THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS

This blog is serving as an archive for obituaries published after 1989 of women and men who attended Madison Central High School. As of today, the only entries are of obituaries published in Madison, Baraboo, or Portage newspapers during 2005 in which the text specifically indicates that the deceased attended Central. If you know of other Central alumni who died during 2005 and whose obituaries are not included here, please contact me by email and let me know when and where the obituary was published.

You may certainly browse the entries on this blog, but links to all the obituaries posted here will also be listed on the primary blog for Madison Central High School alumni. The URL for that primary blog is http://madisonchshhistory.blogspot.com/

As I locate additional obituaries, I will post them here and notify you of the updated information via the primary blog.

03/07/2006 - Joseph Wergin's daughter, Ginny, sent an email with a link to a Doug Moe column in The Capital Times about her father. You may read it by clicking HERE. The Wisconsin State Journal also published a tribute to Joseph Wergin, written by Brenda Ingersoll. You may read it by clicking HERE. Moe, by the way, mentions Central High School in his tribute to Joseph Wergin. Ingersoll does not, but unlike Moe she's not a townie, so she may not be familiar with the long and illustrious history of Central High School.

Obituary: Joseph Lieberman - Class of 1934

MADISON - Joseph Lieberman, age 89, passed away on Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, at St. Marys Care Center. Joe was born on Sept. 21, 1916, the son of Solomon and Freda (Wolmensky) Lieberman. He grew up in Madison's old Greenbush neighborhood and was a lifelong resident of Madison. As a child, Joe loved to play softball, first at Longfellow and then at Barry Park in the summertime. Joe graduated from Madison Central High School in 1934. Joe played for Zirkel's Grocery softball team. In 1939, he played for Wisconsin Foundry. Then he joined Security State Bank and they won the city championship and a State championship. Joe was a left-handed catcher and a leader of the team. In 1941, they won the State Championship, at least six city titles and major league pennants. Most of the time the Bankers have been looked upon by rival Major league clubs as the hated Yankees of the league; the outfit everybody tried to beat hardest of all, but always a tougher-than-nails clutch team that played its best when the blue chips were down. In 1974, Joe was named to Madison's all-time men's softball team. During World War II, Joe volunteered to serve in the Army and was stationed in India, where they won the Allied League's Calcutta Cup in 1945. Joe was a member of the 1786th Engineers Unit called "the Cobras." Joe married Ruth Erickson Toebaas in 1967. They enjoyed traveling, going to most states in the U.S. on one trip or another, a trip to Germany and Austria and a trip to Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. They have had season tickets to football games at Camp Randall since about 1967 and went to a couple of Rose Bowl games and other Bowl games. Joe was a member of the Madison Elk's Lodge 410 for many years and they enjoyed having dinner there. In 1981, Joe retired from the Wisconsin Dept. of Human Relations, Department of Unemployment Compensation. One gift to enjoy in his retirement was a membership in the Pen and Mike Club, later called Madison Sports Hall of Fame Club. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; four stepchildren, Dianna (Anton) Dammer of McLean, Va., James Toebaas of Sandpoint, Idaho, William Toebaas and Anita Toebaas of Madison; three step-grandchildren, Robin, Christen and John Dammer; three nieces, Margaret (Marc) Tanenberg of Northbrook, Ill., Debbie (Pierce) McNally of Wayzata, Minn., and Diane Zack of Ocala, Fla.; and brother-in-law, Helmut Zack of Ocala, Fla. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; and his two sisters, Bessie (Sidney) Perlstadt and Celia (Helmut) Zack, both of Chicago. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14, 2005, at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, with Pastor George Bauman officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Elks Club, Alzheimer's Association or the charity of your choice. The family wants to thank the wonderful staff of St. Mary's Care Center for the loving care they gave Joe for the last 11 months, and for their many kindnesses. We will always remember Joe's fellow residents of "Monona Road" at the Care Center who have become like family to us. Joe will always be remembered by those who knew him as a gentleman a gentle man, and for his wonderful smile, which never left him. God Bless and Shalom, Joe. Obituary: Alice O'Neill Dean - Class of 1924

MADISON/ PEORIA, ARIZ. - Alice O'Neill Dean, age 99, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005, in Peoria, Ariz. She was born and raised on East Wilson Street, Madison, on Aug. 5, 1906, to Michael O'Neill and Margaret Foy O'Neill. She attended Madison High and graduated from the University of Wisconsin, ready to teach French to high school students. The admiring love of her life, Joseph Charles Dean, convinced her to marry and follow him to Philadelphia, Pa., where he finished medical training. She later admitted it was a smart turn. Alice and Joe moved back to Madison as Dr. Joe joined his father, Dr. Joseph Dean, as a surgeon at the Dean Clinic. Her children grew with love, direction and the added benefit of her dynamic personality, beauty, hard work and humor. Alice could shovel snow, mow lawns, garden, drive a car like a NASCAR racer, cook, sew, hug, dance, laugh, play bridge, golf, tell stories and be there for friends and family when needed. She raised their four rascals alone while Dr. Joe was saving and repairing sailors and marines in the Pacific. The love of her life left her Dec. 24, 1959, but before he died, she promised him to continue to be her positive, giving, forward-looking self. She succeeded: married and buried Ralph Immell, Rollie Barnum and spent many years with Charles McGinnis before his death, all interesting and wonderful gentlemen. Alice had been a longtime member of the Red Cross, the Attic Angel Association, Maple Bluff Country Club and the Sun City Country Club, Ariz., and a resident of Freedom Plaza in Peoria, Ariz. Alice is survived by her three sons, Joseph C. (Marian) Dean, Michael (Peggy) Dean and Timothy (Peggy) Dean; daughter, Diana Dean; 13 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and three humorous siblings, Ed O'Neill, Frank O'Neill and June (Sister Clarita) O'Neill. A family memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Not many people live and experience such a long and wonderful life, with devoted family and friends. She played golf and bridge, was an imaginative cook and delightful hostess until just recently. We are thankful to have shared in her remarkable life. We will always love her and cherish her memory.

Obituary: Margaret A. Lalor - Class of 1930

TOWN OF DUNN - Margaret A. Lalor, age 94, a retired Madison teacher and local political activist who was a lifelong resident of the Town of Dunn, died on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center. She had suffered a stroke Monday. Miss Lalor taught first grade in the Madison public schools for 43 years starting in 1934. She spent her entire teaching career in the same room at the same school, Room 107 at Lowell Elementary on the city's east side. She estimated that about 1350 children had been her students and she was particularly proud of having taught so many youngsters to read, considering that her greatest achievement. Even after mandatory retirement age forced her to give up teaching she continued to go back to the school for more than ten years to read to the children as a volunteer. She also returned to lead the school's annual Halloween Parade. Miss Lalor was born July 4, 1911, on her family's 160 acre farm between Madison and Oregon, the youngest of the four children of James H. and Anna Keeley Lalor. Her grandfather, an Irish immigrant, staked his claim on the land in 1847, after noticing a productive spring. As a girl, Miss Lalor went to the rural Swan Creek School until it closed, finishing grade school in Oregon. After graduating from Madison Central High and Milwaukee State Teacher's College, she began her job at Lowell School. Later in her career she became active in the Madison Teachers Inc., serving on the union's negotiating committee and speaking out forcefully on key issues that led to the 1976 strike against the school district. After retirement she volunteered with Meals on Wheels, the Oregon Council on Aging and became extremely active in local politics in the Town of Dunn. Cal DeWitt, a University of Wisconsin professor who was then town chairman, appointed her as one of the original members of the town's Planning Commission. She continued to serve until moving to the Attic Angel Place Health Care Center in 2002. She attended countless meetings, often sparring heatedly with real estate developers and their attorneys. Once at a legislative hearing in the State Capitol, she spoke out from the gallery, taking a prominent lobbyist to task for his testimony about a proposed landfill. She exclaimed "How can you say those things when you know you are wrong? That's not the way I taught you in the first grade, and I'm ashamed of you." In preparing to deal with encroaching real estate development pressure, the town first declared a two-year moratorium while it drafted a development plan designed to keep growth orderly, gradual and controlled. The plan won public acceptance and has since become a model for communities throughout the country. Most recently the town established a conservation easement program in cooperation with the Dane County Natural Heritage Foundation, and Miss Lalor was among the first participants, selling development rights to her property while retaining ownership of the land. Miss Lalor's three siblings preceded her in death, George Lalor in 1970, Phil Lalor in 1978, and Lucille Lalor Curran in 1989. Her survivors are her nephew, Timothy Lalor Curran (Kathy) of Overland Park, Kan.; three great-nephews, Dan Curran (Lisa) of Wauwatosa, Nick Curran of Washington, D.C., and Brendan Curran (Casey) of Shawnee, Kan.; a great great- nephew, Frank Curran of Shawnee, Kan.; a great great- niece, Allison Curran of Wauwatosa; and her first cousins and dear friends, Ellen Green and Kathleen Harty, both of Fitchburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at HOLY MOTHER OF CONSOLATION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 651 N. Main St., Oregon with Father Bill Connell presiding. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Oregon. Visitation will be held on Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the church. Obituary: Virginia (Snell) Schuh

MADISON - Virginia L. Schuh, age 64, passed away on Monday, June 20, 2005. Devotion is a word which is tossed around casually by many people. To Virginia "Gin" Schuh, devotion was not just a word, but a life choice that she took seriously. Gin's life came full circle. She was devoted to her family, friends, work and life passions, which encompassed her life. The first chapter of Gins life began on Nov. 3, 1940. She grew up on the south side of Madison, where she graduated from Central High School. It was there that Gin learned the devotion of family and also the love of dance (especially the jitterbug), books, movies, theater and cooking The second chapter of Gin's life surpassed any novel that she read. She had the opportunity to travel and explore the world. This was the chapter where the devotion of her family began to take root. Gin had four children, Linda, Tammy, Denise and Michael. In turn she was blessed with nine grandchildren, Amber, John, Jessica, Matthew, Dakota, Josh, Anna, Tristan and Simon. It didnt stop because "Grandma," as all of her grandkids knew her, was blessed with two great-grandchildren, Kaden and Isaiah; and a son-in-law, Tim. Throughout her life, Gin showed her devotion being committed to her family, friends, church, many community organizations and the elderly. She was a strong, loving, and selfless person who continually gave of herself to others; including her work with Amvets and her employment at the Willows Nursing Home. Virginia will be joining her mom and dad, Irene and Maurice; and her brother Robert. She leaves behind sisters, Helen, Delcie, and Mary Lou; and brothers, Mike and Mark. If an epilogue were to be written for her life, however, it would read how Gin's devotion surpassed her death, as she will continue to be a source of love and support to her family, friends, and all the people whose lives she has touched. You can join Gin's family and friends in celebrating the memory of her life at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 24, 2005, at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. A private family burial will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery. Cress Funeral & Cremation Service 3610 Speedway Road (608) 238-3434

Obituary: Don Trachte - Class of 1933

MANCHESTER, VT. - Don Trachte, age 89, a long time resident of Sandgate, Vermont, died at the Equinox Terrace in Manchester on May 4, 2005. Don was born in Madison on May 21, 1915, the son of the late Arthur Fredrick and Meta Trachte. Mr. Trachte graduated from Madison's Central High School, attended the University of Wisconsin and later served in World War II as a lieutenant in the Army. In his formative years in Madison, Trachte's interest in art and drawing led him to collaborate with the late Carl Anderson, the creator of the cartoon strip "Henry." The first cartoon was submitted to the "Saturday Evening Post" in March of 1932, and quickly skyrocketed "Henry" to fame. Soon after, the cartoon strip was sought out by William Randolph Hearst for syndication and grew to appear in 400 newspapers in 40 countries. While drawing, he spent countless hours traveling for the USO in Europe, Alaska, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and the Philippines, where he entertained troops. In 1950, Trachte moved his family to Arlington, Vt., in part because he knew the late Norman Rockwell, a man he greatly admired, lived there. Arlington provided a comfortable surrounding with famous artists who inspired him to paint as well as continue his cartoon work. He established a close relationship with Rockwell and posed for him several times. The most recognized "Post" cover, Trachte was the principal in "Outside the Principal's Office." Trachte was active with other local painters and became a committee member of the Southern Vermont Art Center. The peaceful Arlington area helped nurture Trachte's diverse interest in amateur theater, gardening, building stone walls, photography, repairing parlor organs and running his pet baby bulldozer. He is survived by four children, a daughter, Marjorie Rosenberg of Locust Valley, N.Y., Donald Trachte, Jr. of Burlington, David Trachte of Sandgate and Jon Trachte of Houston, Texas; and a brother, David Trachte of Saint Joseph, Mo. A private memorial service is planned at a later date. To send the Trachte family email condolences, visit www.sheafuneralhomes.com. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Brewster Funeral Service in Manchester, Vt.

Obituary: Corinne Caire

PHOENIX, ARIZ./ MADISON - Corinne Louise Caire, age 64, passed away in Phoenix, Ariz., on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2005. She was born on Feb. 9, 1941, in Madison, to Edgar P. Caire and Mary B. (Thomas) Caire. Corinne attended Longfellow Elementary School and Central High School. Corinne was a voracious reader and loved to crochet. She was a spirited woman of many talents, loved by her family and friends, who remember her strong faith in God, kindness, generosity and unwavering optimism in the face of life's obstacles. Our family had lost touch with Corinne for more than five years, and had been reunited with her by mail in December 2004. The family learned the second week in February, that she had been diagnosed with liver cancer and had two months to live. Her sister, Gretchen, and niece, Amelia, traveled to Phoenix to help her return to Madison. Corinne chose to stay in her adopted home of Phoenix after learning of her illness. To those who knew her, this was an example of Corinne's courage and fighting spirit. On Friday, March 25, 2005, Corinne's sisters spoke with her by telephone from Madison and Maple Grove, Minn. They sang, "What A Friend We Have In Jesus," and "A Little Ducky Duddle," a song that Corinne had learned while attending nursery school at the Neighborhood House Cottage when it was located on Mound Street. Cynthia Margaron, the Director of Social Services at the Desert Terrace Care Center, held Corinne and the telephone while the sisters spoke. Cynthia said that a look of peace and a smile spread across Corinne's face as her sisters told her how much they loved her, and sang to her. That was the last time the four sisters spoke together. She is survived by her son, Michael S. "Kaleem;" his wife, Lisa Peyton-Caire; and four grandchildren, Jabari, Sekani, Amira and Alana Caire. Ms. Caire is also survived by her mother, Mary B. Caire; and sisters, Dolores (Maurice Sr.) Gavin of Maple Grove, Minn., Marie "Patsy" Thomas and Gretchen Caire of Madison. Her other survivors are nephews and nieces, Maurice II (Tamara) Gavin of Rogers, Minn., Aaron (Paula) Gavin of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Howard (Mary Belinda) Muhammad of Madison, Amelia Gavin of Seattle, Wash., Colin (Kristine) of Broadview, Ill., Carmon Caire of Madison, and Kenneth (Diane) Thomas of Madison; 14 grand-nephews and grand-nieces; and her dear friends, Marie Kunz, Beulah Alms and Michael Giancola of Phoenix, Ariz., who so lovingly cared for her before, and during her illness. Her father, Edgar P. Caire, preceded Corinne in death. The family thanks Corinne's church, First Assembly Church, on Cave Creek Road, in Phoenix, Ariz., for aiding Corinne in her Christian walk. The family also wants to thank the staff at the Desert Terrace Care Center, Hospice of the Valley, all in Phoenix, and for the tender care they gave Corinne. Their patience and kindness to the family as they called everyday for information on Corinne's condition will never be forgotten. There will be a private service for the family. Life will be perfect for heaven's place We'll see God, the Father and Son, face-to-face. For God will be there, Everywhere that you are; And Jesus will shine like a bright morning star. Heaven is wonderful, Don't you agree? It's simply the best place We ever could be! - Kathleen Long Bostrom
