Obituary: Eleanor Louise Jones Smith - Class of 1928

MADISON - Eleanor Louise Smith, age 93, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at Meriter Health Care Center, Madison. Eleanor was born in Dodgeville on Feb. 5, 1911, to Lewis Elmer and Sarah (Owens) Jones. Eleanor grew up in Madison, and she graduated from Central High School and UW-Madison. In 1942, she married Edward J. Smith, who later served as a Dane County supervisor and chairman of the Dane County Board. They lived in Mount Horeb, where she taught civics, French and Latin at Mount Horeb High School for many years. Eleanor later served as hall advisor at Chadbourne and Barnard Halls and for the University of Wisconsin Summer Music Clinic until her retirement in 1976. Eleanor was a lifetime member of the Starlite Chapter, No. 283, of the Order of the Eastern Star, and was a past worthy high priestess and life member of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Madison Shrine No. 6. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and dining out. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed, in 1962; her father, in 1952; her mother, in 1978; and her brother, William Owens Jones, in 1992. Eleanor is survived by her sister-in-law, Colleen Jones of Madison; two nieces, Marianne (Neil) Fauerbach of Madison, and Nancy Jones of Beaver Dam; a nephew, Barry (Mary) Jones of Madison; and six great-nieces and great-nephews, Colleen and Erin Fauerbach, Eric and Andy Davis, and Hannah and Grace Jones. A visitation will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at LULLOFF-PETERSON-HOUCK FUNERAL HOME, Dodgeville. Following the visitation, there will be a procession to East Side Cemetery for a committal service at noon, where Pastor Jean Bartlett will officiate.
