champion speed skater. He also participated in baseball and bowling leagues. He was active in his support of the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps in the 1960s. He and his wife, Perle, were loyal supporters of the Madison Symphony, the Madison Theatre Guild and were charter members of the Friends of the Madison Civic Center. He volunteered to usher, take tickets and lead backstage tours of the Civic Center from shortly after it opened in 1980 until 1999, when he was 88. He had worked his way through college ushering for vaudeville shows and big band concerts at the Orpheum Theater and later at the Capitol Theater, which became the original Civic Center. Sid joked that he started out ushering for 27-1/2 cents per hour and worked his way up to doing it for free. He also helped write and produce stage shows in the early days of the Nakoma neighborhood and later for the West High School PTA. Although he dearly loved Madison, Sid and Perle traveled the world after his retirement. She used to tease him about never taking her out of Dane County. They built a home together on Waban Hill in Nakoma in 1938. He lived there for more than 60 years. She died in 1990. Sid moved to assisted living in Mount Pleasant, S.C., in September 2000, where he continued to follow Wisconsin State Journal articles about the Civic Center expansion with great interest. In February of this year, he celebrated his 90th birthday with four generations of his family, from five states. Real Wisconsin Badger ice cream was flown in for the occasion by his niece, Sue Small Knight. He leaves a daughter, Beth (Archie) Johnston of Edisto Beach, S.C.; and a son, David (Muriel) of Atlanta, Ga. He had four grandchildren, Mike (Amy) Thompson of Houston, Texas, and Dan (Vicki) Thompson, Laurie Hahn and Jonathan Knope, all of the Atlanta area. His great-grandchildren are Lana, Austin and Heather Thompson, and Mark and Jason Hahn, all of the Atlanta area. Nieces and nephews include Sue Knight and Don Small of Madison, and Phil Small of Germantown, Wis. Sid was preceded in death by his wife, Perle; and his sister, Wilma, both of Madison; sister-in-law, Bonnie Small of Princeton, N.J.; and brother-in-law, Ford Small of Madison. There will be a graveside service in Madison at Forest Hills Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2001, and at 3:30 p.m. the family will be available for visitation at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road. Services today for last of the Quisling Brothers
Dr. Rolf Quisling, who died at age 91 in Florida, was one of the four who founded the clinic

By Valeria Davis-Humphrey
Suburban Reporter

Dr. Rolf A. Quisling, 91, the last survivor of the four brothers who founded Madison's Quisling Clinic, died May 20 at his Destin, Fla., residence.

Vibrant until his recent brief illness, Quisling retired in 1999 after 66 years of medical practice here. He was within days of celebrating his 92nd birthday.

"It's difficult to summon all the superlatives to describe Doctor Rolf,' who was a gentle, kind and soft-spoken, yet a humorous and congenial man," said Middleton Mayor Dan Ramsey.

"He was a very good doctor, as he doctored me occasionally," Ramsey said. "I've known him for 44 years. He used to be my doctor when I was a kid. I was saddened to see that he had passed away."

Quisling and his wife of 59 years, the former Marie Sweeney, had lived throughout Dane County and pursued his second business, the Evergreen Sod Farm, in the town of Middleton.

"He was a community resident and not just a city resident," Ramsey said. "He was a very, very nice person to have in the community."

Quisling, a physician and surgeon specializing in ear, nose, throat and plastic surgery of the head and neck, was born with his twin brother, Gunnar, in Madison on May 25, 1909.

Rolf Quisling graduated from UW-Madison and completed medical school at the age of 21 at the University of Illinois-Chicago. A life- long researcher, he also earned post-graduate specialty degrees at the University of Berlin and the University of Vienna and served in the Army from 1943 to 1946.

Sverre, Abe, Gunnar and Rolf Quisling founded the Quisling Clinic in 1933. An architectural landmark in the Art Moderne style, the former clinic at 2 W. Gorham St., is now condominiums. The Quisling brothers also built the Edgewater Hotel and the Quisling Towers. Quisling is survived by three children, Dr. John Quisling of Mazomanie, Attorney Rolf Quisling of Charlotte, N.C. and Tricia Rennicke of Destin, Fla., and six grandchildren. Services are scheduled for today at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Middleton.

The last surviving Dr. Dean of the Dean Clinic family died Sunday atthe age of 84. Dr. James L. Dean died Sunday of cancer in Sturgeon Bay.
