Obituary: Jill Ann Schiro Jamison - Class of 1968

WINNETKA, ILL./MADISON - Jill Ann Schiro Jamison, age 57, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, at Midwest Palliative and Hospice Care in Winnetka, Ill. Born and raised in Madison, Jill was a longtime resident. In 1979, she met and married Scott Jamison, also of Madison, and moved to Lexington, Kentucky to share their love of horses. In Lexington, both Jill and Scott worked at the fabled Spendthrift Farms. Jill's fondest memories from that period were of watching the foals romping with their mothers in the morning mist. In 1981 the couple's daughter Tyler was born. The family moved back to Wisconsin to start a horse farm on the Jamison country homestead in Muscoda, where their son Sean was born in 1984. During this time, they were owners in a racehorse, Hurdy Gurdy Man, trained by Wayne Lucas, and often raced by the renowned jockey, Angel Cordera. When Scott was offered a job as marketing manager for a thoroughbred track in Oklahoma, the family followed him there. Eventually, they returned to the Midwest, and resided in Winnetka, Illinois where Jill thoroughly enjoyed the role of wife and mother. Not ready to become an empty nester, when the children went off to college so did Jill, becoming house mother to the Delta-Delta-Delta sorority on Langdon Street, commuting between Madison and Winnetka. In those days, it was easy to find the "Tri Delt" house; the one with the spotless front yard. Jill worked tirelessly on that house, planting flowers, keeping greenery in front door pots, and making sure the girls all felt pride in their home away from home. The overarching theme of Jill's life was that of mother. She took immense pride in her role. Mother to her two wonderful children, Tyler and Sean. Mother to the foals she brought into the world. Mother to her sorority "daughters." Mother to her pets, Kodie and Spencer. Mother to her numerous nieces and nephews who have learned to care for others as she cared for them. During her illness, Jill became mother to herself balancing traditional and alternative treatments in her own way. She impressed dozens of healthcare workers of all disciplines with her tireless dedication to her health, nutrition and mind-body work. And they routinely went out of their way to help her on her journey. Jill is survived by her husband, Scott; her children, Tyler and Sean; her mother, Audrey Yost; her sisters, Jan (Schiro) Bawden and Carrie Schiro; and her brothers, Paul Schiro and Brian Schiro, and their families. She is preceded in death by her father, Damian. The family extends a grateful thank you to Jill's hospice team, Jan, Margaret, and Dr. Katz, and the entire staff of Midwest Palliative and Hospice Care, and Jill's spiritual guide, Bonnie Speno of Northshore Healing, who helped fill Jill's journey with dignity and grace. A lifelong lover of animals, Jill had suggested that memorials be made to the ASPCA at www.aspca.org.

Obituary: Judith (Myers) Behrend - Class of 1956

MADISON - Judy Behrend, age 69, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 10, 2008. She was born Judith Marilyn Myers on July 21, 1938. A lifelong resident of Madison, growing up around the Vilas Zoo area, she was a 1956 graduate of Central High School. At 17, she quickly attained a position with the Air Force at Truax Field. In a forty year career as a civil servant, she started as a supply clerk and retired as the management assistant to the Deputy Adjutant General of the Wisconsin National Guard. Her position brought excitement and a great sense of accomplishment, traveling around this country in military aircrafts and riding in tanks and armored personnel carriers. Judy's career was highlighted with numerous honors, including the Minuteman Award, presented to her at the Pentagon. As dedicated as she was to her job, nothing brought as much pride to her heart as her family. After marrying her high school sweetheart, Phil Behrend, their son Marc was born. Thus begun a long love affair with hockey. Judy was a proud mom and a faithful fan in the seats as Marc played for the Wisconsin Badgers, the USA Olympic team in 1984 at Sarajavo, Yugoslavia and the NHL's Winnipeg Jets of Canada. And it only got better when her son became a sixth generation firefighter for the Madison Fire Department. But, her biggest reward in life came in the form of her two beloved grandchildren, granddaughter Krista and grandson, Eric. She was a loving mother and an even more loving grandma. In a perfect world for Judy, everyday would have been Christmas. Instead, she went to a better world. She will be greatly missed by the family who loved her and all those who knew her. Judy is survived by her son, Marc Behrend; granddaughter, Krista Behrend; grandson, Eric Behren; her father, Dale Myers; two sisters, Shirley Ryan and Lynda (Marc) McCarville; a brother, Garry (Sue) Myers; nieces, Kathy (Mike) Anderson and Lori (Joe) Hewitt; nephews, Paul (Tammy) Ryan, Dennis (Pam) Ryan, Tom (Robin) Ryan, Dale Ryan, Shadd Weiss, and Dustin Weiss; 13 great-nieces and nephews; and her two very special little girls, Natalie and Paige. She was preceded in death by her mother, Marilyn Fisher; and her brother-in-law, Paul Ryan. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 13, 2008, at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Obituary: Jane Mackinnon Morrison Webster - Class of 1934

MADISON - Jane Mackinnon Morrison Webster passed over peacefully June 1, 2008. Jane was born on Jan. 16, 1916, in Morrisonville, Wis. She was extremely proud of her ancestry, being descended from pioneering Scottish families, Morrison, Caldwell, Mackinnon, and Caldow, who settled the Arlington Prairie in Dane and Columbia Counties in the 1840s. She was daughter to Colin Mackinnon Morrison and Mary Elizabeth Caldwell. Her childhood was joyful and characterized by the close associations with her aunts, uncles, and numerous cousins, several of whom were the result of three separate marriages between the Morrison and the Caldwell families. On her 75th birthday, she was surrounded by her many cousins and they were remembering the day she was born. She moved to Madison at the age of five when her father took a position with the State Board of Bank Examiners and they lived a block from the Capitol Square. She graduated from Brayton Elementary School and Central High School and attended the University of Wisconsin. While at Madison Central, she met the love of her life, Thomas Alden Webster, who preceded her in death in 1993 after enjoying nearly 60 years of marriage. They had two children, the Rev. Colin Thomas (Sue) and Dr. Stephen Alden (Susan). She has been further blessed by 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She was a powerful matriarch to her family, passing along to them a strong sense of the importance of dedication to family, love of God, and humble service to her beliefs and commitments. To the end, she was pragmatic and positive, coping with the consequences of the frailties of the aging body. Her life was driven by the pleasure she derived from being with her family. Her sense of humor, tolerant values, and open spirit endeared her to friends from every generation and she was deeply loved and admired. Her perseverance and resolute attitude inspired many. She was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church for 80 years. Lately, she appreciated Bethel Lutheran's television services. When Tom retired they took up vacationing in their Winnebago motor home. Countless happy hours were spent touring North America. Their time together during these years brought them both great contentment and enjoyment, as well as a bit of complaining when the "rig" broke down. They spent many happy years living on Monona Bay and Jane liked watching the duck couples paddling about. She will be especially missed for her Scottish shortbread and "peppernuts" (cooking traditions that she fully expected her offspring to continue). Her associations were important to her and provided many networks and happy memories. She was a member of the Monona Bay Garden Club, Eastern Shrine, Daughters of the Nile, ASPA, Ladies Auxiliary of Elks 410, and the Whitcomb Gals. After her children were raised she worked at Nelson's Books and Stationary in the Shorewood Shopping Center. She has gone to join her loved ones and prepare a place for those yet to come. She is deeply missed by all those who were close to her. Her passing leaves a deep void while the memories of her bring joy and inspiration. Her passing truly marks the close of a generation; the product of strong and resilient prairie farmers, dedicated to family and unambiguous values. Her family would like to thank the staff at Meriter/Capitol Lakes Health Center for their tender and loving care. A Memorial Service celebrating her time with us and the promise of the resurrection will be held at CHRIST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 944 E. Gorham St., Madison on July 6, 2008 at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Presbyterian Church and the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee Haiti Project. Obituary: William Dean Engler

CHILTON - William Dean Engler, age 96, of Chilton, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, April 20, 2008, with his family at his side. He was born on Feb. 14, 1912, in Madison. His mother was Theresa Krenz Engler and his father was William Martin Engler. Also preceding him in death were his sisters, Gerturde Schmitz (Edward) of Madison and Mildred Wirka (Herman) of Madison. After attending Blessed Sacrament Catholic Grade School and Edgewood and West High in Madison, he graduated from Madison Central High School and went on to school at Worcester Academy in Worcester, Mass. Returning to Madison, he worked as a car salesman for Pyramid Motors. On Sept. 1, 1934, he married Virginia Elizabeth Knauf of Chilton. He later owned and operated a Standard Oil gas and service station on University Avenue in Madison until World War II. During the war he worked at Badger Ordinance Powder Plant near Baraboo where he was supervisor in charge of storage and shipment of all black powder used in making war explosives. After the war, in 1945, he went to work for his father-in-law, William N. Knauf, at Knauf and Tesch Company in Chilton. In 1964 after both the former owners of Knauf and Tesch Company had died (William N. Knauf and Roland Tesch), he purchased the company and eventually renamed it Kaytee Products. Knauf and Tesch had been family-owned dating back to 1866 when Nicolas Knauf opened a grain and feed business in Sheboygan, eventually moving to Brillion and then Chilton. Knauf and Tesch operated a general store in Chilton, a grain elevator in Chilton with branch elevators at Mapleleaf, Kaukauna and Greenleaf as well as a dairy farm in the Chilton area. Upon purchasing the company, he discontinued the local feed business and focused on wild bird food and pet food for birds and small animals on a regional and eventual national basis. He was a pioneer in producing wild bird food for sale into the mass market and national chain grocery stores. Under his creative direction and determination, he laid the groundwork for Kaytee Products to become a national leader. In 1981 he sold the business to his three children and continued on as president until 1984. Thereafter he was a member of the Board of Directors until Kaytee was sold to Central Garden and Pet in 1997. He was an active supporter of the Chilton community. He was a charter member of the Chilton Chamber of Commerce, serving as its president twice; during which time he was instrumental in getting a hospital in Chilton and also assisted in several fund raising drives for the construction and expansion of the Calumet Memorial Hospital. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and former Grand Knight. He was a charter member of the Chilton AFS Chapter and was a former member of the Chilton Kiwanis Club and Chilton Rotary Club. As a member of Good Shepard Catholic Parish (formally St. Mary's), he served on several parish councils. In 1956 he and his wife, Virginia, built a house on a wooded lot where he enjoyed its natural surroundings until he died. His hobbies included golf, some fishing and daily walking. He became a familiar figure walking around Chilton or on the beach in Florida where he often stopped and talked with his many friends. In his later years, he enjoyed traveling. His favorite leisure time, however, was spent on his power boats in Florida which he operated with great pride. After his first wife, Virginia Knauf Engler, died in 1973, he married his wife's widowed sister, Charlotte Knauf Geary of Oshkosh, who also preceded him in death in 1998. He and Charlotte were married 24 years. They enjoyed extensive travel abroad and spent many enjoyable winters in Florida. He especially enjoyed his family. He was well known for giving advice and positive words of encouragement to family and friends. He is survived by his two sons, William Engler, Jr., (Gail) of Chilton, Michael Engler (Kathleen) of Crystal Lake; and a daughter, Virginia Gilmore (James) of Fond du Lac. Also surviving are four step-children, Robert Geary (Judy) of Waupaca, Lucy Casey Geary Ripp (Mickey) of Hales Corners, William Geary of Oshkosh and Victoria Geary Neelis (Kevin) of Manitowoc. Mr. Engler is survived by 13 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Alice Jackson of Madison; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Knauf of Grayslake, Ill. Mr. Engler was cared for in his last several years by a group of wonderful and dedicated caregivers. Special recognition should be given to Rachel Schroeder of the Affinity Visiting Nurses Program, for her loving care during his final days. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2008, at the GOOD SHEPHERD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 54 E. Main St., in Chilton with the Rev. Bob Kollath officiating. Friends may call at the WIETING FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 411 W. Main St., in Chilton from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday April 23, 2008, and again on Thursday at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. when family prayers will be held.
