Obituary: Edwin Hill, Jr. - Class of 1951

MADISON - Edwin Hill Jr. [age 82] passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at UW Hospital surrounded by his family. Born Jan 8, 1934, in Madison, he was the one and only son of Edwin and Charlyne (Daniels) Hill. Ed graduated from Central High School in 1951. For a short time, he ran a crane for a steel construction company. He started working at Anchor S & L in 1962. He became Vice President of Property Management and retired after 39 years. Ed was the second African-American to be a city alderman. He was a bus driver for the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corp for 27 years; member of the WPS Board of Directors for 37 years; Chairman of Dane Co. American Red Cross; served on Madison General Hospital Board of Directors; founding member of Group Health Cooperative; served on Dane County Coliseum Board; member of Capital City Lodge No. 2. He was a Badgers football, hockey and Packers fan. He enjoyed photography, playing Spider Solitaire and driving his red Corvette. He is survived by his wife Barbara; sons, Edwin III (Marchel) and James (Rhonda); daughters, Lisa (Jeffrey) Goldsby and Linda (Rich) Real; step-children, Kristi (Jay) Morgan, Kent (Lona) Sheeran and Kurtis (Lisa) Sheeran; grandchildren, Arianna (Terrial) Campbell, Amanda (fiancé Dwayne) and Jeffrey Goldsby; step-grandchildren, Brandi Sheeran, Taylor Morgan, Kaley Morgan, Tyler Sheeran, Emily Sheeran, Landon Sheeran, Kaiden Sheeran and Kaci Sheeran; great-grandchildren, Taryn, Alyse and Wesley Campbell, Jeffrey III and Noriah Goldsby; sisters, Beverley (Al), Colinthia, Freddie Mae, Evelyn (Joe), Bernetta (Johnny), Charlyne, Elaine and Diane (Tony); many nieces and nephews; and many friends and other relatives. He is preceded in death by his parents; two nieces and a nephew. A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 6, 2016, at BLACKHAWK CHURCH, 9620 Brader Way, Middleton, Wis. Visitation will be Sunday, June 5, 2016, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at CRESS CENTER, 6021 University Ave., Madison, Wis. with a Masonic Celebration at 5:30 p.m. A special thanks to the staff at the UW Intensive Care Unit for their wonderful care of Ed. Obituary: La Verne (Kelly( Ninedorf - Class of 1951

MADISON /ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - La Verne Ninedorf [age 82] was reunited with the love her life on May 16, 2015. She is survived by her five children, Deborah (Mark) Montavon, Sherrie (Brian) Ray, Jim (Karen) Ninedorf, Dave Ninedorf, and Kelly (Scott) Oliver; and six grandchildren, Mindy (Marcus) Kiehl, Anne Montavon, Tyler (Myesha) Ray, Aisha Ray, Jeff (Virginia) Ninedorf, and Austin Oliver; two great-grandchildren, Skyler and Tristan Ninedorf; and one brother, R. Michael (MaryAnn) Kelly. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Frank Ninedorf; and her parents, Raymond and Ann Kelly. Born on Jan. 27, 1933, and raised in Madison, she attended Central High School and graduated with the class of 1951. She married Frank "Sonny" Ninedorf in 1953, and they went directly to Roswell, N.M., where Sgt. Ninedorf was first stationed in the Air Force. For 17 years she followed Frank on his assignments to such places as: England, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and Nevada, only to be separated when Frank went to Thailand. They lived in Madison and then DeForest, where La Verne was a cook at Pumpkin Hollow Grade School. She loved the children and the children loved her and her good cooking. In 1990 they moved to Florida and later settled in St. Petersburg, where La Verne thrived. She loved the sun where she could swim, the club house where she could play cards and bingo and get her stacks of books from the library. She and Frank worked at the stadium when the Yankees had spring training. For many years they would spend their summers back in Madison with family and friends, until their health no longer allowed them to travel. La Verne was a loving and loyal wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. All those who knew her couldn't help but love her. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in St. Petersburg, Fla. She accredited her strong faith to keeping her going despite her many illnesses. Baseball was another passion she delighted in and when the Rays were winning, she was their biggest fan. We'll miss her dearly but are comforted in knowing she died the way she had always prayed she would, and she did not pass alone. A Mass of Christian Burial was on Friday, May 22, 2015, at HOLY FAMILY CATHOLIC CHURCH in St. Petersburg, Fla. A second memorial Mass will be held in Madison at a later date to be determined. Mom, we hope that now that you are reunited with dad, may you dance and run together and may your coupons never expire.

Obituary: Mary Rose Gallagher-Arnold - Class of 1951

STOUGHTON- Mary Rose Gallagher-Arnold, age 80, died peacefully on Thursday, February 20, 2014, at Serenity Homes in Stoughton. Mary Rose was born April 3, 1933 to Charles and Ruth (Richards) Gallagher in Atchison, KS. Her family relocated to Madison where she attended Madison Central High School and the University of Wisconsin- Madison, graduating Cum Laude with a degree in Medical Technology.

As a wonderful result of her marriage in 1956, she was blessed with four children: Don Arnold (Tamara Ehlert) of St. Louis, MO, Dave Arnold (Mary Beth Sweeney) of Madison, WI, Beth Arnold of Belfast, ME, and Sandy Arnold of Manitowish Waters, WI. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Bobby, Amanda, Jason, Alexandra, Nicholas and Nathan.

Mary Rose was a talented, warm, and generous person. She was a creative woman with a wonderful laugh and a strong sense of humor. Even with a diagnosis of schizophrenia as an adult she remained a devoted and caring mother and grandmother.

In lieu of flowers, the Arnold family requests donations be made to Dane County Mental Health or the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill. Both organizations provide valuable services to those suffering with mental illness and their families.

The Arnolds also wish to extend deep gratitude to the professionals of Care Wisconsin, Serenity Home in Stoughton and Agrace Hospice of Madison.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at BLESSED SACRAMENT CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2131 Rowley Avenue. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church on Saturday. May you rest in peace now, Mom/ Grandma.

Obituary: - Robert "Bob" Marble - Class of 1951

MONONA - Robert “Bob” Marble, age 79, passed away on Thursday, March 8, 2012, at his home.

He was born on Oct. 30, 1932, in Madison, the son of Ray and Edith (Beckett) Marble. Bob graduated from Central High School in 1951. He was a proud member of the Wisconsin National Guard from 1949 to 1957. On Thanksgiving Day in 1953, Bob married Helen Jorgensen. After 30 years of employment, Bob retired from Oscar Mayer in 1981. He then worked as a locksmith for Capital Lock and Security until he retired in 1994. In 1994, Bob and his brother, Gerry, started Blue Marble Enterprises, an endeavor they had long planned. Bob also enjoyed working with youth in the Explorer Scouts and 4H, singing, woodworking, and making candy. He was famous for his peanut brittle.

He is survived by his loving wife, Helen; daughter, Vicki (Bryan) Miller; sons, Daniel, Lionel (Betty) and Sam; six grandchildren, Heather, Sarah, Marcus, Zachary, Ronald and Henry; two great-grandchildren; brother, Gerald (Davilee); and sisters, NayDean Davidson and Nieta McConnell. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Genny Hackbart; and daughter-in-law, Judy Marble.

Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 5 p.m., on Wednesday, March 14, 2012. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 3 p.m. until the time of service on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Bob’s family.

Obituary: Albert L. Hall - Class of 1951

MADISON - Albert L. Hall, age 78, of Madison, passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, at his home.

He was born on March 14, 1933, in Madison, the son of Alan and Helen (Anderson) Hall. Albert graduated from Madison Central High School in 1951. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1952, serving during the Korean War, and was discharged in 1955. Albert married Beverly Schlimgen on Nov. 26, 1955. He attended Madison Business College for a year, then worked as a truck driver for many years, retiring at Foreway. Albert was a member of Teamsters Local No. 695, VFW Post No. 7591, American Legion Post No. 501, Korean War Veterans, and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed camping with the St. Dennis Campers, watching sports, and spending time with his family.

Albert is survived by his wife of 55 years, Beverly; seven children, Sharon (Michael) MacDonald, Brian Hall, Alan (Cindy) Hall, Susan Hansen, Marilyn (Ronald) Ary, Carolyn (John) Adametz, and Jacquelyn Johnson; grandchildren, Susan, James Jennifer (Jimmy), Troy, Stacy (Tim), Joseph, Anne and Caitlyn; a great-granddaughter, Taylor; step-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren; siblings, Violet (Carmen) Tortorici, Barbara "Pat" (Rod) Bailey, Sylvia (Dean) Argall, and Margaret "Peg" (Peter) Gennrich; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a nephew, Ronald "RJ'; and sister-in-law, Evelyn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, with Father Roger Nilles presiding. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the church from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011, and also from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.

Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice. A special thank you to all of the ladies at Heartland Hospice, Tara, Megan, Abby, Penny, Jenny and Colleen.

Obituary: William Michael Locke - Class of 1951

MADISON - William Michael "Grandpa Bill" Locke passed away on Monday, July 6, 2009, at University Hospital at the age of 76. Bill was born in Mount Horeb on Nov. 15, 1932, to Helen Sutter Locke and Ernest Locke. They moved to Madison when he was 7 years old where his father died when he was 9. His mother Helen was remarried to Joseph Poloni. She passed away when Bill was a senior in high school. Bill graduated from Central High School with the Class of 1951. He met and married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Sharon Aldrich. They were married on June 7, 1952, at St. Patrick's Church and celebrated 57 wonderful years together. Bill worked for Fauerbach Brewery, Bancroft Dairy for most of his life, Dane County Dairy, and the Dean Clinic. He had many wonderful memories of life as a milkman and made many lifelong friends among his co-workers and customers. Bill and Sharon raised five children and having been an only child, Bill enjoyed the wonderful, noisy, happiness, of a big family. He leaves behind, his loving wife, Sharon; a daughter, Lexy (Mark) Maas of Whiterwater; three sons, Michael (Bonnie) of Poynette, Gary (Nancy) of McFarland, and Tom (Angel) of Dallas, Texas; a daughter, Susan (Dartt) Thompson of Madison passed away in November 1994. He is survived by six grandsons, Ben (Anna), Jordan (Kristen) and Michael (Anna) Maas, Sam Locke, Chad Sloniker and Kristopher Simons; four granddaughters, Taylor and Caitlin Thompson, and Dakota and Kylie Sloniker; and three great-granddaughters, Gabriella Cadwallader, Kimberly Simons and Maggie Sue Maas. Bill was a truly happy man who taught his children to love and respect the outdoors and in particular fishing. He loved his family more than anything else and treasured every moment with them. He taught them to treasure the joys that each new day can bring and leaves behind a legacy of everlasting and total love. Services will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2009, at ST. Obituary: Don Waldorf - Class of 1951

MADISON - Don Waldorf, age 75, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 1, 2008, surrounded by his family. He was born on May 15, 1933, in Madison, the son of Robert and Elizabeth (Reinke) Waldorf. He graduated from Central High School in 1951. Don began working for the City of Madison Engineering Department, retiring as a general foreman in January of 1990. He also was a part time youth softball supervisor for Madison School Community Recreation. Don loved softball. He organized many youth softball teams. Don played until a knee injury stopped his playing days, and then began coaching each of his children's teams and adult men and women softball teams. Don also loved taking pictures and combined his love of sports with his love of photography. He often attended high school sporting events to take pictures of many players, giving each of the players a copy of their photo. Many people knew Don as the "candy" or the "tootsie roll man." He always carried candy in his shirt pocket. Don was very loved by his family, according to one of his grandchildren, "I love you times 102." He is survived by his wife, Susanne; daughters, Elizabeth (David) Mitchell and Vicki (Martin) Limmex; son, Gregg Waldorf; grandchildren, Amy, Adriane, Zachary, Stephanie, Alex and Isaac; two great-grandchildren, Maven and Brandon; brother, Sid (Kathy) Waldorf; and many nieces, nephews, and other family members. Don was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Patricia; and nephew, James. Obituary: John Robert Bieberstein - Class of 1951

MADISON - John Robert Bieberstein died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at the age of 74. John was born in Madison. He graduated from Central High School in Madison and St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. in 1956. He served 10 years in the Air Force as a T-33 and T-38 instructor pilot, check pilot, and standardization evaluation officer until 1965 when he became a pilot with Eastern Airlines. During his 25 years with Eastern, he flew the Convair 440, the Boeing 727, the L-1011, and his favorite, the DC-9, as Captain and check airman. He also served in the Alabama Air National Guard flying F-84's. Througout his life, John was a dedicated volunteer developing and coaching a neighborhood swim program and holding leadership positions in his community civic association. He and his wife, Mary, were also active in the school community serving as presidents for the PTA. John's devotion for working with young people was most evident through his work with the Camp Fire organization where he volunteered both locally and nationally for more than 30 years. John took great pride in his marriage to his wife Mary (Casterton) Bieberstein, celebrating 50 years together in Sept. 8, 2007. He is survived by his wife; their two daughters, Janet Hutchins of Lawrenceville, and Jaci Sharitz and her husband, T.J. Sharitz of Duluth; his sister, JoAnn Lange and her husband, Robert Lange of Madison; and his four grandchildren, Christopher Hutchins, Jennifer Hutchins, Rachel Sharitz and Daniel Sharitz; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, Adolf Joseph Bieberstein and Amine Ella (Tanner) Kalhagen of Madison; and his half brother, Hans Bieberstein, also of Madison. John was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro where he taught the Men's Sunday School class, was a member of the church choir and served on the Administrative Council. In addition, he and Mary enjoyed singing with the Reynolds Chorus of which they were charter members. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and dear friend. He was an inspiration to many throughout his life and will be greatly missed. The family received visitors at McCommons Funeral Home in Greensboro, Ga. Services celebrating John's life were held at The First United Methodist Church of Greensboro on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The First United Methodist Church of Greensboro, P.O. Box 216, Greensboro, GA 30642 for the South Campus choir room.

Mary is survived by her husband, Daniel Marx; two brothers, Jim and Paul Martinelli; five sisters-in-law, Lorraine, Florence, Pat and Wanda Martinelli and Winona (Kenneth) Glienke; two brothers-in-law, Fred Marx and William Marx; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; eight brothers, Felix, Joseph, John, Frank, Peter, Emil, Edward and Dan; and a sister, Wilma. Obituary: Charles L. "Chuck" Thompson - Class of 1951

MCFARLAND - Charles L. "Chuck" Thompson, age 75, passed away on Monday, Nov. 19, 2007, at Serenity House, DeForest, after a 14 year battle with Alzheimer's. He was born on Nov. 16, 1932, in Madison, the son of Luther and Josephine (Caruso) Thompson. Chuck grew up in "The Bush". His love in life centered around his family and the sport of gymnastics. Chuck went to Central High School and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he competed in gymnastics. He served in the U.S. Army. Chuck enjoyed his profession as an iron worker for 50 years and during that time he served as president of Iron Workers Local 383 for 22 years. He was a member of Madison Turners, participated in volleyball and gymnastics, and helped to teach many young people the value of the sports he loved. He and his wife, Ruth enjoyed traveling, gardening and had many good friends. Chuck is survived by his wife of 46 years, Ruth; four children, Charles Thompson, Mark Thompson, Cathy Thompson and Amie Thompson; seven grandchildren, Alex and Nicholas Thompson, Chrissianna, Wilbert and Lieisha Davis and Brett and Scott Kelley; and sisters, Joanne Brandel and Patty McGuire. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Jim Thompson. A Memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., at 4 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007. Obituary: Charles Leroy Butler, Sr. - Class of 1951

NEEDLES, CALIF. - Charles Leroy Butler Sr., age 74, passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2007, in Needles, Calif. He was born Dec. 20, 1932, in Madison and graduated from Central High School. He lived in Needles, since 1968. Charles was a proud U.S. Marine. After his honorable discharge, he began his 50 year career as an ironworker. When he retired from that profession, Mr. Butler taught welding at Needles High School for seven years. Charles was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby Madigan; and his daughter, Jaclyn Butler. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Chomie; his children, Roxanne (Ralph) Meraz, Chuck Jr. (Debbie), Julie (Matt) Pollard, Jon and Paul (Crystal); 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Mike (Donna) Brown of Queen Creek, Ariz. and Norman (Anne) Brown of Madison; brothers-in-law, Joe (Dora) Quiroz and Ted (Betty) Quiroz; sisters-in-law, Virgie (Pete) Pagan and Ventura Quiroz; and several nieces and nephews. A military funeral was held at St. Ann's Catholic Church on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007. Arrangements were handled by Needles Dimond and Sons Mortuary.

Obituary: Raymond Henry Disch - Class of 1951

MADISON - Raymond Henry Disch, age 74, passed away on Sunday, March 11, 2007, at his home. He was born on Feb. 28, 1933, in Madison, to Henry and Ingeborg (Fladen) Disch. Raymond graduated from Madison Central High School in 1951. He lettered in five sports and was All City in basketball and volleyball. Raymond was a quarterback on the football team, second baseman on the baseball team and was also on the track team. He worked at Oscar Mayer part time, while attending high school and then full time later. Raymond married Dolores Trotalli. She preceded him in death in 1968. He married Jacqueline (Hickman) Recob on Feb. 8, 1972. Raymond became a firefighter on Aug. 1, 1958, and worked for the Madison Fire Department for 35 years, retiring on Feb. 1, 1993, as an assistant chief. He worked at Fire Stations No. 1, 2, 3, and 4, and also the administrative building during his career. Raymond served as a lieutenant, fire inspector, fire training officer, captain, district manager, and deputy chief, before retiring as an assistant chief. He was a member of St. Dennis Catholic Church, Madison Turners and a former member of Madison Elks. Raymond volunteered at St. Dennis Festival and was on the church athletic committee. He managed St. Dennis Grade School basketball, football, softball and CYO high school basketball. Raymond played in various city leagues in softball, baseball, volleyball and touch football. He managed the WTSO fast pitch softball team. Raymond was a UW men's basketball ticket holder for 35 years and a die hard Cubs fan for 60 years. He also enjoyed his annual fishing trips to the Chippewa flowage with his fishing buddies. Raymond was involved with the Senior Olympics after retirement, and played volleyball and ping pong with them. He also volunteered with St. Pauls Pantry on State St. Raymond is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Disch of Madison; nine children, Pamela (Gary) Herdrich, Mark (Michelle) Disch, Robert (Julie) Disch, Robert (Tracy) Recob, Susan Disch, Scott (Amy) Recob, Lisa (Scott) Johnson, Jennifer (Brian) Wiegand and Debra (Kenneth) Wills; 21 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2007, with Father Brian Wilk presiding. Obituary - John R. "Jack" Hammond - Class of 1951

MADISON - John R. "Jack" Hammond, age 71, died on Friday, Aug. 6, 2004. He was born on June 18, 1933, in Madison, to Regina (Braun) and Howard Hammond. Jack graduated from Madison Central High School. He served in the U.S. Navy between 1952 and 1956, and was a veteran of the Korean War. Jack married Barb Maloney on May 4, 1957, at St. Raphael's Cathedral in Madison. He was an arborist for the city of Madison for 38 years. Jack was a life member of V.F.W. Post No. 1318, and South Side Men and Women's Club. He is survived by his wife, Barb of Madison; two daughters, Regina (Jeff) Mauel of Brooklyn, and Laura Hammond of Stoughton; a granddaughter, Jessica Hammond of Madison; a brother, Jerome (Ali) Hammond of Madison; a sister, Jean Foster of Downers Grove, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jim; and a sister, Patty Cierpiot. A memorial visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 9, 2004. Memorials may be made to HospiceCare Inc. Obituary: Michael A. "Pee Wee" Caruso - Class of 1951

FITCHBURG [Wisconsin] - Michael A. "Pee Wee" Caruso, age 69, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2002, at St. Marys Hospital. Michael was born in Madison on June 17, 1933, to Jim and Caroline (Messina) Caruso. He was raised in the "Bush" where he worked in his parents White Front Grocery Store. He was a member of the 1948 junior touch football league city championship team and graduated from Madison Central High School in 1951, where he was a standout athlete and an all-city baseball player. In 1952, Michael was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Quartermaster Companies, 43rd Infantry Division, in Augsburg, Germany. Upon his return to Madison from Germany, Michael worked various jobs and assisted his parents at the grocery store. He finally accepted a position with the Madison School District at LaFollette High School, where he worked until his retirement. He was an avid golfer, loved jazz music and was an accomplished saxophone player. He will be deeply missed and is lovingly survived by his son, Vincent (Nancy) Caruso; a daughter, Maria (Tim) Cooper; a brother, Al (Carrie) Caruso of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Annette "Toots" Caruso; his former wife, Francesca; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Carly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2002, at ST. JAMES CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1128 St. James Court. The Rev. Douglas Dushack will officiate. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday at the church. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations in Michael's name may be made to St. James Catholic School. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to all the doctors, nurses, clergy and other caregivers at Dean Clinic, St. Marys Hospital, Sylvan Crossing and Oak Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their love, support, comfort, prayers and excellent professional care of Michael.
