Obituary: Ruth (Aberle) Godding

VERONA Ruth W. Godding, age 89, of Verona died on Friday, May 28, 2004. She was born on April 24, 1915, in the Township of Madison, the daughter of Max and Hattie (Schimming) Aberle. Ruth graduated from Franklin School and from Central High School in Madison. She was united in marriage to Charles "Les" Godding on Jan. 20, 1930, at Saint Raphael's Cathedral in Madison. They enjoyed 73 wonderful years of marriage together. She spent her years raising five beautiful children and their families. Her many passions included spending time with her family and friends, playing games, square dancing, and spending time at their cabin. She loved to help others in their time of need. Ruth is survived by her husband, Charles "Les" Godding; five children, Ruth (Don) Bongey of Verona, Donna (Don) Walter of Madison, Yvonne (Bob) Lake of North Carolina, Delores (Darrel) Reynolds of Madison, and Bill (Linda) Godding of Cross Plains; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Bob Aberle; a sister, Elenore Edwards; and a nephew, Norman Edwards. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at the JOYCE-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 118 N. Franklin Street, Verona, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Terry Peterson officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 1, 2004, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. Obituary: Carol Agnes King - Class of 1960

MADISON - Carol Agnes King, age 62, of Madison, died on Friday, May 21, 2004, at home. She was born on Aug. 30, 1942, in Madison, the daughter of Gordon and Margie (Rowell) King. Carol graduated from Madison Central High School. She was employed with the state of Wisconsin, Department of Revenue. Carol is survived by her sister, Barb (Joseph) Statz of Madison; a brother, Robert King of South Pasadena, Fla.; nieces, Lori (James) Oakley of Monona, and Karen (Mike) Bultman of Appleton; and a nephew, Fritz (Stephanie) Statz of Madison. She is further survived by other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Dale King. In honoring Carol's wishes, there will be no funeral services. Obituary: Charles "Chuck" Kowing - Class of 1936

ROCKFORD, ILL. - Charles "Chuck" Kowing, age 86, of Rockford, Ill., died on Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at Rockford Memorial Hospital. He was born on Sept. 8, 1917, in Madison, to his parents, Rose Esther (O'Brien) and Frank P. Kowing. He graduated from Madison Central High School in 1936. He began an apprenticeship in carpentry with J.H. Findorff and Company where he did millwork for Frank Lloyd Wright during the late 1930s and early 1940s. He was married on Nov. 20, 1940, to Shirley Oler Kowing, his wife of 54 years. He lived 46 years in Rockford, coming from Madison. He was a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He received basic training in Missouri and flight training at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. He served in World War II in Algeria, North Africa. He was a self employed carpenter and painter of Trussoni and Kowing Construction Company from 1960 until 1974. He was volunteer fireman of the North West Fire Protection from 1963 until 1997, during which time he became president of the board of trustees. After retiring, he worked with his late wife at the Loft Antique Shop. On Jan. 1, 1997, Charles remarried Mary (Rubey) Kowing in Chicago, Ill. He was also a member of Forest City Woodcrafters and for the last years of his life, he and Mary were a host family to foreign exchange students. He was a host father through the American Field Service to Kwabena "Murphy" Ofori of Ghana, Rodrigo Paz of Bolivia, Ryo Yasue of Japan, and Jose Zapata of Peru. He was also a member of St. Chad's Episcopal Church. Survivors include his wife, Mary Kowing; brothers, Gordon (Carol) Kowing of Madison, and Loren (Janet) Kowing of Madison; several nieces; nephews; and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his former wife, Shirley Kowing; brothers, Dallas, Warren and Richard; and a sister, Lorraine. A funeral service for Charles will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, 2004, at EMMANUEL EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 412 N. Church St., Rockford, Ill., with the Rev. KyungJa Oh officiating. Burial will be at Willwood Burial Park. A visitation will be held at the FITZGERALD FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, 3910 N. Obituary: Catherine M. Collins

MADISON - Catherine M. Collins, "Kay" to her many friends, age 96, died on Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Attic Angel Place, where she was a resident for 15 years. She was born on April 30, 1907, in Madison, the daughter of William H. and Dora (Kinney) Collins. Except for two years teaching in Antigo and three years of working in New York City, she spent all of her life in Madison. She graduated from St. Patrick's Grade School, Madison Central High School and University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she received a B.A. and an M.A. degree. She taught speech and English at East Junior High School and later joined the guidance department at East High School, where she was a school counselor until her retirement in 1972. After retirement she engaged in many volunteer activities, among them, guiding and ushering at the Civic Center. But the thing that made her the happiest was volunteer teaching as an aide on the primary level at St. Patrick's and Lapham schools and then for 20 years at Blessed Sacrament School. For almost her entire life she has been a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Madison and participated in many activities there. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy DeWitt; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; and their wives, William K. (Dorothy Adams), John C. (Kathleen Tyler), Paul C. (Burdette Williams), Joseph S. (Helen Hodgson), and Joan Crary; and brother-in-law, Thomas DeWitt. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 30, 2004, at ST. PATRICK'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 404 E. Main St., with Bishop George Wirz officiating. Obituary: David Loy - Class of 1964

STOUGHTON - David H. Loy died on April 16 in Kindred Hospital in Greenfield. He had been battling heart problems for many years and had been in hospitals and a rehabilitation center for over four months. He was born in Madison on April 24, 1945. David grew up in Madison and graduated from Central High School in 1964. He worked for many years as a bartender in Madison. For most of those years, he tended bar at the Caribou Tavern until he had to quit working because of his heart condition. David, from a young age, raised various breeds of pigeons and won many awards for them. He was a member of the Rock River Racers Pigeon Club and had belonged to other Wisconsin racing clubs over the years. For the last seven years, he resided in Stoughton. David is survived by his brothers, William Loy of Knoxsville, Tenn., Richard Loy of Greendale; his sister, Jean Swanson of St. Michael, Minn; and eight nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Dorothy (Effinger) Loy. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at THE RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Obituary: Vito Cuccia

MADISON/ MAUSTON - Vito S. Cuccia, age 80, died on Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at his home in New Lisbon. He was born on Aug. 27, 1923, in Madison, the son of Nicolo and Francesca (Stassi) Cuccia. Vito attended Madison Central High School. He married the former Alma Cornell on June 3, 1987. Vito worked for the city of Madison in maintenance for 36 years. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Alma; three daughters, Rosemary, Lonna and Debbie; six grandchildren, Keith, James, Vicki, Juanita, Lisa and Laura; two great-grandsons, Russell and Trenton; a sister, Georgia; and two brothers, Sam Cuccia and John Cuccia. Vito was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Juanita; and two brothers. Obituary: William H. Hughes - Class of 1936

MADISON/ RICHLAND CENTER - William H. Hughes, age 85, died peacefully on Friday, March 19, 2004. He was born on July 29, 1918, the younger of twin sons, to Raymond R. and Lillian (Ross) Hughes. He was united in marriage to Lorraine E. Finnegan, daughter of Dr. Bernard T. and Alma (Waldorf) Finnegan, on July 17, 1948. He was an employee of the state of Wisconsin, serving in various departments for 32 1/2 years. He was employed as a municipal accountant/auditor, an income tax auditor, supervisor of credit unions for the office of the Commissioner of Banking and was appointed by Governor Patrick Lucey for two terms as Wisconsin's first Commissioner of Credit Unions. He served in that capacity under Governors Lucey, Schreiber and Dreyfus. He was also manager of the Oscar Mayer Credit Union for 10 years and was active in the Credit Union Movement for 30 years. He received many honors and awards for his service to credit unions including election by his peers as president of the National Association of the State Credit Union Supervisors. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lorraine; his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. William H. (Carol) Hughes of Greendale; his daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen M. (Timothy) Keller of the town of Haney, Crawford County; grandchildren, Anne, Patrick and Maureen Hughes, and Elizabeth, Benjamin, Matthew and Sarah Keller; nephews, Robert L. (Judy) Hughes of Waunakee, Michael (Kathy) Hughes of Madison, and Kevin (Mary) Hughes of Middleton. He was preceded in death by his parents; and twin brother, Robert L. (Lucille) Hughes, Brigader General, Retired. A memorial Mass will be held at noon on Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 401 S. Obituary: Helen (Brown) White

MADISON/ STOUGHTON - Helen M. White, age 103, died on Thursday, March 11, 2004. She was one of 10 children born to Irish immigrant parents, the late Mary McShane and Patrick Brown, in the town of Dunkirk, Dane County. She resided in Madison for most of her life. She attended St. Raphael Grade School, Madison Central High School, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before her marriage to Francis B. White, on Sept. 15, 1927, she was secretary to Dr. Joseph S. Evans, Director of the University Hospital. Her husband preceded her in death on Sept. 24, 1974. For several years she supervised a group of clerks and stenographers at the Department of Natural Resources. Later she served as administrative assistant at the UW School of Social Work. She retired in 1967. After retirement, she worked as receptionist and secretary at St. Raphael Cathedral Rectory. She served there for 20 years. While at St. Raphael's, she was a member of their council and was a lector and commentator. She worked as a volunteer at the Madison Area Technical College, teaching English to refugees. She also did volunteer work for the Madison Police Department. Through the years she was active with the Girl Scouts and Parent-Teacher Associations, serving as secretary of the Madison Council of PTA's. On June 20, 1988, Madison Downtown Rotary awarded her the Rotary's Senior Service Award for outstanding community service. She was a member of Madison Civics Club, Madison Catholic Women's Club, St. Raphael Altar Society, and Catholic Order of Foresters. Helen traveled extensively and visited Ireland, a country she loved, several times. She is survived by two sons, Neal C. (Eileen) White of Cudahy, and Jerry White of Madison; a daughter, Mary Nelson of Madison; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; six sisters; three brothers; a son, John F. White; and a son-in-law, DuWayne Nelson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. RAPHAEL'S CATHEDRAL, 222 W. Main St., Madison, on Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at 10 a.m. with Monsignor Paul Swain officiating. Friends may visit on Tuesday at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will be at Resurrection Chapel. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Nazareth House for the three years of loving care they provided. I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. Obituary: Stephen William Beld - Class of 1939

MADISON - Stephen William Beld, age 82, died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, March 2, 2004. A lifetime resident of Madison, he was born on July 18, 1921. He and his wife, Angeline Parisi, enjoyed 55 years of marriage together. Steve grew up on the south side and graduated from Central High in 1939. During high school he was a paperboy and then worked at Rennebohm's on the Square. Steve was a member of the 32nd Red Arrow Infantry Division-Company G during World War II from 1940 through 1945. He served in the Paupuan, southern Philippines, Luzon, and New Guinea campaigns, receiving the Presidential Unit Citation Badge. Following his discharge, he was employed at the University of Wisconsin as an electrician until 1977. Steve enjoyed reading, music, and spending time with family, neighbors, and friends. He and his family regularly made trips to northern Wisconsin and around the United States and Canada. In his free time, Steve spent many hours in his basement workshop and dabbled with oil painting, gardening, golf, and many other hobbies. He was proud to help assemble the large tile mural of Christ's life at Midvale Lutheran Community Church. He lived his life with dignity, courage, and good humor. Surviving Steve are his wife, Angie; daughters, Susan and Joan (Jon Curti); grandchildren, Jennifer, Julie and Peter; sister, Anna Haessig (Robert); brother, Bill (Alyce); and many nieces and nephews. His parents; sister, Grace Faust; and brothers, Ambrose, Joe, Fritz, and George, are in Heaven to welcome him. Obituary: Howard David Yaskal - Class of 1959

BELLEVILLE - Howard David Yaskal, age 62, passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004. Howard was born in Liberty, N.Y. on Aug. 20, 1941, the son of Arthur and Bessie (Schackter) Yaskal. He graduated from Central High School, in Madison, in 1959. Howard served in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 until 1965 when he returned to Madison. He was united in marriage to Maureen McAuliffe on Nov. 3, 1973, in Carbondale, Ill. Howard loved being with his wife, his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Maureen; a son, Jonathan (Brenda), and their sons, Joseph and Benjamin, of Cottage Grove; a daughter, Jessica (Russell Jr.) Menendez of New Glarus, and their daughter due to be born in May; and a brother, Steve (Barbara) of Florida.
