Obituary: Genevieve (Lalley) Faust

MADISON - Genevieve "Gen/Sis" Faust, age 92, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Sienna Crest, Marshall. She was born on Nov. 29, 1911, in Madison, the daughter of John and Anna Lalley. She attended Central High School, and was a longtime member of St. Patrick and St. Raphael Church. Gen belonged to the Eagles Club and was an avid bowler, bingo and card player for many years. She retired from Wisconsin Life Insurance Company and Wisconsin Telephone Company. Genevieve is survived by three children, daughter, Judith (Ted) Sobek, Marshall, and sons, Robert (Beverly) Faust, Madison, and Richard (Jean) McSherry, Shiocton. She will be dearly missed by 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Ginny Thielke of Madison; and many nieces, nephews, and special friends. Gen was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Daniel and Irvin Lalley; sister-in-laws, Betty and Grace Lalley; her brother-in-law, Albert Thielke; nephews, John Lalley and John Thielke, niece, Bonnie Lalley; and other family and friends. A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at 11 a.m. at ST. PATRICK'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 404 E. Main St., Madison, followed by leaving in procession for interment at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. until time of service on Monday at the church. Obituary: Iona Mae (Wheelock) Swetmore Weitzel - Class of 1943

WAUNAKEE - Iona Mae Wheelock Swetmore Weitzel, age 79, died peacefully on Thursday, July 22, 2004, surrounded by family, at her home in Waunakee. She was born on Monday, May 4, 1925, at Madison General Hospital in Madison, to Hazel M. (Bewick) and Harvey E. Wheelock. She was married to Benjamin Swetmore in the mid 1940s, and later to Raymond Weitzel in 1955, both preceding her in death; circa 1980s and 1991, respectively. Mrs. Weitzel is survived by her seven wonderful children and their spouses, whom she all adored, Mrs. Judith R. (Anthony R.) Newfield of W. Hartford, Conn., Mrs. Christine M. (Steven F. - deceased) Trotter of Exeter, Mo., Mr. John A. Weitzel of DeForest, Mr. James R. Weitzel and his wife, Judy of Waunakee, Mr. Raymond W. Weitzel and his wife, Judy of Marshall, Mrs. Debra J. (Charles J.) Washa of Black Earth, and Mrs. Roxana R. (Darrell D.) Calkins of St. James, Minn. Surviving her also are her 13 precious grandchildren, Janice, age 37, Felicity, age 35, Derek, age 34, Damian, age 32, Cosmas, age 27, Liza, age 27, Jason, age 24, Joshua, age 24, Titus, age 23, Louise, age 21, Katie, age 18, Angelina, age 13, and Colton, age 9; and lastly, her youngest living legacy, four great-grandchildren, Connor, age 9, Taylor, age 7, Elizabeth, age 6, and infant boy, Kain, and a December 2004 expected great-grandson. In addition, Mrs. Weitzel leaves three of her four cherished sisters, Mrs. Alice (Elmer) Thaden of Lodi, Mrs. Clara (Spence) Erickson of Pardeeville, and Mrs. Ruth Norwood of Colorado Springs, Colo., and predeceased by her younger sister, Mrs. Joyce Thompson of Madison. A shy, naturally gifted academician, Mrs. Weitzel began her education at the spectacularly architectural Lincoln Elementary School on Gorham Street in Madison. Growing happily through childhood with good grades, playing jacks, marbles, hopscotch, jumping rope and roller skating with her sisters; she was marred only at age 9, by the early death of her dear father. Graduating from Madison Central High School in 1943, impacted, along with all young people, by the affects of World War II, Mrs. Weitzel landed her first of many jobs; working at Montgomery Wards, where she met her first husband. She soon advanced to managing the personnel and payroll department at the Gisholt Machine Co. on East Washington Avenue in Madison. Eventually switching gears, in 1956, she took her city-girl self and with her second husband and four children in tow, enthusiastically embarked on the new adventure of farming in Baraboo. Acclaimed for her abundant canning and freezing vegetable garden, adding two more children to her family; one of whom was almost born on a haying tractor. Taking accordion lessons and sewing up a storm, Mrs. Weitzel unknowingly redefined multi-tasking; honing her many talents alongside her gently-voiced common sense and ever present, fair humor. Moving her clan in 1961, to the even more challenging Reynolds Farm in Waunakee, she was a quietly competitive groundbreaker for the woman's movement and easily re-entered the managerial workforce at Strauss Printing in Madison. In 1962, she gave birth to her last beautiful baby girl. Her professional career was cut short when, at age 66, she was struck and thrown through the air by a moving vehicle, operated by a physician, as Mrs. Weitzel was walking to her office at Davis Duehr on Regent Street in Madison. Surviving this, she went on 13 more years, visiting, living with and caring for whomever of her seven children needed her. These children wishing to express how much they all love her and that she will be in their hearts forever. Also, they fondly recount her love of music, reading, dancing, bowling, cribbage, solitaire, avid crossword puzzling, her enjoyment of fish fries with friends and family, and in her later years, the treasured companionship of her dog, Sho-Mi. As per Mrs. Weitzel's last wishes, her memorial services will be privately held by close friends and family, remembering her radiant smile, her reassuring voice, her constant courage, her comforting hugs and kisses, and always imaging the good in everyone. Her ashes will be dispersed amongst her children and she requested that any condolences be sent to her children of the donor's choice.

Obituary: Robert Conrad Roisum - Class of 1950

PARDEEVILLE/ MADISON - Colonel Robert "Bob" Conrad Roisum, U.S. Army Reserve, retired, age 71, of Marshfield, Mo., and formerly of the Pardeeville area, died on Sunday, May 9, 2004, at his home. He was born in Madison on Nov. 12, 1932, to Herman and Blanche (Harvey) Roisum. He graduated from Central High School in Madison, in 1950. On Oct. 7, 1954, Bob married Audrey Wendlandt in Pecatonica, Ill. They lived in the Portage area for several years and Bob was a full time employee of the U.S. Army Reserve, assigned to the 44th General Hospital, in Madison. He obtained the rank of Colonel and was assigned to the 30th Hospital Center in Chicago when declining health forced his retirement. It was at that time he and Audrey moved to Missouri. His leadership led to the 44th General Hospital being considered one of the finest hospital units in the country. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Marshfield, Mo. Bob is survived by his wife, Audrey of Marshfield, Mo.; a daughter, Debra (Ron) Thompson of Portage; three sons, Dave (Jane) Rosium of Neenah, Dale Roisum and special friend, Renee of Pardeeville, and Daniel Rosium of Marshfield, Mo.; six grandchildren, Amanda (Chad) Steinle, Becky and Tanya Thompson, and Zach and Angie and Heather Roisum; a great-grandson, Hayden Steinle; a brother, Donald of Menomonie; a sister, Lorraine (Bob) Hover of La Mirada, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Ardis Roisum of Keene, N.H., and Ruth Roisum of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; other relatives; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wayne Roisum and Bryant Roisum; and two sisters, Connie Roisum and Connie Maxwell. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2004, at ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH in Portage, with Pastor John Mackowiak officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Portage with military rites by Portage Area Veterans. Friends may call at the church after 10 a.m. on Saturday. Obituary: Sally (Kinsella) Seils - Class of 1947

MADISON - Sally Seils left this world on Wednesday, July 21, 2004, surrounded by her family and her Irish music. She was born in Madison to Agnes and Joseph Kinsella on Nov. 12, 1929. She graduated from Central High School in 1947, and married Burton Seils in 1951. She went on to receive her medical assistant's degree and worked for Dr. Wheeler until the birth of her children. She cherished her time with her family and friends, and her annual trips to Texas and Florida to see family. She was not able to go to Ireland, but the love of Irish humor, music and stories were so much a part of her, and she shared these gifts with all who were privileged to know "Our Gal Sal." She was one of a kind, and we are all better for being a part of her life. She is survived by her three children, Lisa Holpin, Andrew (Krista) Seils and Daniel Seils; her sister, Mary (Edward) Hommel; nieces, Kathleen (Robert) Schnee, Stacy (Scott) Criley and Karrie Benjamin; nephews, Jeffrey (Shelly) Hommel and Kevin (Linda) Kinsella; and her beloved eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Agnes and Joseph; her brothers, Paul J. Kinsella and Robert Kinsella; grandmother, "Dede;" and Grandpa Val. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. WAUKESHA - Richard K. Eberline Jr. went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at age 57. Dick retired after 25 years as a senior project engineer with Rockwell Automation. He is lovingly survived by his wife and soul mate of 31 years, Bonnie Joy (nee Repyak); he also is the loving father and friend of Rebekah and Aaron Eberline; cherished son of Mynette and the late Richard Eberline; dear brother of the late Bonnie Jean Eberline, Judy (the Rev. Fenton) McDonald and the Rev. James (Cheryl) Eberline; dear son-in-law of Betty and the late Joseph Repyak; special brother-in-law of James (Connie) Repyak, Betty Jo (Ted) Lewis, Nancy Repyak, Jane (Chuck) King, David (Sue) Repyak and Carolyn (Dale) Moore; and he is also loved by other relatives and friends. Obituary: Frank Martinelli

MADISON - Frank J. Martinelli, age 81, of Madison, died on Sunday, June 27, 2004, in his home. Frank was born in Madison, on Sept. 30, 1922, to Pacifico Giovanni Giuseppe and Constancia "Elvira" (Ponti) Martinelli, emigrants from Issolaccia, Italy. Frank was a graduate of Madison Central High School. As a soldier in World War II in the 115th Infantry Regiment, he served in the European Theater and was awarded a purple heart and bronze star. He married Gladys Mary Schey on Oct. 26, 1946, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sun Prairie. Frank was a grocer for 37 years as owner of Marty's Mart for seven years in Deansville, and Martinelli Market for 30 years on Olin Avenue in Madison. A devoted father and husband, he loved people, the theater, dancing, golf, cards, food, and practical jokes. He was a member of Confraternity of Christian Doctrine for 55 years, the Italian Workmen's Club and the Knights of Columbus. His greatest joy was his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; a son, Michael; and his brother, Ernest. He is survived by six children, Linda (Harry) Brokish, Gail (Scott Spoolman) Martinelli, David (Tony Lueck) Martinelli, Philip (Sandra) Martinelli, Julie Martinelli and Daniel (Kate) Martinelli; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Peter, Christopher, Matthew, Gina, Will, Katie, Jason, Jennifer, Rachel, Dominic, Abby and Victor; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Michael (Lesley) Martinelli; two great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Bailey; and four sisters-in-law, Marion (Roland) Hunsader of Fort Atkinson, Mabel (Chester) Kuharski of Monona, Irene Schey of Brookfield, and Laura (Emden) Schey of Sun Prairie. Obituary: Florence Elizabeth (Anderson) Class - Class of 1933

MADISON - Florence Elizabeth Class, age 89, a lifelong Madison resident, passed away on Wednesday, June 23, 2004. She was born on Jan. 18, 1915, the only daughter of Adolph Carl and Eleanor Ann (Rinder) Anderson. She graduated from Central High School and Madison Business College after which she was employed in the office of Gisholt Machine Tool Company. Florence married Ronald P. Halvorsen in 1937. He was a popular grocer on Monroe Street, and they had four children before his untimely death in 1945. In 1956, Florence married George M. Class, an executive with Gisholt. They enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe, and one extended venture around the world. Their home was in Maple Bluff, and they were members of the Madison Club, the Maple Bluff Country Club and Christ Presbyterian Church. Her beloved George died in May 1988. Survivors include four children, Barbara J. Wiechers of Madison, John R. Halvorsen of Port Orange, Fla., Ronald G. Halvorsen of Racine and James P. (Mary) Halvorsen of High Point, N.C.; and two step-children, Marilyn M. (Gordon) Doss of Birmingham, Ala., and Virginia A. (Raymond) Johnston of Madison. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John L. Anderson; and two stepsons, John B. Class and George Michael Class Jr. A memorial service will be on Monday, June 28, 2004, at 11 a.m. at CHRIST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 944 E. Gorham St., Madison. Obituary: Robert W. "Bob" Arndt - Class of 1967

MADISON - Robert W. "Bob" Arndt, age 55, passed away at his home with his sons by his side on Tuesday, June 15, 2004. He was born on March 4, 1949, in Madison, the son of William and Darlene (Johnston) Arndt. For the last 25 years, Bob was a carpenter with the Madison Metropolitan School District. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing and snowmobiling, to name just a few of his pastimes. Most of all he enjoyed spending time around the kitchen table with his family and friends. He is survived by his two sons, Joseph (Melisa) Arndt of Rio, and David Arndt of Madison, their mother, Dawn (Jerry) Reiter of McFarland; and two precious granddaughters, Olivia and Lily Arndt of Rio. Obituary: Eleanor Louise Jones Smith - Class of 1928

MADISON - Eleanor Louise Smith, age 93, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at Meriter Health Care Center, Madison. Eleanor was born in Dodgeville on Feb. 5, 1911, to Lewis Elmer and Sarah (Owens) Jones. Eleanor grew up in Madison, and she graduated from Central High School and UW-Madison. In 1942, she married Edward J. Smith, who later served as a Dane County supervisor and chairman of the Dane County Board. They lived in Mount Horeb, where she taught civics, French and Latin at Mount Horeb High School for many years. Eleanor later served as hall advisor at Chadbourne and Barnard Halls and for the University of Wisconsin Summer Music Clinic until her retirement in 1976. Eleanor was a lifetime member of the Starlite Chapter, No. 283, of the Order of the Eastern Star, and was a past worthy high priestess and life member of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Madison Shrine No. 6. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and dining out. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed, in 1962; her father, in 1952; her mother, in 1978; and her brother, William Owens Jones, in 1992. Eleanor is survived by her sister-in-law, Colleen Jones of Madison; two nieces, Marianne (Neil) Fauerbach of Madison, and Nancy Jones of Beaver Dam; a nephew, Barry (Mary) Jones of Madison; and six great-nieces and great-nephews, Colleen and Erin Fauerbach, Eric and Andy Davis, and Hannah and Grace Jones. A visitation will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at LULLOFF-PETERSON-HOUCK FUNERAL HOME, Dodgeville. Following the visitation, there will be a procession to East Side Cemetery for a committal service at noon, where Pastor Jean Bartlett will officiate.

Obituary: Margarita "Peg" Olson Ash

MADISON - Margarita " Peg" Olson Ash, age 95, died on Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Meriter Hospital from pneumonia and lung complications. She was born in a house on Blair Street on Oct. 26, 1908, the daughter of Oscar C. and Anna M. Olson. Peg grew up in the Gorham Street neighborhood. She attended Lincoln School, Madison Central High School and the UW-Madison where she received her bachelor of arts degree in economics in 1927. Peg was a member of Delta Zeta sorority. She pursued a career in department store sales and management in the Madison, Detroit and Chicago areas. Peg married Philip Louis Ash on May 3, 1931, and together they had two children. During Peg's retail merchandising career she worked with Mandel Brothers, Boston Store, McNiel and Moore, Silverstones, she taught in Milwaukee and later became a successful real estate agent. Peg was a life member of Bethel Lutheran Church. She worked in a variety of community activities in Whitefish Bay, Shorewood, Detroit and Madison. Peg taught decoupage in Shorewood and Madison; she was also a docent for the governor's home in Madison. She is survived by her two children, Philip L. (Ann) Ash Jr., retired U.S. Army colonel, of San Diego, Calif., and Karen (Verne) Bartelt of Janesville; and four grandchildren, Michael P. and Catherine E. Ash of Madison, Beth (Don) Bartelt Oswald of Janesville, and Charles (Di) Bartelt of the Milwaukee area.
