Obituary: Edith L. (Bennett) Remy - Class of 1958

COTTAGE GROVE [Wisconsin] - Edith L. Remy, age 61, died on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at the University Hospital. She was born on Jan. 28, 1940, in Stoughton, the daughter of Clifford and Muriel (Sproule) Bennett. She graduated from Central High School in 1958. Edith married Richard Remy on Nov. 27, 1959, at St. James Catholic Church in Madison. She was owner of Central Service Company in Madison from 1985-2001. She was a member of the Madison Builders Association, N.A.R.I., and also St. Dennis Catholic Church. Edith is survived by her husband, Richard; a daughter, Deborah (Randy) Berg of Watertown; two sons, Gary (Barb) of New Orleans, and Jeffrey (Sheryl) of Cottage Grove; three grandchildren, Rachel, Michael, and Matthew Remy; four sisters, Anna Zick of Fla., Margaret Heer of Mo., Frances Anderson of Ariz., and Jane (Frank) Walczyk of Alaska; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Robert Bennett; and a sister, Bertha Dreyer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road with Father Jason Hesseling presiding. Burial will be in St. Raphael's Frenchtown Cemetery. Obituary: Robert Eugene Kohl - Class of 1938

MCFARLAND/MADISON [Wisconsin] - Robert Eugene Kohl, age 81, died on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center, Fitchburg. He was born on Feb. 18, 1920, in Madison, a son of the late Lloyd and Helen (Claus) Kohl. He graduated from Madison Central High School in 1938. He served in the United States Marine Corps as a staff sergeant from 1937 until 1945. He was united in marriage to Laverne M. Jehn on Dec. 27, 1947, in Okauchee, Wis. Robert retired as a supervisor from Oscar Mayer, where he was employed for 31 years. He was a member of the Elks Club, McFarland Lions Club, Christ the King Catholic Church and St. Peter's Catholic Church. He is survived by four sons, Bill (Patrice) Kohl of Lugoff, S.C., Tom (Mona) Kohl of Fort Atkinson, Tim (Margaret) Kohl of Middleton, and Eugene (Susan) Kohl of Greenfield; a daughter, Francey (Ron Reis) Kohl of Woodbine, Md.; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Susan), Alyson, Joel, Jamie (Sam), Jesse, Josh (Susan), Benny and Madison Kohl, and Adam and Sarah Reis; and a great-granddaughter, Ivy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laverne, in May 1992; and his parents. A memorial gathering will be held from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at OLSON-HOLZHUTER-CRESS FUNERAL HOME, Stoughton, with a prayer service at 2:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to HospiceCare Inc. in lieu of flowers. Obituary: Vera Clara Jeanette (Johr) Lee - Class of 1931

WATERTOWN [Wisconsin] - Vera Clara Jeanette (Johr) Lee, age 88, of Watertown, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 16, 2002, at Watertown Memorial Hospital. She was born July 30, 1913, in Merrill, Wis., the daughter of Otto and Selma (Grueneberg) Johr. She graduated from Madison Central High School, and went on to receive a bachelor's degree from UW-Whitewater in 1935. She married Donald Lee June 9, 1938, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Madison. Vera was employed as secretary to the superintendent of schools in West Chicago, Ill. She also had been a teacher at the Jefferson and Johnson Creek high schools. She was elected to Pi Omega Pi, an honorary fraternity, as well as Alpha Sigma sorority. She was a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Jefferson, and was recently a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Watertown. Survivors include two daughters, Sandra (Carl) Werth of Waterford, Mich., and Karen Fontaine of Miller Beach, Ind.; two sons, Tom (Mary) Lee of Martinez, Ga., and John (Berta) Lee of Glenview, Ill.; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, on Jan. 29, 1980; and her parents. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, Watertown. The Rev. James A. Mattek will officiate, with burial at Roselawn Memorial Park, Monona. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the church. Memorials, if desired, may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church, Watertown, and Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Ind. Hafemeister Funeral Home, Watertown, is in charge of arrangements.

Obituary: Isabel W. Brinkman - Class of 1931

MADISON/ MILWAUKEE - Isabel W. Brinkman, age 88, died on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at St. Marys Care Center, Madison. Isabel was born on Sept. 7, 1913, to Henry and Delia Brinkman. Born and raised in Madison, Isabel graduated from Madison Central High School in 1931. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and graduated in 1935 with a bachelor of science degree. Isabel taught home economics and typing during her teaching career. She taught at Patch Grove, Belleville, Oconomowoc and retired from her teaching career at Longfellow school in Wauwatosa in 1978. Isabel was a member of Woodman's Circle and the Madison chapter of Eastern Star. She was also a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Milwaukee. Isabel lived most of her adult life in Milwaukee. Isabel will always be loved and remembered for her generosity, caring ways, impeccable etiquette, and her love for children, the homemade sugar cookies, peanut butter cookies, brownies, fudge and the mittens she knitted for so many people. Her family and friends will dearly miss her. She is survived by nieces, Ruth-Ann "Ruthie" (Dex) Hess of Madison, and Sandra L. Coleman, address unknown; and nephews, Ronald K. (Cindy) Coleman of Wyocena, and William W. (Loretta) Coleman of Mosinee. She is also survived by great-nieces, Catherine A. Hess, Madison, and Tracy L. Coleman of Madison; and great-nephews, Jonathan A. (Sherry) Hess of Madison, and Billy Joe (Tammi) Coleman of Hartford; a great-great-nephew, "Little One" Beau of Madison; and a special step-great-nephew, Jerry (Jennifer) Schulke and their daughter, Cera Ann, of El Paso, Texas. She is also survived by several cousins and other great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ruth M. Coleman; a great-nephew, Marvin A. Hess III; a great-nephew, Kenneth R. Coleman; and cousins, Harley Moore, Robert J. Moore and George Moore. Ruth-Ann would like to express special thanks to Aunt Isabel's loyal and good friends, especially Mary Winters, Joe Romas, Maxine Moore and Kathy Moore. Special thanks to St. Luke's Hospital, Milwaukee, and St. Marys Care Center, Madison. Funeral services will be on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at 11 a.m. at ROSELAWN MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY CHAPEL, 601 E. Obituary: Donald John Cox, Jr. - Class of 1963

OREGON [Wisconsin] - Donald John Cox Jr., age 56, died on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002. He was born on July 25, 1945 in Memphis Tenn., to Donald John Sr. and Sadie (Maxwell) Cox. Donald graduated from Central High School. He served in the US Army Reserves from 1967 until 1971. Donald was employed by Nicolet Industries as an inventory control specialist for 15 years. He is survived by his sons, Brett (Ann) Cox of Oregon, and Chad Cox of Madison; a granddaughter, Macie Cox of Oregon; two sisters, Marylin (Frank) Urban of Waunakee and Jean Healey of Sidney, NB. Donald was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Franklin Cox. Obituary: Vincent J. Tortorice

MADISON [Wisconsin] - Vincent J. Tortorice, age 92, passed away on Friday Jan. 4, 2002, at Sunny Hill Health Care Center. He was born in Madison on April 13, 1909, the son of Joseph and Mary (Labella) Tortorice. Vince grew up in the Greenbush neighborhood and graduated from Central High School. He married Rose Sansone on Sept. 9, 1935. Vince was a brick layer and stone Mason, retiring from the UW-Madison. He was a 50 year plus active member of the brick layer and stone mason Union Local #13. Vince was a 70 year member and past president of the Bersaglieri Club. He was a very active sportsman, hunter, and fisherman. Vince was a member of St. James Parish. He is survived by his son Joseph (Audrey) of Tucson, Ariz.; two daughters, Mary (Ed) Narum of Fitchburg, Wis., and Josephine (John) Baker of Madison, Wis.; five grandchildren, Leighann (Terin) Miller of Jersey City, N.J., Paul (Su) McDonald of Seoul, Korea, Todd (Pam) McDonald of Alexandria, La., Bonnie (Charles) Buckler of Apex, N.C., and Lisa Tortorice of Tucson, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews. Vince was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rose, on Feb. 25, 1998; three brothers; and four sisters. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m. Private family services will be held. Obituary: A. Evelyn "Evie" Ritchie - Class of 1933

MADISON [Wisconsin] - A. Evelyn "Evie" Ritchie, age 86, died after a long illness at Meriter Health Care Center on Monday, December 31, 2001. She was born July 27, 1915, in Madison, to John and Anna (Dienberg) Boyle. She graduated from Central High School and was a member of St. Raphael Cathedral, Moose Lodge, Eagles, Elks, American Legion, and the VFW. Evie is survived by a nephew, Michael Boyle of Spokane, Wash.; many great nieces and nephews and special friends; especially two dear friends, Lolita Jordan and Alice Speth, both of Madison; sister-in-law, Ruth Boyle of Madison; and a goddaughter, Janice Kuehl of Helenville. She is preceded in death by her parents, and five brothers, Kenneth, William, Vern, Jack and Ted Boyle; a sister, Vera Zeloff; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. RAPHAEL CATHEDRAL, 222 West Main St., at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 4, 2002. Father Douglas Dushack will officiate. Burial will be held at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery. Obituary: Rosaline Tough - Class of 1920

MADISON [Wisconsin] - Rosalind Tough, age 98, died at a local hospital on Monday, Dec. 31, 2001. Miss Tough was born on Jan. 27, 1903, in Dundee. Scotland, and came to the United States with her family in 1912. She attended schools in Madison and graduated from Madison Central High School in 1920. Miss Tough received a B.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1924, and a M.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1925. She earned her Ph.D. degree in economics, with specialization in urbanism and housing, from Northwestern University in 1933. Following graduation she served as an associate economics analyst with the Federal Emergency Relief Administration in Washington, D.C. She joined the faculty of Hunter College in New York City in 1934 and continued until her retirement as emeritus professor in 1973. Through her academic career she was a member of a number of professional and honorary organizations. In Madison she belonged to the Bascom Hill Society and the Dickens Fellowship. She continued her educational pursuits when she audited 23 courses at the University of Wisconsin between 1984 and 1992. She is survived by her cousins, Barbara Haddon (Gordon) Johnsen of Madison; Janet (Haddon) Hoffmann of Lake Oswego, Ore.; and her cousin's wife, Audrey (Schumaker) Haddon of Bakersfield, Calif. She was predeceased by her father and mother, Edward and Jessie (Haddon) Tough; her sister, Evelyn (John) Crowe; her nephew, 1st Lt. Douglas Crowe, who lost his life in Vietnam in 1968; and her cousin, Douglas Haddon. Appreciation is extended to the staff of the Meriter Health Center and Interim Healthcare for the fine care Rosalind received from 1955 through 2001.
