Obituary: Ralph W. "Pat" Loy - Class of 1926

MADISON - Ralph W. "Pat" Loy, age 100, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, at Middleton Village. Ralph, the son of Joseph and Anna Loy, was born on Feb. 25, 1908. He graduated from Madison Central High School in 1926. His long work career included employment at the First National Bank in Madison, Master Mix Feeds, and Central Soya. Ralph continued to work as a part time bookkeeper for Thysse Printing into his early 90s. He was a lifelong resident of the city of Madison. Ralph married the former Beatrice Qualle on Sept. 7, 1934. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church since 1940. Ralph was most proud of his many years as a member of Blackhawk Country Club. Golf was his passion and he was good at it. He walked the course, carrying his bag of clubs, well into his 80s and was known to say that, "Golf has kept us above ground." When he wasn't golfing, Ralph enjoyed family vacations to northern Wisconsin, and hunting and fishing trips to Canada. At age 100, it could truly be said of Ralph: You shall come to the grave at a full age, as a sheaf of grain ripens in its season (Job 5:26). Ralph is survived by his wife of 74 years, Beatrice of Madison; a son, Phil (Judy) Loy of Middleton; a daughter, Carol (Marv) Baerenwald of Antigo; and a son, Dennis (Deborah) Loy of Marquette, Mich. Grandchildren include Roger Albertson of Baraboo, Kim (Glen) Hameister of Berlin, Sara Carrick (husband, Mike Burie) of Sun Prairie, Patrick (Michelle) Loy of Mazomanie, and Erin (Dan) Kosarzycki of Mount Horeb; stepgrandchildren, Dawn (Bret) Loy and Scott (Robyn) Baerenwald; and great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Gregory and Brianna Hameister, Kara and Matthew Loy, and Ethan Carrick. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Howard. Private family services will be held. Obituary: Raymond E. "Ray" Gloe - Class of 1947

MADISON/ FORT MYERS, FLA. - Raymond E. "Ray" Gloe, age 79, of Madison and Fort Myers, Fla., died peacefully on Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at the HospiceCare Center. He was born on Aug. 19, 1929, in Two Rivers, the son of Edward and Clara (Geerdts) Gloe. Ray graduated from Madison Central High School in 1947 and later attended Madison Business College. He married Betty Gruber in 1950. She preceded him in death in 1974. Ray served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and in later years, was a past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7591 on Cottage Grove Road, where he was active for many years. He thoroughly enjoyed the friendships he had there. Ray was employed by Dairy Equipment for a number of years before joining Allstate Insurance, where he retired after 33 years as a senior agent. He served as president of the Monona Lions Club at one time and was instrumental in acquiring the Jaws of Life for the Monona Fire Department. Ray enjoyed many years of fishing, hunting, and golfing with family and friends. He is survived by his current wife, Shirley (Pogue) Gloe; his sons, Rick (Connie) Gloe of Green Bay and Ron (Sue) Gloe of Eau Claire; grandchildren, Cory, Ryan, Casey, Cal, Mandy and Jenny; a sister, Beatrice Keikbusch; two nephews, Steve and Dave; and a niece, Mary. Ray also leaves behind four step-children, John (Marianne) Pogue, Dan (Joni) Pogue, Lori Seals and Leslie (Jack) Herbrand; as well as their children and grandchildren. He was dearly loved by all of them. Most of all, Ray's greatest commitment in life was to Jesus Christ, his personal savior. He loved his church, Capitoland Christian Center and the many friends and extended family he had there. Ray was preceded in death by his wives, Betty and Beverly Hovey Gloe; his parents; and a grandson, Sean. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, with the Rev. Hermsmeier presiding. Military rites will be conducted. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., with a pass in review at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Obituary: Lee M. Wagner

MADISON - Lee M. Wagner, age 62, of Madison, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at HospiceCare. He was born on Feb. 21, 1946, in Madison, the son of Herman and Ella (Vant) Wagner. Lee was a friend to many. He helped to start the Madison Pool League, and enjoyed playing pool and talking. He was an amateur inventor, locksmith and wrote a manual on door closer repair and maintenance. Lee is survived by his loving wife, Bobbie; five children, Leesa Wagner, Linda Brown, Laurie Slack, Patty (Bob Lesch) McCollough and Tim McCollough; grandchildren, Brianna, Nathan, Michael, Elizabeth, Kaiena, Emily, Kristina, Karisma, Bronson, Brooke, Tarina, Devin; brother, Fred (Romelle) Wagner; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Christopher and Brandon; brother, Richard Wagner; sister, Barb Wagner. Obituary: Betty J. (Jolivette) Haakenson - Class of 1947

MARSHALL - Betty J. Haakenson, age 78, passed away on Wednesday, Sept, 10, 2008, at Helen's Happy Home in Deerfield. Betty was born on Dec. 21, 1929, in Abbotsford, the daughter of Edwin and Eda (Heggesta) Jolivette. She was a 1947 graduate of Central High School of Madison. On Aug. 25, 1955, she married Stanley Haakenson in Des Moines, Iowa, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 10, 1987. Betty and Stan farmed outside of Marshall until they moved into town in 1970. After being diagnosed with Alzheimers, Betty moved to Shady Rest and most recently Helen's Happy Home for the additional care that she needed. Betty was employed at Wisconsin Porcelain in Sun Prairie and she was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where she served on church council, taught Sunday School and was a WELCA member. Betty loved to bowl and was a diehard sports fan, following the Brewers, Badgers and Packers. Survivors include her children, Kim Haakenson of Green Bay, Sheri (Tim) Benson of Mauston and Harry (Kathy) Haakenson of Sun Prairie; five grandchildren, Angela (Kurt) Radloff, Melanie Lazers, Mark Benson, Kirk Benson and Erik Benson; her brothers and sister, Richard (Virginia) Jolivette of Fountain Hills, Ariz., June Carlson of Manhattan, Kan., and Wayne Jolivette of Cottage Grove; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was further preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Carol Paulson; and a brother, Arthur Jolivette. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at 6 p.m. at HOLY TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH in Marshall with Pastor Paul Anderson officiating. Family burial will be in Medina Cemetery. Family and friends may call on Monday from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the church. Betty was an avid reader and patron of the Marshall Library; memorials may be made to the Marshall Public Library or the charity of one's choice. Obituary: Helen N. (Neubauer) Thompson

MADISON - Helen N. Thompson, age 101, peacefully passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008. Helen was born in Baraboo, on Feb. 14, 1907, the daughter of Sigmund and Myra Neubauer. In 1918, the family moved to Madison, where Harold, Helen's bother was attending the University of Wisconsin. Helen graduated from Madison's Central High School and the Milwaukee Teacher's College, now UW-Milwaukee. She began her career as a first grade teacher at Emerson School in September 1928, where she continued until her retirement in February 1968. Helen married John Wesley Thompson on June 28, 1930. They built their home in Shorewood Hills in 1937 and spent wonderful years together until his death in December 1998. Through the years and until the time of her death, Helen remained in close contact with many of her former students and their families which gave her great happiness. Helen was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, a long time member of Madison Civics Club and Blackhawk Country Club, a former board member of Madison Symphony Orchestra League, the Shorewood Garden Club and Gourmet group. John and Helen were volunteers at Madison General Hospital (now Meriter) for many years. Helen is preceded by her husband, parents and her brother, Harold. She is survived by a nephew, John Neubauer of Arizona; a niece, Jeanne Walker of California; and a number of cousins. Helen is further survived by her dear neighbors and friends, who have been so good to her over the years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Helen's name to HospiceCare. Obituary: William R. "Pops" Werner - Class of 1938

MADISON - William R. "Pops" Werner, age 87, died on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at St. Mary's Care Center, surrounded by his family. He was born on Feb. 15, 1921, in Madison, the son of John and Martha (Curtis) Werner. Bill graduated from Central High School in 1938 and enlisted in the Army. He was discharged in October 1945. He was married to the former Phyllis Grimm, Jan. 31, 1943. He attended school at Madison Business College and later went to work for American Family Insurance; retiring after 38 years of service. Bill was a sports enthusiast, especially a Packers and Badgers fan. Bill enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors include five children, John "Jack" Werner of Mount Aire, Va., Jean (Rich) O'Donnell of Belvidere, Ill., Jim (Ginny) Werner of Madison, Jeff (Patty) Werner of Brooksville, Fla., and Janet (George) Rasmussen of Belleville; 10 grandchildren, Stephanie (Ross) Porter, Ryan (Deb) O'Donnell, Matt O'Donnell, Randy (Nancy) Werner, Dan (Colleen) Werner, Polly, Katie and Lucy Werner, and Angela and Kristi Klinger; five great-grandchildren, Kelli, Jessica, Jocelyn, Riley and Evelyn; a sister, Ruth Hamre of Madison; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Nancy. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Phyllis; two sisters, Bernice and Margaret; a brother, John; and a special nephew, Don Phillip. Obituary: William Scott Toebaas -Class of 1969

MADISON - William Scott Toebaas died unexpectedly of natural causes on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008. Born on May 27, 1951, Bill was a life-long resident of Madison. As a boy Bill loved fishing in Tenney Park, camping at Devil's Lake and summer vacations in the north woods of Wisconsin. Bill graduated from Central High School and attended the University of Wisconsin. He enjoyed participating in and watching all sports. As a high school athlete, he was named to the all-city football team and was a star baseball pitcher. Bill struggled with mental illness throughout his adult life. Although Bill struggled to cope with his own disability, his kind and gentle nature was obvious to those he interacted with, as he always wanted to help others in any way he could. Bill's unique and often brutally accurate perspective of life leaves us with a smile and an emptiness at the thought of what might have been. Bill is survived by his mother, Ruth Lieberman; and a sister, Anita, both of Madison. He is also survived by a brother, Jim of Sandpoint, Idaho; a sister, Dianna of McLean, Va.; and a nephew, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Theodore Toebaas; grandparents, Oscar and Inez Toebaas; and his stepfather, Joseph Lieberman. A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 312 Wisconsin Ave., Madison, with Pastor John Swanson officiating, with visitation from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service. Obituary: John E. Carden

POYNETTE/MADISON - John E. Carden, age 90, of Poynette, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at home. He was born on Feb. 9, 1918, in Madison, the son of John and Ida (Greenwood) Carden. John graduated from Madison Central High School. He married Nathalie Morse on June 29, 1941, at First Methodist Church in Madison. John worked for Madison Newspapers/Capital Times for more than 45 years, beginning as a paperboy and retiring as a mail room foreman. He was a member of Bashford United Methodist Church, and an assistant scout master of Boy Scout Troop No. 29, at Bashford. John was also a member of the Wisconsin Region Model A Ford Club and Model T Ford Club. He won first place and best of show with the Model A Roadster that he restored. John was an active spouse of a Telephone Pioneer, and enjoyed making and presenting gavels for each Telephone Pioneer president. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. John trained and showed his chocolate Labrador, winning several competitions. He volunteered at Meriter, St. Mary's and VA Hospitals, and March of Dimes Walk America. John is survived by his wife, Nathalie; daughter, Jeanne Mueller; grandchildren, Heather, Heidi and Kristoffer; three great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Lynn Carden; a sister, Dorothy Lloyd; beloved dog, Razz-ma-tazz; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, John E. Carden III; and a sister, Bernadine McCormick. Obituary: Jane E. Martin - Class of 1947

MADISON - Jane E. Martin died peacefully on Friday, Aug. 22, 2008, at Capitol Lakes Retirement Center, Madison. She was born Aug. 11, 1929, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Eugene and Elizabeth (Klewer) Martin. Jane graduated from Madison Central High School and began her career at Rayovac and later worked for the state of Wisconsin. She was employed in the Highway Division of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, where she advanced to an administrative position before her retirement. She volunteered in the gift shop at St. Mary's and Meriter hospitals for many years and was employed part time at the Monona branch of the Madison Public Library after retiring. Jane enjoyed golf, bowling, travel and was an avid Cubs fan. A member of St. Raphael's since childhood, Jane was a devout Catholic. She served as President of the Catholic Daughters of America and was active in many church related organizations including the St. Raphael Altar Society. She was associated with the Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary. Jane was a devoted daughter, caring for her mother for many years before her death in 1981. She was a loving aunt and cousin who had a keen interest in her extended family. Jane will be remembered as a kind, generous woman who loved and served God and her neighbor. She is survived by sister-in-law, Avis Martin; nephews, Dennis (Kim) Martin; Patrick (Lynn) Martin, and Brendan Martin, all of Mukwonago; a niece, Kate (Chris) Conrad, Milwaukee; a first cousin, Mary C. Foegen, Winona, Minn.; and other relatives and friends. Besides her parents, Jane was preceded in death by her brother, James J. Martin, in 2003, and two other brothers in infancy. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at ST. PATRICK'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 404 E. Main St., Madison, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Monsignor Kevin Holmes and the Rev. Monsignor Douglas Dushack concelebrating. A visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. Graveside services to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Obituary: Robert E. Fish - Class of 1934

TUCSON, ARIZ. - Robert E. Fish, age 92, died on Aug. 9, 2008, in Tucson, Ariz. He was born on Oct. 15, 1915, in Madison, Wis., the son of Anna Katherine (Bernard) and P.O. Fish. Bob attended Lincoln School, graduated from Central High School and the University of Wisconsin - Madison, where he was elected president of his sophomore class. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Bob served in World War II as a first lieutenant in the Army Transportation Corps. With the war's end he returned to Madison and joined his family business, Fish and Schulkamp Insurance, where he worked until his retirement. In 1956 Bob married Harriet Sisk of Madison; they raised four children. In 2003 Bob and Harriet moved from Madison, their longtime home, to Tucson to be near children. Bob truly treasured the friendship of his many friends. Important in his life were his poker club, his investment club, his hunting groups, his golf foursome, and his Minocqua cabin group. He served on the board of directors of the Madison Club, Maple Bluff Country Club, and the Village of Maple Bluff. Bob was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Jean Donkle, Lois Buettner, Doris Linton and Ann Sawyer Norman; his brother, John; and a grandson, Timothy Conners. He is survived by his wife, Harriet; his daughters, Sarah Perina (Robert) of York, Pa., Betsy Porter (Walter) and Laura Conners (Terry) of Tucson; a son, Robert Christian West of Madison, and nine grandchildren. Internment will take place in Madison in a family ceremony. Because the last fifteen years of Bob's life were deeply affected by his loss of eyesight, gifts in his memory may be made to the University of Wisconsin-Madison Foundation-Ophthalmology Department, P.O. Box 78807, Milwaukee, WI 53278, for macular degeneration research.
