Obituary: Donald E. "Don" Beale - Class of 1955

MADISON  - Donald E. "Don" Beale, age 75, passed away on Thursday, May 17, 2012, at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg. He was born on Jan. 30, 1937, in Madison, the son of Erwin and Romana (Dietrich) Beale. Don graduated from Central High School in 1955, where he excelled in athletics. He was named all-city in baseball, basketball and football. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957 in South Korea. Don married Yvonne Pedracine on Aug. 16, 1958. He received a Police Science Degree from MATC. He served on the University of Wisconsin Police Department from 1960 to 1991, retiring as a detective with the department. Upon retiring, Don worked part-time at the U.S. Federal Courthouse as a security guard and enjoyed mentoring youth in The First Tee golf program. He spent a lifetime enjoying sports, especially golf since his retirement. He was a loving dad, husband, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be deeply missed by family and friends. He was always optimistic and always there for his family. Don is survived by his wife, Yvonne; four sons, Greg (Nancy), Gary (Denise Davenport), Kevin (Cory) and Alan (Kelley Harbort); five grandsons, Nick (Brianna), Justin, Jordan, Mike and Shane; nine step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, Kyle Wrend, Jesse Hauser, Jayme and Jenee Davenport, Destiny, Jaymeson, Ashton, Gavin and Jesse; two sisters, Lola Cator and Virginia (Joe) Meitner; and brother Tom (Deane). He was preceded in death by his parents, Erwin and Romana Beale; sister, Mona Wallace; and brothers-in-law, Robert Wallace, LaVerne Cator and James Lumina. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 25, 2012, at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2450 Atwood Ave., Madison, at 12 noon. A visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of mass. Obituary: Robert A. Gruber - Class of 1955

MADISON [Wisconsin] - Robert A. Gruber, age 74, of Madison passed away on Monday, April 18, 2011. He was born on Jan. 25, 1937, the son of Richard and Dorothy (Rowe) Gruber. He married Sharon Herschleb on Dec. 28, 1961. Bob graduated from Madison Central High School in 1955. He served in the U.S. Army. Bob was a 32nd Mason, and a member of Masonic Lodges Commonwealth #325 and Daylight #362. He was a member of the Zor Shrine, Starlight Chapter #283 OES, and a life member of Scottish Rite. Bob was also a member of the VFW #1318 and the Luther Memorial Church where he taught Sunday school and served on many committees. He received honors from the three Masonic youth groups (Legion of Honor for DeMolay, Member of Honor of Job's Daughters, and the Grand Cross for Rainbow for Girls). Bob was a Wisconsin PGA official, and loved spending time on the golf course. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, and was a lifelong Badgers fan. Bob is survived by his wife, Sharon; four children, Bob Jr. (Cindy), Tom (friend, Debbie Benicek), Kris (Doug) Engbring, and Kevin; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Betty Lee Gloe. Funeral services will be held at LUTHER MEMORIAL CHURCH, 1021 University Avenue, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 25, 2011, with the Rev. Brad Pohlman presiding. Burial will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park with a Masonic service at the gravesite at 2 p.m. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Monday. Obituary: William W. "Bill" O'Connell - Class of 1955

MOUNT HOREB - William W. "Bill" O'Connell Jr., age 73, of Mount Horeb, died on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at HospiceCare, Inc. in Fitchburg, surrounded by his family. He was born on March 20, 1937, to William W. Sr. and Margaret (Meuer) O'Connell. He attended Catholic schools and graduated from Madison Central High School in 1955. He was a United States Marine veteran. He owned and operated many businesses, including one with his son, Bob. He then joined Century 21 as a realtor. He married Karen A. Dybvig on Sept. 18, 1993, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church by Father Donald Murray. Bill was a family man. Looking back, it especially seemed as if from the birth of his granddaughter, Tonya, she and Bill instantly became kindred spirits. That relationship matured over the years to become unique and special. They took many walks to her grade school playground, and Tonya showed a timeless devotion and compassionate, loving care to her grandpa. Tonya - please know that your acts of kindness brought great joy, love, and happiness to your Grandpa Bill. He was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Mount Horeb, and of the Knights of Columbus, where he was an officer. He was on the Mount Horeb Frolic Committee and was past president of the Village of Blue Mounds. He volunteered at the St. Martin's House in Madison. Survivors include his wife, Karen; his children, Bill (Mary) O'Connell of Waunakee, Deb (Jerry Buol) Darrow; his step-children, Denise (Steve) Webb of Middletown, Ohio, Derek (fiancé, Kristin) Kraemer of Stoughton, Dustin (Nicole) Kraemer of Mount Horeb; his grandchildren, Daniel (fiancé: Natalie) O'Connell, Tonya (Tom) Duerst, Shaun (Erin) O'Connell, Dalton O'Connell, Kelsey Darrow, Patrick O' Connell, Morgan Darrow, Caitin O'Connell; his step-grandchildren: Shelby, Rylee, and Sydnee Webb and Owen Kraemer,his great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Maya and Mayce Duerst, his mother-in-law: Elaine Parker of Mount Horeb, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Danny and Robert O'Connell; and his sister, Margaret O'Connell. Obituary: Dolores Jean Caire Gavin - Class of 1955

MAPLE GROVE, MINN./MADISON - Dolores Jean Caire Gavin age 71, of Maple Grove, Minn., and formerly of Madison, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at Maranatha Care Center, Brooklyn Park, after a valiant six year battle with breast cancer. She was born on Aug. 29, 1937, to Edgar Pierce and Mary Beulah Caire in Madison, where she lived until relocating to Maple Grove, Minn., in 2002. She was the eldest of the four "Caire Girls": Dolores, Corinne, Marie "Patsy" and Gretchen. She was a graduate of Central High School (Class of 1955) and Madison Business College (1957). She is survived by and was married, for 50 joyous years, to Maurice B. Gavin Sr. of Mobile, Alabama. From this union came four children, Maurice II (Tamara), Pastor Aaron Gavin (Paula), Amelia (Josh) and Colin (Kris); 13 beloved grandchildren; and her sisters, Marie (Patsy) Thomas and Gretchen Caire. She also leaves behind many extended loved ones from the Thomas, Lunnon, Gavin, Pierce, Karaway, McWatters, Padgett, Muhlfelder, and Briscoe families and Ghanaian children, Seth and Tina. She was committed to her prayer partners at Living Word Christian Center and credited the church's prayer groups with helping her "beat the odds" as long as she did. She was predeceased by her father, Edgar Pierce; her mother, Mary Beulah; and her sister, Corinne. A memorial service for family and friends will be held later this summer in Madison. Obituary: Ronald William Harrington - Class of 1955

MADISON - Ronald William Harrington, age 72, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, March 3, 2009. Ronald was born on June 15, 1936, in Madison, the son of John and Harriet Harrington. He graduated from Madison Central High School in 1955 and later married Mariea Guzzetta on May 31, 1958, in Madison. Ronald was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Madison. He collected stamps and baseball cards, and loved playing fast pitch softball. He also enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears. He especially loved spending time with his family and friends, and attending his grandchildren's events or school activities. Ronald worked for more than 37 years for the University of Wisconsin Physics Department prior to his retirement in 1993. He is survived by his wife, Mariea (Guzzetta) Harrington; three sons, Bill (Lisa) Harrington, Dan (Kelli) Harrington and Mark (Kathy) Harrington; seven grandchildren, Michael, Mariel, Zachary, Jackie, Samantha, Kaitlyn and Danny; six siblings, Regina (James) Emerson of Oshkosh, James (Lu Ann) Harrington of Beloit, Barbara (William) Miller of DeForest, Richard Harrington of Wautoma, Susan (James) Clifcorn of Madison, and Julie Washa (Gary Morgan) of North Freedom; his friends, Jack (Carol) Marshall and Sam (Bev) DiMaggio; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Obituary: Graham "Gray" Perrett - Class of 1955

MADISON - Graham "Gray" Perrett was freed on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, from the pain and suffering he's struggled with since having a stroke in November 2006. Gray was born on Oct. 12, 1937, in Devizes, Wiltshire, England. He came with his family to the Madison area after his oldest sister married a GI. Gray graduated from Central High School in 1955. He was a founding member of the Madison 56er Soccer Club and he retained a lifelong love of soccer. When health issues no longer allowed him to play the game he loved, Gray held many "jobs," such as games commissioner, referee commissioner, state board member, coach, etc. His last big soccer related event was watching nearly every televised match of the 2006 World Cup. Gray initially worked in the building trades but due to a back problem, he joined the automotive field, first as a salesman and finally, for the past 20 years, as the fleet manager for American Family Insurance. Gray loved nearly all sports, politics, world events and was a champion story teller, often embellishing the facts just enough to make it a really great tale! Gray is survived by his wife of nearly 25 years, Anita; children, Todd, Tammy (John) Koremenos and Tracy; stepchildren, Colleen (Kent) Humphrey, Valerie (Matt) Savarie and Betsy (Carl) Pyper; 10 grandchildren; sisters, Beryl McDermott, Eileen Gibbs, and "daddy's little girl," Patches. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeff; and a sister, June. Obituary: Daniel T. "Tim" Cotter - Class of 1955

WAUNAKEE - Daniel T. "Tim" Cotter, age 70, of Waunakee, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at the Waunakee Manor after a five-year battle with cutaneous t-cell lymphoma. He was born in Madison on Aug. 22, 1937, to Elmer and Helen (FitzGibbon) Cotter. Tim graduated with the Central High School class of 1955. He began working at Reynolds Transfer and Storage Co. as a truck driver where he worked for 42 years, retiring in 1996. Tim married Connie Ederer on Aug. 19, 1961, and they celebrated 46 years together. Tim's family and friends enjoyed his Irish wit and he especially enjoyed traveling to Ireland to meet his relatives in Dunmanway, County Cork. He is survived by his wife, Connie; his daughter, Ann (Dennis) Parker; his son, Daniel T. Jr. (Carrie) all of Waunakee; his four grandchildren, Ryan and Olivia Parker, and Emily and Daniel Cotter; a sister, Cynthia Cotter Arndt; two sisters-in-law, Valerie Gutberlet and Marian (Dwaine) Ohmen; and many loving nieces and nephews. MADISON - Wayne E. Leland passed away on Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center surrounded by his family. He was born in Madison on May 6, 1937, the son of Earl M. and Helen V. Leland. Wayne graduated from Madison Central High School in 1955. After two years in the Army he worked for the state highway department. Wayne was a member of the Middleton-Ionic Lodge No. 180. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and going to casinos. Wayne also cared deeply for all his great nieces and nephews. Obituary: Shirley A. (Wells) Gleichauf - Class of 1955

MONONA - Shirley A. Gleichauf, age 68, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center, after a courageous three and a half years battle with cancer. She was born on May 27, 1937, in Highland, to Lyborn and Greta Wells. Shirley graduated from Madison Central High School in 1955. She married Francis Gleichauf on Oct. 17, 1958. Shirley worked for the University of Wisconsin Extension for 35 years. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and St. Ann's Society. Shirley was a very special lady with many talents, sewing, quilting, and crafts. She loved her garden and flowers. Shirley was always positive and concentrated on helping others. She never complained. Shirley enjoyed the senior fun and fitness classes at Monona and McFarland. The true joy of her life was her children and grandchildren. Shirley was blessed with many loving and supportive friends and neighbors, too numerous to mention by name. She is survived by her children, Denise (Tim) Jackson of Sun Prairie, David of Monona, Debra (Bruce) Way of Stoughton, and Dan of Janesville; grandchildren, Anna and Jason Gleichauf, Rachel Jackson, and Brody and Brooke Way; a sister, Jackie Cairns of Monona; brother, Alan (Loral) Wells of Madison; many loving nieces and nephews; and a very dear friend, "adopted sister," Bonnie Sundal. Obituary: Joyce (Deering) Wall - Class of 1955

POYNETTE Joyce A. Wall, age 68, of Poynette, died on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005 at her home surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005 at the Portage Assembly of God, 2727 County Rd. CX, with Rev. Victor Hillestad officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Poynette. Friends may call on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005 from 1 p.m. until the time of service at 3 p.m. at the church. The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home of Poynette is assisting the family.

Joyce was born on Feb. 14, 1937 in Madison, the daughter of Fred and Minnie (Haskins) Deering. She graduated in 1955 from Central High School in Madison. Joyce married Theodore James Wall in 1957. She retired from the State of Wisconsin Department of Corrections in Madison. She was a member of the Portage Assembly of God Church. Joyce had a great love for her family, especially for her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Theodore James "Jim" Wall, Poynette; her children, Kevin (Jane) Wall, Arlington, Keith Wall, Pardeeville, Kimberly Ann (Dale) Howell, Madison, Kelly Jean Pierce, Pardeeville; 10 grandchildren, Joshua and Katie Wall, Shawndell, Christine and Isaiah Wall, Jasson and Sarah Howell, Megan, David and Bridget Pierce; three great-grandchildren, Marcus and Jasson Howell, Jr., Jonathan David Krynicki; also one great-grandchild expected in June; a very special friend Ruth Sadler; two very special pets, Muffin and Pumkin and is further survived by many other relatives and close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, a granddaughter, Melissa Ann, two grandsons, Nathaniel Luke Wall and Aaron Wall, and a sister, Joanne Deering.

Obituary: Jerry Dean Carter - Class of 1955

MADISON - Jerry Dean Carter, age 68, died of natural causes on Monday, May 9, 2005, at his home. He was born on May 4, 1937, the son of Erwin and Emma (Julson) Carter. Jerry was a lifetime Wisconsin resident and grew up in Madison. He graduated from Central High School in 1955, and earned a degree from Madison Business College. Jerry served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. He married the former Susan Ferris on July 28, 1962. Jerry was employed as an accountant for General Motors, Janesville, and then in sales at Thorstad Chevrolet, Madison, for 27 years. "Jer the Bear" was involved in many different activities during his lifetime including playing softball, coaching baseball, hockey and softball teams, golfing, a huge Badgers hockey and football fan, expert carpentry and woodworking, "dumpster diving" and loved to put on his famous garage sales. Jerry was very patriotic and was proud to serve his country. As a Civil War history buff, he was recently involved in the Gettysburg Preservation Trust. "The Bear" was a wonderful husband, proud father and grandfather "Papa." He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Susan; two children, Kristin (Dan) Carter Eschrich and Rick (Kelli) Carter, both of Chicago, Ill.; and four grandchildren, Connor, Regan, Kaitlyn and Cameron. He is further survived by many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Gwen (Jerry) Splinter, Sally (Glenn) Kisch, Mary (Ron) Ruble, Tom (LeAnne) Ferris, Aileen Ferris and Connie Ferris Bailey; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bill and Margaret Ferris; and brother-in-law, William H. Obituary: Jon M. Narum - Class of 1955

MADISON - Jon M. Narum, age 67, of Fitchburg, died on Tuesday, May 3, 2005. Jon was born on Sept. 24, 1937, to Lester L. and Ruth (Myer) Narum in Madison. He attended Central High School, and after graduating, he entered the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Norfolk, Va., and was aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Meredith. After leaving the Navy, he married and moved back to Wisconsin where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service. Several years later, he moved his wife and daughter back to Roanoke, Va., where he lived and worked as a plasterer until his retirement. He then moved back to Wisconsin. Jon is survived by four children, Peggy (Charles) Phillips, Brenda Powell, John Narum and Joey Narum; he had eight grandchildren, Craig, Jeremy and Aleasha Phillips, Jessica, Amy and Michael Narum, and Zachary and Rebecca Narum; and he had two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Dakota. Jon is also survived by a sister, Nancy (Bruce) Angeli; and a brother, Michael (Glendora) Narum. He will be sadly missed by nieces; a nephew; other relatives; and many friends. Obituary: Beverly Kay (Larson) Hook - Class of 1955

MADISON - Beverly Kay Hook, died on Thursday, April 7, 2005. She was born on November 21, 1936, to Laverne and Mathield (Gorder) Larson in Dodgeville. Beverly graduated from Central High School in 1955. In April 1956, she married Richard A. Hook whom she is survived by. She is further survived by two daughters, Kristi Hook-Brietzman and Karri (Dennis) Hook-Kelliher. Beverly is also survived by her grandchildren, Nicholas and Robyn Reed, Bradley Brietzman and Andrew Gadow. She was preceded in death by her parents, Laverne and Mathield (Gorder) Larson. Obituary: Maureen A. (Scoles) Lovejoy - Class of 1955

MADISON - Maureen A. Lovejoy, age 65, of Madison, died on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, in a Madison hospital surrounded by her family following a long battle with lung disease. She was born on Dec. 15, 1937, in Baraboo the daughter of Thomas and Esther (Hand) Scoles. She graduated from Central High School in 1955. She worked for American Family Insurance for more than 23 years until retirement in 2001. Maureen was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church. She enjoyed computers, especially surfing the 'net, and also enjoyed fall drives in the country and going out for dinner. She married Lee Lovejoy on Nov. 26, 1955, in Madison. In addition to her husband, Lee, she is survived by three children, Terri (Mac) Roberts of Madison, Linda (Robert) Boone of Madison, and Keith (Michele Welsh) Lovejoy of Mazomanie. She is also survived by two sisters, Marlene (Pete) Adams of Montello, and Theresa Searight of Beaver Dam; two brothers, Bill (Debbie) Parnel of California, and Robert Scoles of Madison; four grandchildren, Charles and Matthew Roberts, and Lorena and Cody Lovejoy; great-grandson, Jaylen Hayes; many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Obituary: Ronald H. "Count" Stormer - Class of 1955

MADISON - Ronald H. "Count" Stormer, age 66, died unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003. He was born on Feb. 25, 1937, in Madison, the son of Howard "Pete" and Frances (Frisch) Stormer. He graduated from Madison Central High School in 1955. Ron joined the Madison Police Department on March 19, 1962, and served the city until his retirement on June 22, 1989. Ron was an avid Packers and Badgers fan, he also enjoyed spending time with his wife, Judy at their Crystal Lake retreat where he was among many friends. He worked part-time at the Caribou Tavern for many years following his retirement and he loved to travel and especially enjoyed cruises. He is survived by his wife, Judene "Judy" of Madison; his children, Rebecca (Paul) Gilles of Battle Creek, Mich., Jane (Casey) McGann of Baraboo, John (Sandy) Stormer of Waunakee, Roberta (Bill) Briggs of Prairie du Sac, Daniel (Cindy) Stormer of Verona, Arthur (Debra) Davenport of Wisconsin Dells, and Richard (Richie) Duncan of Dallas, Texas; and by Ron's beloved cat, Misty. He is also survived by his mother, Frances Stormer of Fitchburg; his sisters, Darlene (Paul) Lavoie of California, Marilyn (Marlin) Irvine of Fitchburg, and Janice "Sue" (James) Lange of Phoenix, Ariz.; and 12 grandchildren, Daniel, Aaron, Kevin, Sarah, Amy, Mara, Sean, Corey, Bryant, Christine, Emily and Jacob; as well as many nieces, nephews, and close friends. Obituary: Pauline Ann (Johnson) Paulson - Class of 1955

MADISON - Pauline Ann Paulson, age 65, died on Monday, May 12, 2003. She was born on July 8, 1937, in Madison, the daughter of Arthur and Lucy Johnson. Pauline graduated from Central High School in 1955. She married Donald Paulson on Sept. 7, 1957, in Madison. Pauline devoted her life to taking care of her family. She was a member of St. Dennis Catholic Church, Madison Elks and Four Lakes Yacht Club. Pauline enjoyed crafts, golf and shopping, but most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren. Pauline will be deeply missed by her family and many friends, including her husband, Donald of Madison; three children, Richard (Denice) Paulson of LaCrosse, Sandra (Thomas) Bennett of Madison, and Cynthia (Richard) Rothwell of Madison; grandchildren, Jena and Ashley Paulson, Lyndsay and Briana Meisel, Chase and Lance Ott, and Jessica Bennett; a brother, Brad (JoAnn) Johnson; a sister, Frances (Howard) Helgeson; and her mother, Lucy Johnson. Obituary: Lee (Buck) Phillips - Class of 1955

FROMBERG, MONTANA - Lee Phillips of Fromberg lost her battle with cancer on the evening of June 2, 2002, surrounded by her family and friends, at her home in Fromberg.

Lee was born Sept. 4, 1937, one of six children to Ronald and Cecelia Buck. Lee graduated from Madison Central High School in Madison, Wis., in 1955; also in 1955, she married Robert Phillips. Lee received a degree in commercial art from the University of Madison.

Lee enjoyed many talents and had a passion for gardening and crossword puzzles. Lee moved to Fromberg in 1969, and worked various jobs, from the furniture factory in Bridger to tending bar at Miller's, Aldo's and the Little Cowboy in Fromberg. Lee always had a pot of coffee on and a conversation for anyone.

 Lee is survived by her sister Sally (John) McSherry of Ridgeway, Wis., Kay Jacobs of Key West, Fla., Janice (Phil) Lindemann, Madison; brother Daniel (Ruth) Buck of Madison; three sons, David (Sheryl) Phillips, Laurel, Robert A. Phillips, Billings, and Rodger E. Phillips, Fromberg; two daughters, Linda (Carl) Bridges, Casa Grande, Ariz., and Sheri (Tony) Spahr, Battle Creek Mich.; eight grandchildren, Jamie and Jodi Newsome, Casey Phillips, Andrew and Samuel Phillips, Anthony and Daniel Spahr, and Tucker Phillips.

 Lee was preceded in death by her parents; one sister Mary Lou Cooney; one daughter, Lisa Newsome; and one grandson, Daniel Robert Phillips. The life of Lee Phillips will be celebrated June 8, with a graveside service at one of Lee's favorite times of the day, 4 p.m., at Gebo Cemetery north of Fromberg. Cremation has already taken place. A reception will follow in the back yard of Lee's place in Fromberg.
