Obituary: Frederick J. Hall - Class of 1944

EDGERTON - Frederick J. Hall, age 86, passed away at the Edgerton Memorial Hospital on Friday, Feb. 15, 2013. He was born on June 21, 1926, in Madison, the son of John and Marie (Haack) Hall. [He was a 1944 graduate of Madison Central High School.] Fred was united in marriage with Beverly J. Weiser on May 18, 1991, at the Wisconsin State Capitol. He was employed with the City of Madison with the Madison Police Department, retiring as a Captain. Fred was a veteran of the Army Air Corp serving in World War II. Fred loved travelling and made many trips to Hawaii, Las Vegas, Florida and many other destinations. He enjoyed the theatre and was an avid fan of the Fireside Theatre and the Madison Civic Center. He rarely missed watching a Packers game, a Badgers football game or a Brewers game. Fred looked forward to Sunday family dinners and sharing stories about his life. He is survived by his wife, Beverly of Edgerton; his sisters, Genevieve Carlson, Lorraine Marvin, and sister-in-law, Gertrude Hall from Madison; his stepchildren, Craig DeVoy of Fort Atkinson and Shari Smith of Madison; his grandchildren, Craig, Julia and Devin; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Angeline; and brother, Bill. Honoring his wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. He was entombed at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Madison. Obituary: Richard L. Huff - Class of 1944

MADISON - Richard L. Huff passed away on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011.

He was born on May 6, 1927 in Madison, to Forrest Gibbs Huff and Lucille Beimborn Huff. An only child, he graduated from Central High School in 1944, received his B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin, graduating with honors in 1951. He was united in marriage to Harriet Willis on July 26, 1959, in Des Moines, Iowa. Dick taught school in Georgia until a friend suggested he learn television directing, which took him to WKOW-TV where he worked in the earliest days of television. In 1957, he was hired as a producer for television syndication business, which he purchased several years later.

Dick was active in various community organizations. In 1968, he served as one of the Wisconsin delegates to the Republican National Convention. He also served as volunteer chairman of the Dane County Children's Service Society and chairman of the UW Medical School Ophthalmology Advisory Board.

Dick was a gifted artist, and prolific writer. He loved music, books and acquired a great passion for painting. He published several poems, wrote several novels and wrote and co-produced a science fiction motion picture titled, "The Giant Spider Invasion". Along with his work in syndicated television, Dick wrote a book for the National Association of Realtors, published a marketing magazine and taught screen writing at the UW Extension. Dick was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Harriet; three children, Mary Lee "Molly" (James) Miller of Brookfield, William Gibbs (Sue) Huff of Minneapolis and Peter Bashford Huff of Sun Prairie; and seven grandchildren, Daniel James Miller, Sarah Emily Miller, John Willis Miller of Brookfield, Joseph Hunter Huff, Samuel Gibbs Huff of Minneapolis and Elizabeth Frances Huff and Anna Grace Huff of Sun Prairie.

As a child and teenager, Dick loved fishing with his father and uncles and later with his sons, in Boscobel and Prairie du Chien and the rivers there inspired a life-long love for the Wisconsin landscape. A private burial will be at the Huff family lot in Boscobel, where five generations of his family are buried.

A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monana Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011, with the Rev. John Swanson presiding. A luncheon will immediately follow the service. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday.

Obituary: Theresa A. (Gambino) Pfeiffer - Class of 1944

MADISON - Theresa A. (Gambino) Pfeiffer, age 85, of Madison, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, at St. Mary's Hospital, surrounded by loving family. She was born on Feb. 11, 1925, in Madison, to Peter and Madeline (Caruso) Gambino. Theresa graduated from Central High School in 1944. She worked as a bookkeeper at Madison Kipp and was proud to be a waitress at Josies for 50 years. Theresa married Ralph Pfeiffer on Sept. 28, 1946, and they were happily married for 64 years. Theresa always had a smile on her face, was always doing things for others, and was loved by many. She is survived by her husband, Ralph; son, Ralph Jr. (Renee); daughter, Annette (Ken); grandchildren, Max and Gina Pfeiffer; sisters, Mary Skaggs and Ann Cardin; sisters-in-law, Barbara (Sandy) Adams, Norma (John) Hanson, Esther Vergeront (Bill), Lauren (Jack) Pfeiffer and Marge Castillo; and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens. Obituary: Bernard K. "Barney Morgan - Class of 1944

BARABOO - Bernard K. "Barney" Morgan, age 84, son of Bernard Erich and Etta (Gage) Morgan, passed away peacefully on Oct. 14, 2010, at St. Clare Hospice House in Baraboo.

He was born on Sept. 5, 1926, in the Richland Center area, and was raised on Madison's south side. He attended Madison Central High School, and upon graduation in 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the USS Gage and USS Marathon in the South Pacific and participated in the invasion of Okinawa, during early April 1945. On July 22, 1945, he was aboard the USS Marathon when she was hit by a one-man suicide torpedo. After extensive repairs the USS Marathon was pressed into duty as a minesweeper. He volunteered to serve with the "Guinea Pig" minesweepers until his discharge in 1946, when he returned home to Madison.

He married the love of his life Dorothy Jean Van Wormer on Sept. 27, 1947, in Madison, and they made their home Portage, Madison and Monona Grove, before moving the family to Waterloo, in 1963. Barney worked two full-time jobs for 22 years. He worked days driving truck for LCL Trucking and nights for the Oscar Mayer Company. He worked for the Oscar Mayer Company for a total of 47 years. After retirement from Oscar Mayer, Barney and Dorothy moved to the Lake Delton area. With time on his hands and a desire to stay active Barney returned to work at the Lands' End Company in Reedsburg, where he worked for several years.

Barney enjoyed the outdoors. He enjoyed spending time in the fall helping friends, harvest cranberries and hunting ducks and deer in the Babcock area. However, Barney's favorite pastime was fitness. He was passionate about fitness before fitness was "fashionable." He coached little league baseball for more than a decade in the Waterloo area, and for as long as his family can remember he always had a gym in the basement. It was common for Barney to spend his first hour home from Oscars every day "lifting his weights."

Barney is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy of Baraboo; and his six daughters, Connie Morgan of Stoughton, Susan Morgan of Stoughton, Michelle (Joseph) Schwarz of Prairie du Sac, Melinda Morgan of Lake Delton, Jan (Butch) Galson of Sun Prairie, Jill Wholley of Fall River, Mass., and a son, Russ (Lori) Morgan of Gaston, Ore.; as well as 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard Erich and Etta; and his brothers, Robert, Donald and Ronald; and his sister, Valerie "Jean" Gugel.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010, at 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at which time the funeral services will begin. Services will be held at ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH in Baraboo. The Rev. Richard Collier will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Portage.

Obituary: Victor Frank Leake - Class of 1944

MADISON/MONONA/OREGON - Victor Frank Leake, age 83, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, at Stoughton Hospital, after a stroke with major complications.

He was born on Nov. 29, 1926, the son of Earl and Ida (Huebner) Leake. Victor graduated from Madison Central High School in 1944. Victor proudly served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was united in marriage to Kathryn Jean Reddell on July 12, 1947. Victor was employed by the Wisconsin Telephone Company for 34 years, before early retirement in 1982. He was a lifelong resident of Madison/ Monona area, recently residing at Main Street Quarters in Oregon. Victor was an avid fan of the Badgers, Brewers and Packers and enjoyed traveling with his wife, Kathryn, especially to watch the Badgers play. Victor was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Madison, and a longtime member of The Telephone Pioneers of America, and the Elk's Lodge No. 410.

Victor is survived by, and will be greatly missed by, his loving wife of 63 years, Kathryn; children, Sandra Kaye (Gary) Shackelford of Oregon, Thomas Earl Leake (Margaret Toso) of Long Beach, Calif., and Tracey Jean (Fred) Kaltenberg of Sun Prairie; grandchildren, Rebecca (Fred) Clark of Oregon, Sara Cavanaugh (Clint Cockroft) of Monroe, Matthew and Michael Kaltenberg of Sun Prairie; two great-grandchildren, Bailey Clark and River Cockroft, who will miss their "Big Papa"; sister, Joyce (John) Skelly of Houston, Texas; sister-in-law, Gladys Leake of North Carolina, and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Earl Leake.

Obituary: Roselyn Celia (Schiavo) Amato - Class of 1944

MADISON - Roselyn C. Amato (nee Schiavo), age 84, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 9, 2010. She was the loving wife of the late Salvatore (Sam) Amato and loving grandmother of the late Stephen Wells.

Roselyn was born in Madison, on Feb. 7, 1926, to the late Anthony and Celia Schiavo. She was one of three children; the late James Schiavo and her loving sister and friend, Marian Skille.

A lifelong resident of Madison, she graduated from Central High School, married Sam Amato on Nov. 11, 1944, and during their 50 years together raised four children, Dominic Amato, Angela (Robert) Tramburg, A.J. Nino Amato and CeCe (Robert) Wells. She is the loving Nana of 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Aunt Roselyn is further survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Roselyn and her husband, Sam owned and operated Amato's Holiday House Restaurant for 43 years. During that time Roselyn's warm and welcoming personality afforded her the respect and friendship of those who knew her.

Her greatest joy and love in life, however was her family. Roselyn could light up a room with her presence, and at family gatherings, surrounded by her children and grandchildren, she would share lifelong stories and lessons with enduring compassion and a great sense of humor. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Roselyn was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church through most of her adult life. She found peace and comfort in her friend, Monsignor Ken Fiedler who will officiate at her funeral.

A very heartfelt thanks to the staff at HospiceCare Inc. of Madison for their endearing and compassionate care of Roselyn.

A Mass and celebration of Roselyn's life will be held on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 401 S. Owen Drive, Madison. Visitation be will held from 10:30 a.m. until Mass at noon, with interment at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, 2705 Regent St., Madison. Following interment, family and friends are invited to return to Our Lady Queen of Peace Church to join Roselyn's family for dinner.

Obituary: Richard D. Harrington - Class of 1944

MADISON - Richard D. Harrington, Marine Corps (Retired), age 84, passed away on March 12, 2010. He now joins his beloved wife, Grace who passed away January 30, 2007. He was born on June 17, 1925, in Madison, to Leo and Frances Harrington. He attended Holy Redeemer Grade School and graduated from Central High School where he was a member of the football team, President of Hi-Y and Junior Class President. He enlisted in the Marine Corps during World War II and served with the "C" Company 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment of the 1st Marine Division in the Pacific as a rifleman and flame thrower operator. After the war he served in China on occupation duty. He retired to the states and attended school for two years. He returned to active duty in 1950, and served during the Korean War and during Vietnam. He retired from the Marine Corps with 30 years service. He was a member of the 1st Marine Division Association, The Fleet Reserve Association and the China Marine Association. On December 20, 1947, he married the love of his life, classmate, Grace Elinor Batker. Together they raised four children, Jacqueline (Gary) Rockweiler of Verona, June (Mike) Goglio, Mike (Laura) Harrington and Patrick (Julie) Harrington, all of Madison. He was proud of all of his grandchildren, Renee (Rich) Wilson, Danielle Larson, Joshua and Frances Goglio, Nicholas and Jeffrey Harrington and Jenna and Jayci Harrington; also two great-grandchildren, Annika and Ethan Larson. Dick and Grace had a small painting and repair business, D and G, from 1974 -1994. Dick was an area football official and his crew worked in several championship games. He is survived by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Ken (Nell) Batker and their children, David, John, and Carol; and nieces, Janice (Jim) Rebne, Sharon Rock, and Joan Loshek. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Grace; his sister, Mary Loshek; brother-in-law, Robert Loshek; and his in-laws, Edward and Bertha Batker. Dick was a caregiver for his wife, Grace for over ten years as she fought her courageous battle with Alzheimer's. They were married over 59 years. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at the RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Sherman Ave., with Chaplain Steve Zwettler officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home on Saturday. Obituary: Kenneth G. Nachreiner - Class of 1944

MONONA - Kenneth G. Nachreiner, age 83, died on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, after a brief illness. He was born on Sept. 24, 1926, in Bear Valley, the tenth and youngest child of Herbert and Veronica (Volk) Nachreiner. The family moved to Madison in 1927, where Ken attended Holy Redeemer grade school and Central High School, graduating in June 1944. He was drafted into the U. S. Army in December 1944, and served 13 months in Manila, Philippines. On his separation from the armed forces in November 1946, Ken attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating in June 1950. He married Elaine Pschorr on May 30, 1951, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Madison. Together they raised five children. Ken began a career in Wisconsin state service in February 1951, and served 37 years, retiring from the Department of Health and Social Services. He was an avid reader and history buff, especially American history. Ken was most interested in the Civil War and World War II. He loved cars, enjoyed the happy times spent camping with family, and traveling throughout the United States. Ken is survived by his wife, Elaine; five children, Mark (Judy) of Madison, Paul (Deb), James "Butch" (Sally Jones) and Susan (John) Veserat, all of Monona, and Amy (Trace) Stovall of Colquitt, Ga.; grandchildren, Katie and Kyle Nachreiner, and Emily, Kelsey and Andrew Veserat; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Leonard, Walter, Louie, "Tom," Harold and Ralph; and three sisters, Irene, Frieda Dahlk and Marie. MADISON - Carol L. Selstad, age 80, passed away peacefully on Friday, Nov. 2, 2007, at Karmenta Care Center. She was born on April 14, 1927, in Madison, the daughter of Charles and Clara (Schwenn) Schroeder. Carol graduated from Central High School in 1944 and UW-Madison in 1948, with a degree in history. She married Clarence Selstad at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, on Sept. 6, 1952. Carol was employed by Selective Service and in her later years by Pirkle Freight Lines. For many years, she was a partner with her husband, Clarence, in his business, Monona Motors. Carol did volunteer work for the Madison Literary Council and enjoyed bowling, golf, bridge, travel and being with her family in her spare time. She is survived by her husband, Clarence; her three sons, Craig (Kathy) of Snellville, Ga., Mark of Pewaukee and Peter (Deborah) of Colgate; and three grandchildren, Christopher and Courtney of Snellville, Ga. and Amy of Colgate. Obituary: Grace Elinor (Batker) Harrington - Class of 1944

MADISON - Grace Elinor Harrington, age 81, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, after a long illness. She fought a courageous battle. She was born on Jan. 2, 1926, in Verona to Edward and Bertha (Gessler) Batker. She attended grade school thru 4th grade, then the family moved to Madison. She graduated from Madison Central High School in 1944, where she was a high honor roll student, winning many school honors and music awards. She attended UW-Madison for three years and on Dec. 20, 1947, she married classmate Richard Harrington. Together they raised four children. Grace worked for Madison Newspapers for 10 years and 16 years as an educational assistant at Madison East High School. Grace is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Richard "Dick" Harrington of Madison; and four children, Jacqueline (Gary) Rockweiler of Verona, June (Mike) Goglio of Madison, Michael (Laura) Harrington of Madison, and Patrick (Julie) Harrington of Madison. She loved all her grandchildren, Renee (Rich) Wilson, Danielle (Russel) Larson, Joshua and Frances Goglio, Nicholas and Jeff Harrington, Jenna and Jayci Harrington. She was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Annika and Ethan Larson. Grace is also survived by her brother, Ken (Nell) Batker and their children, David, John and Carol; her sister-in-law, Mary Loshek; and nieces, Janice, Sharon and Joan. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother-in-law, Robert Loshek; and in-laws, Leo and Frances Harrington. In keeping in with Grace's wishes, a private funeral and visitation will be held. Obituary: Milton M. Lemke - Class of 1944

MADISON - Milton M. Lemke, age 81, died on Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center. He was born on June 10, 1925, in Madison, to Charles and Flossie (Ellis) Lemke. Milton graduated from Madison Central High School. He served in the U. S. Naval Air Force during World War II. Milton married Lucille "Lu" DeRuyter on Aug. 28, 1947, in Sheboygan. He was a conductor for Chicago/ Northwestern Railroad for 38 years, retiring in 1983. Milton was a charter member of Lakeview Moravian Community Church, a member of V.F.W. Post No. 7591 and the Moose Club. He was proud to grow up in the "Bush," where he learned the color of a person's skin or their religious convictions didn't matter. A lesson Milton passed on to his children. His hardy laugh and long stride from years of walking the rails won't be forgotten. Milton is survived by two sons, Mark Lemke and Michael (Rose) Lemke, both of Madison; four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a sister, Doris Davis of Platteville; and four brothers, Clayton Carson, Robert Carson and Clair Carson, all of Madison, and Jack Carson of Tennessee. Obituary: Lorna Doone (Jackson) Borgwardt - Class of 1944

HARLINGEN, TEXAS/ MADISON - Lorna Doone Borgwardt, age 79, died on Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, at Valley Baptist Hospital, Harlingen, Texas, as a result of an emergency surgery. She was born Dec. 9, 1926, in Madison, the daughter of Christine (Pridat) and Ernest Jackson. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Harvey Borgwardt, now living with his daughter in Madison; her son, Heath Borgwardt of Maryland; her daughter, Ronna (Rick) Trapanese of Madison; and two grandsons, Dominic and Anthony. She also leaves behind many, many dear and wonderful friends; they were very precious to her. Lorna was an avid painter, sculptor and carver. She went to Central High School. She taught adult painting at Madison Area Technical College and University Extension and won numerous awards around the country for her beautiful artwork. Lorna had great faith and knew that someday she would be in the arms of her savior again. We picture her surrounded with butterflies and hummingbirds and angels all around her in the Lord's garden. We also imagine she will still be painting, no longer in pain, but free to explore her new world with a joyous heart. "I lift up my eyes to the hills-from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth." Psalm121:1-2. A memorial service was held in Harlingen Texas, Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006. Obituary: Claude Peter Banks - Class of 1944

MADISON - Claude Peter Banks, age 80, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center. He was born on May 18, 1925, in Madison, where he grew up in the Bush, son of Leroy Banks Sr. and Ozella (Smith) Banks. Peter attended Central High School and before completion of his senior year, was drafted in to the U.S. Navy. On his return home from the service, he was given an honorary diploma from Central High. Peter retired from Oscar Mayer after 41 years, and the Veteran's Hospital after 33 years of employment, before retiring to a full life of relaxation and bike riding. He was a long time member of St. Paul AME Church. Peter is survived by his sisters, Anna Hargons and Elsie (Watson) Wesbrooks; his daughters, Claudette Clay and Pat (Al) Minter; son, Michael (Ruth) Banks; daughters, Robin Banks, Jacqueline Banks, Merl Lynn Banks, Lisa Banks and Jasmine Banks; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Leroy Jr. (Ollie Mae) and Fred Banks. Funeral services will be held at ST. MADISON - Lois Ann Hammond, age 78, of Madison, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2005, at Legacy Gardens. She was born on June 22, 1926, in Madison, daughter of Gustave and Esther (Berg) Torgeson. She graduated from Central High, and then went on to Madison Business College. She married Lovell L. Hammond on Dec. 7, 1946, in Madison. Lois was a secretary for the Wisconsin Department of Revenue for 39 years, retiring in 1987. She was a past member of the Knitter's Guild, and a current member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church Choir and Esther Circle. Lois and Ham were also members of 4-Lakes Yacht Club, Monona. Lois is survived by her sister, Elizabeth (Paul) Markey of Arlington, Vt.; her brother, Ralph Torgeson of Madison; her niece, Carol Zwickey; her sister-in-law, Hilda Poole of Madison; and several nieces and nephews. Obituary: Francis "Joe" Schadauer - Class of 1944

MADISON - Francis "Joe" Schadauer died unexpectedly of a massive heart attack on Tuesday, June 7, 2005. He was born on Jan. 4, 1927, in Madison, to Julius and Anna (Haas) Schadauer. He attended grade school at Holy Redeemer School, and graduated with the class of 1944 from Central High School. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. Joe graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1950 as an electrical engineer, and especially enjoyed playing in the marching band. He married Louise Cooper on June 20, 1959, and they had one son, Michael. Joe spent most of his working years maintaining electronic equipment for the University of Wisconsin Medical School, retiring in 1993. He was a train buff and enjoyed riding the trains of U.S.A., Canada, Mexico and continental Europe. Joe was still playing softball and had spent Memorial Day weekend playing in the U.S.A. Volleyball Tournament in Denver with the over 75 league. He was an active member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, being an usher and Eucharistic Minister. He is survived by his wife, Louise; his son, Michael (Elise), and two grandsons, Wilson and Jonah, all of Minneapolis. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE CHURCH, 405 S. Owen Drive, Madison, on Friday, June 10, 2005, at 11 a.m. Monsignor Ken Fiedler and the Rev. Obituary: Donald "Gus" Burwell - Class of 1944

MADISON - Donald "Gus" Burwell, age 77, passed away at his home on Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, after a courageous battle with asbestosis and cancer. He was born on Nov. 6, 1926, in Madison, the son of Earl and Ghea Burwell. Gus was a lifelong Madisonian and a 1944 graduate of Central High. He enlisted in the Navy and served as a Seabee in the South Pacific. Upon completion of military service he became a master electrician and was a part of the construction of many of Madison's well-known buildings. Gus married Nancy Davis in 1956. She passed away in 1973. Gus is most known for his contributions to local baseball, his passion. He was a longtime player, manager and commissioner in the Madison Recreation leagues, winning numerous city and state titles in both fastpitch softball and basketball. Gus was a longtime member of The Madison Dug-out Club, serving as banquet chairman for the annual Greater Madison Brewer Banquet for more than 20 years. He also served as general manager for the Avenue Bar semi-pro baseball teams for 12 years, winning the state title in 1993. For his accomplishments, Gus was enshrined in the Madison Sports Hall of Fame this past June, an honor he truly cherished. Gus was a great family man, always there when needed to offer support and praise. For that, we are truly grateful. He especially enjoyed spending time with his three grandsons watching them grow to become successful adults. Dad, you leave a void in our collective hearts but we know that you have gone on to a special place to be with Mom. Survivors include sons, Mark (Kathi) of Appleton, Steve (Paula) of Rockford, and Chris (Jackie) of Waunakee; grandsons, Shawn (Angie), Brett and Ryan; and sister, Dorothy (Don) Annen of Madison. Baseball Booster Burwell Dies At 77

Gus Burwell, the driving force behind all matters baseball in thea rea for decades and a recent inductee to the Madison Sports Hall of Fame,died Monday after a fight with asbestosis and cancer. He was 77.

Burwell was best known in recent years as the chairman of the annual Greater Madison Brewer Banquet, a post he held for more than 20 years. As a key member of The Madison Dug-Out Club, he was also intensely involved with the defunct University of Wisconsin baseball program and promotion of the game at the grassroots level. A Madison native and graduate of Central High School, Burwell was a long time player, manager and commissioner on the city recreational leagues. For 12 years, he served as general manager of the Avenue Bar's semi-pro team, which was the summer home of many Badger players, including future major-leaguers Rodney Myers and Lance Painter. He guided Avenue Bar to the Wisconsin State League title in 1993.

In June, he became a member of the Hall of Fame, an honor he cherished."This is the pinnacle of everything I've done," he told The Capital Times then. "It makes me feel like I've done something for other people."

A visitation is scheduled today between 4 and 7 p.m. at Cress Funeral Home,6021 University Ave. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St.Mark's Lutheran Church, 605 Spruce St.

Obituary: Richard D. McVicar, Sr. - Class of 1944

WAUNAKEE - Richard D. McVicar Sr., age 76, died peacefully at home under hospice care on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003. He was born on Oct. 28, 1926, in Madison, to Angus and Genevieve (Milward) McVicar. He graduated from Central High School in 1944, attended Ripon College and entered the Army. He served in World War II in the Pacific Theater and the Korean conflict, and was a member of the Waunakee V.F.W. Post. He became a Boy Scout in 1938, earned the rank of eagle, and served the scouting program for decades. He was scoutmaster of four different troops, a Vigil Honor member of Tichora Lodge, and recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. Dick retired from Central Wisconsin Center, where he worked as a media specialist for 30 years. At age 60, he became an Emergency Medical Technician. He served with Waunakee Area EMS, later becoming a skill instructor for Madison Area Technical College and CPR instructor trainer for the American Heart Association. He received numerous community service awards. Dick was never far from his camera, and his dozens of photo albums of pictures of family, his beloved dogs and grand-dogs, scouting and church events, and of course of his travels to many lands. His Scottish heritage took him to Scotland many times. This love of photography was inherited from his father, Angus McVicar, and Dick was so very proud of the book "Double Take," by Zane Williams, which was recently published, and is a rephotographic survey of Madison of pictures taken by his father and Zane Williams. His family was his life. He is survived by Helen (Poulik), the woman who fell in love at first sight and became his wife and best friend of 38 years; daughter, Anne (George) Acker of Mazomanie; sons, Richard Jr. (Laurel Losenegger) of Middleton, and Stuart of Deerfield; granddaughters, Amanda and Danielle Acker, who were Papa's little princesses; sister, Charlotte (John) Larsen; several nieces and nephews; Sam and Diane Robinson, his adopted kids next door, and his faithful companion, Coney Girl. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Malcolm. He enjoyed a very active life, thanks to wonderful medical care by Dr. Ken Devries and the Waunakee clinic staff. STOUGHTON [Wisconsin] - Joyce Arlene (Flugum) Gauper, age 76, died on Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at home of cancer. She was born in Madison on April 14, 1926, the daughter of Burns and Hjordis (Arneson) Flugum. Joyce graduated from Madison Central High School and remained active in class of 1944 post-graduation activities. She graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in physical education in 1950. She taught in Elkhorn and Green Bay. On Oct. 8, 1955, she married Glen A. Gauper and they made their home in the Chicago area until retirement in 1986. While in Stoughton, Joyce was active in Garden Club, hardanger and Entre Nous. At Covenant Lutheran Church she participated in the Ladies Circle, quilting, and was an innovator and leader in the Church Women's Retreat. Joyce is survived by her husband, Glen; daughter, Patricia (Mark) Joseph, and grandson, Adam, of Champaign, Ill.; daughter, Pamela Gauper of Arlington Heights, Ill.; and son, Daniel (Lisa) Gauper, and grandchildren, Christopher and Emily Joyce, of Bloomington, Minn. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Marian (Norman) Seamonson; brother, Robert (Eileen) Flugum; and her stepfather, Samuel Mintz. MADISON [Wisconsin] - Mary M. Sullivan, age 76, of Madison, died on Monday, April 22, 2002, at a local hospital. She was born on April 7, 1926, in Cross Plains, the daughter of Michael and Gertrude (Boehnen) Endres. Mary graduated from Madison Central High School in 1944. She married William Sullivan on Aug. 6, 1949, at St. Raphael's Cathedral. Mary worked for the Department of Social Services. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, past director of Queen of Peace funeral choir, past director of Immaculate Heart of Mary funeral choir, a past member of the Queens Guild, and director of Glendale Neighborhood Association. Mary was an avid gardener, and enthusiastically supported her grandchildren's activities. Bill and Mary attended youth soccer, baseball, and basketball games, as well as children's concerts and plays. They were "adopted" as team grandparents for most of their grandchildren's events. Mary is survived by her sons, Pat (Kathryn) Sullivan of Madison, and Jerry (fiancee Sheri and her daughter, Vanessa) Sullivan of Middleton; five grandchildren, Andrew, Ian, Chelsea, Hannah and Libby; a sister, Katie (Fran) Wagner of Sun Prairie; two brothers, Michael (Anne) Endres of Sun Prairie, and James Endres of Florida; a sister-in-law, Barb Endres of Monona; and a brother-in-law, Dick (Pat) Sullivan of Madison.
