Obituary: Ernestine (Mitchell) Bugbee - Class of 1961

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Ernestine Mitchell Bugbee of Providence, R.I., died peacefully Tuesday Oct. 3 2006, at the Phillip Huiltar Inpatient Hospice Center in Providence, following a long illness. Ernestine was born in Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 18, 1943, the daughter of Edward D and Ernestine Roberts Mitchell. She grew up in a large and loving family in Madison and graduated from Central High School. As an undergraduate at Bennett College in Greensboro, N.C. she participated in the student sit-ins and boycotts that helped focus national attention on America's civil rights movement and inspired similar actions by students in 54 cities across nine states. Upon graduation from Bennett, Ernestine's interest in fashion and style led her to New York, where she wrote marketing copy for Allied Stores and Mademoiselle before becoming director of public relations for the professional products division L'Oreal. Her success designing and fabricating custom tablecloths, napkins and table arrangements made her a sought-after expert both on national television programs and in the consumer press. Following four years in Harrogate, England, she and her husband relocated to Rhode Island, and their present home on Providence's east side. Her volunteer commitments included the Women's Center for Domestic Abuse and ASSE Student Exchange. Until forced to retire because of her illness, Ernestine was the Director of the Community Kitchen Culinary program for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. A member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church, she taught church school and was involved in many activities focused on helping the less fortunate members of the Providence community. The beloved wife of Robin Alexander Bugbee for more than 35 years, Ernestine had a great sense of humor and a magical laugh--both frequently directed at herself. To her love of plaid, music and children she brought her big heart, great common sense, an unshakeable belief in peoples essential goodness and an eagerness to help others however she could. She touched the hearts and helped change the lives of many. She is survived by her devoted husband; her sister, Marilyn Mitchell of New York City (their brother Don predeceased her); her brothers-in-law, Christopher Bugbee of Las Angeles, Calif., and Bruce Bugbee of Napa, Calif.; her nieces and nephews, Sara, Erin, Isabelle, Rachael, Byron and Colin; her godchildren, Christopher Altchek and Tamara Brown; and a vital community of family and friends throughout the world who knew the gentleness of her touch and loved her as dearly as Ernestine loved them and every minute of her wonderful life. She will live forever in our hearts. Funeral services will held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, at ST. MARTIN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, Orchard Ave., Providence, R.I. She attended school from elementary through high school (Randall, Hoyt and Central) in Madison, always ranking at the top of her class and was a spelling bee champion. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, she taught elementary and middle school in the Madison public school system. Those who knew academic talent wondered why she didn't go directly to graduate school, but she reminded them that sixth grade was a pivotal year in children's lives. A few years later, she returned for her master's and doctorate degrees from the UW-Madison and moved into teaching, research, and leadership roles at the University of Maryland, Washington State University, Michigan State University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and held a visiting scholar post in the Department of Psychology at Stanford University. She is survived and will be missed by her husband of 20 years, Mark Gillingham of Chicago; a sister, Betty Harris Custer (Corkey) of Madison; a brother, Bob Harris (Nancy) of San Carlos, Calif.; nieces and nephews including, Genevieve Custer Weeks (Andrew) of Emeryville, Calif., and Jamie Custer of Madison; and countless friends and colleagues, including former husband, Jim Garner of Madison. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth Meyers Harris and Bob (Boomer) Harris. Her life was one of learning both as a student and teacher. She was a voracious reader and author of four books, including "Hanging Out: Community Based After School Programs for Children," "Metacognition and Reading Comprehension," "Beliefs About Text" and "Instruction with Text" and a hundred articles. Her writing attempted to shine light on obscure or difficult problems. Ruth believed in place - that context mattered. She studied her own context and that of others whether it was her own teaching or a child struggling to read. Ruth was a brilliant teacher and speaker. Her courses were always in high demand. Parents of her middle-school students jockeyed to get their kids in her room. She had more graduate students than she should have had and still had time to help many students who were not her own. She was sought after as a lecturer across the country and could speak to thousands and seem to reach each audience member individually. She got the highest teaching ratings ever given by the department for a psychology course, which was taught to three locations at once using a video feed. Even in her final weeks of life as illness took its toll, she was sending forth a proposal for a new book. There will be a celebration of Ruth's life and work at a future date close to Thanksgiving. Proceeds from her book with her husband, "Hanging Out," were given to the Children's Defense Fund. It is the family's desire to benefit a local program that also works with children's needs, and they ask that memorials in her name be made to the Community Education Center, an innovative learning center to be built by the Wexford Ridge Neighborhood Center. Checks may be sent to the Wexford Ridge Neighborhood Center, 7011 Flower Lane A/C, Madison, WI 53717; or the Madison Community Foundation, 2 Science Ct., Madison, WI 53711, earmarked for the Ruth Garner memorial to the Community Education Center, which is an endeavor chaired by Ruth's sister Betty Harris Custer. Ruth felt passionately about many things: her work, her family, good wine and food, beautiful vistas and sunsets, politics, the state of the world and its young people and how they are educated. The world has been a better place for her presence and her passion and she will be sorely missed.

Obituary: Dona J. (Strmiska) Sprecher - Class of 1949

LELAND - Dona J. Sprecher, age 74, died on Wednesday, June 21, 2006, unexpectedly at her home in Leland. She was born in Stanton, Neb. on Dec. 3, 1931, the daughter of the late Carl and Edna (Vollbrecht) Strmiska. The family moved to the Prairie du Sac area during her grade school years, moving to Madison in her high school years. She graduated in 1949 from Madison Central High School. She married the love of her life of 56 years, Edwin "Junior" Sprecher of Leland on Sept. 10, 1949. He swept her off her feet at a New Year's Eve dance in Prairie du Sac and they never stopped dancing. She and Junior have owned and operated Sprecher's Tavern in Leland since that time. Both she and Junior have become an institution in the area with many generations walking through the door of their establishment. She was known in the community as quite the feisty lady who would tell it like it is, always had a good joke to share, and loved to be a matchmaker during her years in the tavern. She loved her garden and flowers throughout the years. She enjoyed raising beagles and traveling to American Kennel Club dog shows with Junior throughout the Midwest; bringing home many trophies and ribbons. She had a zest for travel, visiting many states, Canada and England. Her most memorable experience was landing by helicopter on a glacier in Alaska. She was a loving and attentive mother to daughter, Ann (Kevin) Jensen of Windsor; son, Mark (Colleen) Sprecher of Stevens Point; and daughter, Amy Sprecher of Leland. She is survived by her loving husband, Junior; her children; grandchildren, Todd Wiatrok (Shelia Konichek) of Columbus, Becky Wiatrok of Madison, Cassandra Wiatrok of Baraboo and Lindsy Wiatrok of Windsor; great-grandchildren, Kyla and Nathan Wiatrok; a brother, Robert (Carol) Strmiska of Madison; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, an aunt and uncle, and many treasured friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister and brother; a grandson; a nephew, Thomas Strmiska; and several aunts and uncles. Family will be celebrating Dona's life on Sunday, July 2, 2006, at SPRECHER'S TAVERN in Leland beginning at 11 a.m. until the cows come home. Funeral services will be held at ST. JOHN'S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 100 Oak St., Prairie du Sac, at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 3, 2006, with Pastor Fred Rilling officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Salvation Army or St. John's Lutheran Church. We weren't ready to have you leave us, there was still so much to say and do. Thank you for all of the love and lessons you have shared that have made us who we are. You sacrificed so much for us and for that we will always be grateful. You have left special memories that will forever be treasured in our hearts. Hooverson Funeral Home Sauk City (608) 643-6430

Obituary: Dr. Charles Allen Neuhauser - Class of 1950

MONONA/ MADISON - Dr. Charles Allen Neuhauser, age 74, died on Tuesday, June 13, 2006, surrounded by his family, at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness. He was born on Feb. 19, 1932, in Milwaukee, to George and Esther (Schulz) Neuhauser. Charles moved to Madison when he was a year old, attended Washington Grade School and graduated from Madison Central High School in 1950. He attended UW-Madison, where he played on the UW baseball team as a catcher, and graduated from UW-Medical School in 1961. After active duty in the U.S. Army, he served many years in the 44th General Hospital Reserve Unit. Charles married Carol Mack on July 14, 1955, and was fortunate to celebrate their golden anniversary with family and friends last summer. He was a respected physician at East Madison Clinic, which later became Dean Clinic, and finished his career at Dean Arcand Park, eventually retiring in 1992. The patients under his care often commented to his family that he was "the best" and they missed his personal and professional care after his retirement. These comments brought much joy to his family that Charles had made a positive impact on other's lives. He loved spending time with his family and shared his love of his hobbies with them. Many fun times were spent together hunting, fishing, camping, golfing and gardening. Charles was a Monona youth baseball coach for many years and an avid fan at his kids' and grandkids' many sporting events. He continued playing his favorite "thinking man's game" (baseball) with the old City Industrial League, played recreational softball in Monona with many dear friends and was a charter member of the WAGA golf league with other good buddies. Charles is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carol; a daughter, Chris (Greg) Percy; two sons, Curt (Sue) and Eric (Kim); five grandchildren, Tyler, Michael, Brett, Cameron and Kendra; a sister, Judy (Paul) Baumgartner; mother-in-law, Caroline Mack; and many other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Lois Mott. Memorial services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2006, with the Rev. Susanne Burwell presiding. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or charity of donor's choice. The family wishes to thank the many doctors who worked so diligently on his behalf and to the staff at St. Mary's for their wonderful care. Like a ship that's left its moorings And sails bravely out to sea, So someone dear has sailed away In calm serenity; But there's promise of a greater joy Than earth can have in store For God has planned a richer life Beyond the unseen shore. "Charles will be dearly missed by his family. We wish him peace." Gunderson East Funeral & Cremation Centers 5203 Monona Drive (608) 221-5420

Obituary: Dorothy Collins DeWitt - Class of 1929

MADISON - Dorothy Collins DeWitt passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at Attic Angel Place. She was born on May 10, 1911, in Madison, the daughter of William H. and Dora (Kinney) Collins. After graduation from Madison Central High School, Dorothy attended the University of Wisconsin where she received a master's degree in Comparative Literature in 1937. Her second master's degree - this in Social Work - was earned at Wayne State University in 1965, the same year she became a proud grandmother. She was employed by TIME magazine in New York from 1937 until her marriage in 1939 to Thomas Ward DeWitt of Pelham, N.Y. Tom had completed requirements for a PhD in Physical Chemistry and won a post doctorate fellowship to Johns Hopkins University. That began a series of long distance moves, many new communities, many new friends and in every location, many opportunities for Dorothy to do volunteer work. Until very late in her life, Dorothy continued to volunteer herself and her time. She was a regular at St. Marys Day Care Center. Her house was full of foreign college graduate students who brought their compositions to Dorothy for editorial comment. Dorothy played classical piano and so it followed that many graduate music students enjoyed her grand piano and her genuine interest. She is survived by her two daughters, Suki and Carol; three grandchildren, Jennifer, John and Jess; and three great-grandchildren, Caleb, Jack, and Aubrey. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tom in 1991; four brothers, William, John, Paul and Joseph; and beloved sister, Catherine, who lived for many years with Dorothy in Attic Angels and recently died in 2004. Dorothy's family would like to acknowledge the loving attention of her niece and god child, Joan Lane of Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Dorothy's other niece and her husband, Carol (Jerry) Sedik of Belvidere, Ill. who came to Madison every Tuesday for years to honor their aunts and take them on adventures. Their love and devotion are exceptional and rare. Our family is so grateful to her friend and companion, Sharon Borland, who in caring for Dorothy made cheer a top priority, followed closely by lots of hugs. Dorothy's children, coming from out of state for extended visits, were witness to day and night, week after week, year after year of tender care by the staff at Attic Angel Place. To help the elderly through challenging times seems the most noble of professions. Surely Dorothy would want us all to volunteer where needed. We gladly send her to peace, but she will be missed in this world by all those whose lives she has touched. Joyce-Ryan Funeral Home & Cremation Services 5701 Odana Road (608) 274-1000
