Obituary: Jean M. (Poore) Shoemaker - Class of 1943

MADISON - Jean M. (Poore) Shoemaker died peacefully on Feb. 24, 2015, surrounded by her children. Jean was born on Jan. 13, 1926, in Otter Creek, Wis., to Elijah and Ruth (Rich) Poore. Jean graduated from Madison Central High School in 1943, and attended nursing school for a semester, which she left to travel to Seattle, Wash., to marry Bill Shoemaker on April 8, 1944. Jean was a true working mother, employed by Eagle Foods as a cashier and head cashier. In her sixties she attended courses in computer literacy and went to work at WPS before her retirement from Great Lakes Higher Education. She was a member of First United Methodist Church for more than 70 years, where she was a dedicated volunteer and made many longtime friendships. She enjoyed traveling, playing golf in her later years, and her game group. Preceding Jean in death was her husband of 68 years, William; parents; and siblings, Mary Alice, Elaine, Sybil and Ed. She is survived by five children, Linda (Bob) Sands, Cindy (Greg) Hinz, Laura (Steve) Meixner, Ruth (Pat) Baier and Dan (Lisa) Shoemaker. Jean was proud grandmother to Pamela (Mike) Capozziello, Debi Sands (Steven Schwenke), Kristin (Scott) Mayer, Ryan Hinz (Austin Bell), Lindsay (Eric) Schmidt, Will (Sara) Meixner, Jeanine (Ben) LaRue, Lauren, Liza and Tess Baier, Spencer Nolden and John and Brooke Shoemaker. She is further survived by great-grandchildren, Ella, Colton, Kadin, Kellin and Gage; and her brother, Dick Poore. Jean's family would like to thank the dedicated staff of Agrace HospiceCare for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Agrace HospiceCare Inc. Obituary: Clara A. "Clare" Di Loreto - Class of 1943

MADISON - Clara A. "Clare" Di Loreto, a lifelong resident of Madison, passed away at home on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014, two days after her 89th birthday. She was born Chiara Di Loreto on Nov. 27, 1925, the youngest of five children. Her parents, Consiglio Di Loreto and Antonietta Campitelli Di Loreto, had emigrated to Madison from the Abruzzo region of Italy in the first decade of the 20th century. Clare was immensely proud of her heritage. Clare never married but was a big sister or second mother to her many nieces and nephews. She is survived, most immediately, by her loving caretaker and niece, Mary Tortorice; her great-nephew, Brian Tortorice; and her great-great-niece, Savannah Tortorice; along with many other nieces and nephews and their families whom mourn her death and will miss her vibrant personality, her naughty sense of humor, her wonderful stories, and the great interest she took in her family. Clare was preceded in death by her parents; and four siblings, Assunta (Sue) Saccomando of Chicago, Maria Regina (Mary) Tortorice of Madison, Stefano (Steve) Di Loreto of Menasha, and Donato (Dan) of Madison. Clare was what was called, in her day, a career girl. She graduated from Madison Central High School in 1943, received training as a secretary, and spent the next 45 years in that profession. She joined CUNA Mutual Insurance on May 1, 1948, transferring from CUNA Credit Union when her friends at CUNA Mutual told her the parties were better. Clare retired from the organization on May 1, 1988, proud of her 40 years of service to the day. Clare lived a full life, traveling widely in the United States and abroad. She was an excellent league bowler and a fiercely competitive card player. She and a number of her single friends formed a social club called the "Unclaimed Treasures" and had great fun together for many years. Family, friends, her Catholic faith, Chinese food, and pasta were Clare's great passions and enthusiasms. Even in her old age she could polish off a big plate of spaghetti, preferably with red sauce and homemade meatballs or sausage. She became an excellent cook in her retirement; earlier in life she was too busy to spend time in the kitchen. Clare was a member of St. Joseph Parish and (later) of St. Dennis Parish, where she was a member of the Altar Society and a lector at Sunday Masses. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at noon, on Friday, Dec. 5, 2014, with Father Randy Timmerman presiding. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. Memorials may be made to St. Dennis Catholic Church.

Obituary: Dorothy M (Pertzborn) Jafferis - Class of 1943

MIDDLETON - Dorothy M. (Pertzborn) Jafferis died on April 23, 2014, at Agrace HospiceCare, following a long illness. She was born at home on July 17, 1925, to Adolph M. and Hedwig (Koch) Pertzborn. Dorothy attended St. James Grade School and Madison Central High School, graduating in 1943. It was while at Madison Central High School that she met her husband and life partner, Tom. They were married on May 17, 1947, at St. James Church. Upon high school graduation, Dorothy was employed for five years at the old Industrial Commission (Unemployment and Workman's Compensation Department). After the birth of her first child, she was a stay-at-home mother until her last child started school. During that time she worked at home, typing many theses for UW students. Dorothy re-entered the workforce, working for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union for 20 years. After retirement from the union, she worked in the office of then Gov. Anthony Earl. Her last employment was at American Girl. A life-long democrat and staunch union advocate, she volunteered for many democratic political candidates at all levels of government. Dorothy also served the City of Madison on the Human Services Board for nine years, Madison Youth Commission for two years, Personnel Board for four years and Hope Haven for two years. Being very active in the labor movement, she served both as vice president and president of the Office Employees Union. She was a board member and secretary of the Labor Temple Association, a delegate to Madison Federation of Labor (South Central Federation) and the Committee on Political Education Steering Committee. Dorothy was an avid UW Badgers fan. She and her family traveled to many Badgers away and Bowl games. Dorothy and Tom were Badgers ticket holders for 50 years. Baking, bingo, crossword puzzles and visiting with her grandchildren were her favorite past times. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Margaret and Esther; grandson, Patrick Costello; two brothers-in-law, John Caruso and Jim Waters; a niece, Susan Wilcox; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Dorothy's generous spirit, devotion to her family, and her work ethic were inspirational to all those whose lives she touched. In addition to her husband, Tom, she is survived by her five children, Christine/Tina (David) Lund, Kathy (Kevin) Costello, JoAnne (Bob) Bradley, John (Kim) Jafferis, and Bob (Marsha) Jafferis; sisters, Rachel Caruso, Alice (Jim) Wilcox, Cathy Waters, and Barbara (Bill) Bougher; grandchildren, Mandy (Erik) Monson, David J. Lund, Chris Larson, Jenni (Chad) Anderson, Justin (fiancé, Lindsey) Jafferis, Jeremy Jafferis, Max Costello, and Antonia "Annie" Costello; great-grandchildren, Michael and Ella Monson, Alexis Jafferis, and Sylvia Anderson; step-grandchildren, Jennifer Tredinnick and Erik Bradley; step-great-grandchildren, Savana Halverson and Grace and Riley Bradley; in addition to many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Obituary: John A. Lehmann - Class of 1943

MADISON - John A. Lehmann, age 87, of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at St. Mary's Care Center. He was born on Sept. 20, 1924, in Mather, the son of Alfred and Edna (Hoover) Lehmann. John came to Madison in 1937, and was a graduate of Central High School. He served during World War II, in the U.S. Merchant Marines from 1943 until 1947. John married Florence Viviani on Aug. 20, 1949, in Madison. He was a power plant engineer for the State of Wisconsin for 38 years, retiring in 1986. John was a member of the Wisconsin Association of Power Plant Engineers, Knights of Columbus, and St. Bernards Catholic Church. He enjoyed playing euchre, spending time with family, dancing, reading, and camping. John is survived by daughters, Nancy (Felix) Kowalewsky, Sue (Paul) Lehmann-Ziebarth, and Karen Lehmann, all of Madison; sons, Tim (Maggie) Lehmann of Madison, and Jeffrey (Sandee) Lehmann of Oregon; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence; his parents; and brother, Fred. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2450 Atwood Avenue, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 20, 2012, with Monsignor Michael Hippee presiding. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery. Obituary: M LaVonne (Prescott) Schiro - Class of 1943

MADISON - M. LaVonne Schiro, age 85, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 9, 2010, surrounded by her family.

LaVonne was born February 11, 1925, in Deerfield. She grew up in Madison, graduated from Central High School in 1943, and attended the University of Wisconsin, studying English and art. She married George Schiro in 1945, and raised three children, Mark, Jay and Monty. She spent her life as a devoted mother raising her three sons. She actively participated in many school, civic and volunteer activities.

She was an outstanding cook and seamstress, who enjoyed arts, crafts and sharing those gifts with her children and grandchildren. She worked at Randall State Bank and later became a licensed real estate agent. LaVonne was blessed with a giving nature that always put others before her; she was small in size but big in heart.

She is survived by her many nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, too numerous to mention, as well as a great-grandchild, a brother and a sister.

Her request was to not have a funeral but rather to have a simple celebration of her life. With that in mind we invite you to gather at Tex Tubb's Cadillac Ranch from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, October 14, 2010, 2701 University Avenue, Lake Point Commons, Madison.

She possessed a fine sense of humor and sharp wit, which she exercised right up until the end. Of all of her accomplishments she was most proud of two of her three "boys." She will be missed deeply.

Obituary: Clarence Joseph Esser - Class of 1943

ORLANDO, FLA.- Clarence Joseph Esser, age 84, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2009. He was born in Madison, May 13, 1925, to Lawrence and Paulina (Michels) Esser. After graduating from Central High School in Madison in 1943, he attended the University of Wisconsin where he excelled as an outstanding tackle on the football field. He was the most valuable player in 1944 and 1945, and captain in 1946. He played professional football for the 1947 Chicago Cardinals. They won the NFL Championship that year beating the Philadelphia Eagles (28 - 21). Andrea Adelson wrote an article in the Orlando Sentinel, prior to the 2009 Super Bowl, about Clarence and his football history. After football he was a salesman and manager, primarily in the field of insurance. He moved his family from Wisconsin to Jacksonville, Fla., in 1948. He lived in the Orlando area since 1975. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Esser Neet (Fred) of Minneapolis, Minn.; his stepdaughters, Ruth Becker (Ed), Cindi Post (George), Kay Franklin, Ronna Clayton and their mother Anita Esser all of Tampa, Fla.; brothers, Arnold Esser (Sally) of Kenosha, Norbert Esser (Sue) of Greenville, S.C., and Vincent Esser (Lillian) of Danville, Calif.; sister, Laverna Schittone of Oak Creek; sister-in-law, Joyce Anderson of Madison; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Raymond and Lawrence. The family wishes to thank his favorite neighbors, the Smith Family: Darla, Bob, Derek and Summer, who were always there for him. Roxie and Ernie will miss him too. Obituary: Ruth E. (Rasmussen) Helleckson - Class of 1943

MADISON - Ruth E. Helleckson, age 83, passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, after a short battle with larynx cancer, at Sebring Assisted Living. She was born on Nov. 14, 1925, in Madison, the daughter of Henry and Fern (Ostrander) Rasmussen. Ruth graduated from Madison Central High School in 1943 and was a member of their a cappella choir. She married Dwain Helleckson on June 25, 1944. Ruth and Dwain co-owned Helleckson's Liquor and Helleckson's Service Station for many years. She was a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church for more than 50 years. Ruth is survived by three children, Linda (Thomas) Junck, Cindy (Robert) Schumacher and Rick (Deborah) Helleckson; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Gordon Rasmussen; sister, Eileen (Phil) Falkenborg; sisters-in-law, Ruby Hubbard and Katie Helleckson; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwain; her parents; and a granddaughter, Cami Lynn Junck. Obituary: Jean (Edie) Topp - Class of 1943

MADISON - Jean Topp, age 82, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, thus ending her journey through Alzheimer's disease. She was born on Sept. 17, 1925, in Chicago, Ill., to James and Ethel (Morris) Edie. Jean graduated from Madison Central High School in 1943. She dearly loved her classmates and attended as many of their wonderful reunions as she could. After graduation, she was proud of her first job at the Neckerman Agency, as a secretary. Jean was united in marriage to Robert W. Topp on May 29, 1948, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Madison. They started their family in Middleton, then moved back to Madison on Segoe Road. They shared 40 years together until the time of Bob's death in 1988. She was employed for 20 years by Hill Electric and truly enjoyed decorating the large front windows that faced Park Street. She received many nice letters from people who would drive by and enjoy the holiday decorations, and the tributes to the Hill and Topp family celebrations. Jean loved the University of Wisconsin Marching Band. The music would touch her heart and she was as proud of the band members as if they were her own children. She loved to spend time in her flower gardens. Jean was a very active woman who had many interests and hobbies. She was and avid golfer, and early member of Nakoma Golf Club and through the years, she would join her friends at Hill Farms and the Madison Municipal Ladies League. She also was involved in the Elks Lodge, Ladies Auxiliary, and the Queen of Peace Ladies Auxiliary. She very much enjoyed playing bridge, SkipBo, and putting together puzzles. She also enjoyed the bowling leagues at Schwoegler's and Badger Bowl. Jean and Bob traveled the world with their many friends and she continued to travel with her friends after Bob's death. Jean loved to entertain people at her home and to plan parties for others. She had the best "Life begins at 60" party ever when she retired from Hill Electric. Jean had the gift of laughter and the gift of empathy. She did much to help others. Jean volunteered at the Red Cross and through the years for her children's school functions. She participated in Alzheimer's disease research studies, knowing that even if a cure was not found for her, maybe her participation will help find the cure for others. Jean was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She unselfishly dedicated her life to others, and always welcomed family, guests and visitors into her home. Her door was always open, even while Alzheimer's disease was slowly forcing it closed. Jean is survived by her children, Keith (Kathy) Topp of Oregon, Wis. and Sharon Topp of Madison; her sister, Ruth (Keith) Hawks of Wausau; cousins, June Hammersley of Madison and Gordon (Joyce) Morris of Edgerton; and sister-in-law, Marge Libby of Madison. Jean had the greatest grandchildren, Tom Topp and Kevin (Jenny) Topp of Oregon, Lori (Jesse) Ewoldt of Dane, and Jen Clukas of Madison. Jean also had the most beautiful great-grandchildren, Carson and Emma Topp, and Stella Jean Ewoldt. Jean was blessed with many nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly and it was clear that they loved her; Gery (Bonnie) Hammersley, Wendy Miller, Kim Bray (Brittney and Tiffany), Linda Bridwell (Jeffrey, Joey, Steven), Mark (Shelly) Hawks, David (Patty) Morris, and Bruce (Vicki) Morris. She is also survived by many, many truly wonderful friends who continued to keep her in their thoughts and prayers throughout her journey. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, 2008, at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison. Obituary: Donald J. Diederich - Class of 1943

MADISON - Donald J. Diederich, age 82 died on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born on July 16, 1925 in Madison, the son of Isadore and Gertrude (Bischel) Diederich. Don graduated from Madison Central High School in 1943. He enlisted in the Navy and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander and served in Japan. After World War II, Don was discharged and joined the reserves. He continued to be with the Naval Reserves, amounting to 31 years of service. At the same time he graduated from the University of Notre Dame and then from the University of Michigan with an M.B.A. He began work in Milwaukee with Wisconsin Bell Telephone, and there he met his future wife. They were married on Oct. 28, 1950 in Milwaukee. He also worked for Continental Can Co. and then later for the Wehr Steel Company. Don had always wanted to return to Madison, so they moved back in 1963 where he continued his career at Graber, USAFI and the VA Hospital. Don enjoyed golfing, fishing and traveling with the whole family. Holidays with family and friends were cherished by Don and he always remained in touch with his Navy roots. He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church since 1988, life member of the Reserve Officers Association, M.O.A. and Madison Elks Club. He was a lifelong blood donor with the Red Cross. Survivors include, his wife, the former, Jeanette Ruehle of Madison; one daughter, Linda (Jim) Sebree of Cross Plains; one son, William Diederich of Madison; two granddaughters, Erica (special friend, Tony Megna) of Ft. Wayne Ind. and Lisa (special friend, Nick Williams) of Milwaukee; a sister, Mary Suchomel of Burlington; one brother, William (Gloria) Diederich of Santa Ana, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Donna Diederich of Utah; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles; and a brother-in-law, Al Suchomel. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 405 S. Owen Drive, Madison, on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007, at 12:30 p.m. Msgr. Ken Fiedler will officiate. Friends and relatives may call after 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday until the time of services. Obituary: Naomi (Bambrough) Voigts - Class of 1943

MADISON - Naomi A. Voigts, age 80, of Madison, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 24, 2005, at home. She was born on May 31, 1925, in Lancaster, to Frank and Josephine (Bradley) Bambrough. Naomi graduated from Madison Central High School in 1943. She worked for the Madison Public Library for 28 years as supervisor of materials preparation. Naomi was also active with the Madison Coalition of Aging for 15 years. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church for more than 45 years. Naomi is survived by three daughters, Karla Herron of Madison, Susie (Steve) Krebs of Lakeville, Minn. and Kristi Smith of Warrenville, Ill.; a son, Paul (Judy) Voigts of Madison; grandchildren, Rusty Herron, Briar Herron, Angel Krebs, Bethany Krebs and Laura (Emmett) Black; and great-grandchildren, Briar and Kaleb Herron. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton; her parents; a brother, Clarence "Bud" Hooks; and sisters, Ruby Hartnett and Harriet Gorman. Memorial services will be held at MESSIAH EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5202 Cottage Grove Road, Madison, at noon on Monday, Nov. 28, 2005. Burial will be at a later date. MADISON - Dorothy M. Slotten, age 79, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at St. Marys Care Center, Madison. Dorothy was born on Dec. 2, 1925, in Madison, the daughter of Frank and Gertrude (Hank) Engel. She was raised by her grandmother, Sophie Hank. Dorothy graduated from Central High School in 1943. On June 7, 1947, Dorothy and Sylvester "Stub" Slotten were married. Dorothy worked for the state of Wisconsin for more than 38 years. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. Dorothy is survived by her husband, Sylvester "Stub;" two brothers-in-law, Eugene (Marie) Slotten and Grant Slotten; two sisters-in-law, Dolores (Lowell) Hanson and Kay Elding; several nieces and nephews; and by a special friend, Margaret Courtney. She was preceded in death by her parents; her grandparents; her brothers, Robert and James Elding; and a brother-in-law, Orvin (Shirley) Slotten. Obituary: Julian Murray Kahl - Class of 1943

WAUNAKEE - Julian Murray Kahl, age 79, died on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center surrounded by his family. He was born on April 29, 1925, in Waukesha, to William and Erna (Scheele) Kahl. Julian graduated from Madison Central High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 until 1946, in the Pacific Theater. Julian married Dorothea Birkeland on Oct. 28, 1950, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. He retired from Oscar Mayer in January 1985, after 35 years. Julian also worked as a custodian for Peterbilt for approximately 10 years. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Julian enjoyed bowling, Saturday night euchre and his pets. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their ball games. Julian is survived by his wife, Dorothea of Waunakee; three children, William (Diane) Kahl of Cottage Grove, Julie (James) Kuhlow of Waterloo, and Pam (Ray) Phillips of Cottage Grove; grandchildren, David, Matt (Beth Kreger), Ryan and Jeff Schroud, Jamie Kuhlow, and Cory, Kevin and Kyle Phillips; a sister, Myrna Kahl; and his constant canine companion, Patches. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Arthur Kahl. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, with the Rev. Bernt Tweit presiding. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Obituary: Iona Mae (Wheelock) Swetmore Weitzel - Class of 1943

WAUNAKEE - Iona Mae Wheelock Swetmore Weitzel, age 79, died peacefully on Thursday, July 22, 2004, surrounded by family, at her home in Waunakee. She was born on Monday, May 4, 1925, at Madison General Hospital in Madison, to Hazel M. (Bewick) and Harvey E. Wheelock. She was married to Benjamin Swetmore in the mid 1940s, and later to Raymond Weitzel in 1955, both preceding her in death; circa 1980s and 1991, respectively. Mrs. Weitzel is survived by her seven wonderful children and their spouses, whom she all adored, Mrs. Judith R. (Anthony R.) Newfield of W. Hartford, Conn., Mrs. Christine M. (Steven F. - deceased) Trotter of Exeter, Mo., Mr. John A. Weitzel of DeForest, Mr. James R. Weitzel and his wife, Judy of Waunakee, Mr. Raymond W. Weitzel and his wife, Judy of Marshall, Mrs. Debra J. (Charles J.) Washa of Black Earth, and Mrs. Roxana R. (Darrell D.) Calkins of St. James, Minn. Surviving her also are her 13 precious grandchildren, Janice, age 37, Felicity, age 35, Derek, age 34, Damian, age 32, Cosmas, age 27, Liza, age 27, Jason, age 24, Joshua, age 24, Titus, age 23, Louise, age 21, Katie, age 18, Angelina, age 13, and Colton, age 9; and lastly, her youngest living legacy, four great-grandchildren, Connor, age 9, Taylor, age 7, Elizabeth, age 6, and infant boy, Kain, and a December 2004 expected great-grandson. In addition, Mrs. Weitzel leaves three of her four cherished sisters, Mrs. Alice (Elmer) Thaden of Lodi, Mrs. Clara (Spence) Erickson of Pardeeville, and Mrs. Ruth Norwood of Colorado Springs, Colo., and predeceased by her younger sister, Mrs. Joyce Thompson of Madison. A shy, naturally gifted academician, Mrs. Weitzel began her education at the spectacularly architectural Lincoln Elementary School on Gorham Street in Madison. Growing happily through childhood with good grades, playing jacks, marbles, hopscotch, jumping rope and roller skating with her sisters; she was marred only at age 9, by the early death of her dear father. Graduating from Madison Central High School in 1943, impacted, along with all young people, by the affects of World War II, Mrs. Weitzel landed her first of many jobs; working at Montgomery Wards, where she met her first husband. She soon advanced to managing the personnel and payroll department at the Gisholt Machine Co. on East Washington Avenue in Madison. Eventually switching gears, in 1956, she took her city-girl self and with her second husband and four children in tow, enthusiastically embarked on the new adventure of farming in Baraboo. Acclaimed for her abundant canning and freezing vegetable garden, adding two more children to her family; one of whom was almost born on a haying tractor. Taking accordion lessons and sewing up a storm, Mrs. Weitzel unknowingly redefined multi-tasking; honing her many talents alongside her gently-voiced common sense and ever present, fair humor. Moving her clan in 1961, to the even more challenging Reynolds Farm in Waunakee, she was a quietly competitive groundbreaker for the woman's movement and easily re-entered the managerial workforce at Strauss Printing in Madison. In 1962, she gave birth to her last beautiful baby girl. Her professional career was cut short when, at age 66, she was struck and thrown through the air by a moving vehicle, operated by a physician, as Mrs. Weitzel was walking to her office at Davis Duehr on Regent Street in Madison. Surviving this, she went on 13 more years, visiting, living with and caring for whomever of her seven children needed her. These children wishing to express how much they all love her and that she will be in their hearts forever. Also, they fondly recount her love of music, reading, dancing, bowling, cribbage, solitaire, avid crossword puzzling, her enjoyment of fish fries with friends and family, and in her later years, the treasured companionship of her dog, Sho-Mi. As per Mrs. Weitzel's last wishes, her memorial services will be privately held by close friends and family, remembering her radiant smile, her reassuring voice, her constant courage, her comforting hugs and kisses, and always imaging the good in everyone. Her ashes will be dispersed amongst her children and she requested that any condolences be sent to her children of the donor's choice.

Obituary: Mary "Mena" (Clementi) Gassen - Class of 1943

MADISON - Mary "Mema" Gassen, age 78, passed away, surrounded by her loving family, on Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, after a short, courageous battle with cancer. Mary was born in Madison on Sept. 11, 1924, the daughter of John and Frances Clementi. She graduated from Central High School. She was married to Gilbert Gassen from November 1951 to November 1967. Mary was a very active throughout her entire life and was still employed up to the time of her cancer diagnosis in October 2002. Mary started her career with Oscar Mayer and after retiring worked at Bob White Candy Company, Bavaria Sausage Kitchen, and for the past 12 years she has worked at Cub Foods West. Mary provided foster care in her home during the early years of her marriage. During her lifetime she was involved in many sports activities and received many awards for baseball and bowling. Mary loved her job at Cub Foods and the many friends she had as co-workers and customers. She also enjoyed Sunday football games, bingo every Thursday, and trips to Ho-Chunk. Mary's greatest source of joy and happiness came from her family; her daughter, granddaughter, great-granddaughter, and the family schnauzer, Maxx. She was so proud of them. Mary is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Wes) Coppersmith; a granddaughter, Angie (Dewaine) McFadin; her most precious great-granddaughter, Kaylee McFadin; two sisters; a brother; and relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant grandson, Christopher; three sisters; and two brothers. A three-hour memorial visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with the memorial service beginning at 7 p.m., on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at FITCH LAWRENCE SANFILLIPPO CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 6021 University Ave., (608) 238-8406, with Chaplain Pamela Moering presiding. Obituary: Patricia Pat (Doyle) Bauhs - Class of 1943

MADISON [Wisconsin] - Patricia Pat Bauhs, age 76, died on Friday, April 26, 2002, at Meriter Hospital. Born Patricia Ann Doyle in Chicago, Ill., on Dec. 29, 1925, Patricia was a longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Parish, and was more recently a member of St. Maria Goretti Parish. Pat graduated from Central High School in 1943, where she made lifelong friends. She married her soul mate Richard S. Bauhs on Oct. 30, 1948, at St. Raphael Cathedral and devoted her life to caring for her family. She is survived by her loving husband, Richard S. Bauhs; 10 children, Mary Pat (Michael) Feifarek, Teresa (Robert) Zimmerman, Julie Bauhs, Caryl (Jason Rollette) Bauhs, Richard J. (Betty) Bauhs, Jane Bauhs, John L. (Louise) Bauhs, William (Jeanne Kuchenbecker) Bauhs, Greg Bauhs, and Nancy (David) Kuhlman. She is blessed with 11 grandchildren, Matthew and Ben Feifarek, Charles and Luke Zimmerman, Maggie and Lucy Rorge, Richard and Brian Bauhs, Katie Stoughton, and Anna and Kayla Bauhs. Pat is also survived by two sisters, Mary (Ken) Urso and Jean (Ted) Maglio; sisters and brothers-in-law, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Patricia was preceded in death by her parents. Leo Pat and Nina Doyle; her husbands parents, John and Caroline Bauhs; her brother, James Doyle; her brother-in-law, Edward Ned Fauerbach; and her dear aunt, Ervilla North.
