Obituary: Norman D. Dawson - Class of 1949

WYOCENA - Norman D. Dawson, age 77, passed away on Friday, Oct. 17, 2008. Norman was born on June 18, 1931 in Madison, the son of Harry M. and Leone (Stargardt) Dawson. Norm graduated from Central High in Madison, He served his country in the Marine Corps from 1951 until 1954 in the Korean War receiving a purple heart. He was united in marriage to Marlene for 19 years.Norm worked for the U.S. Government as a Postal Carrier. He carried mail on rural routes in Madison then in Windsor. Norm was an avid outdoorsman. His hobbies included hunting and fishing. Norm was known for his kind spirit and helping others in their recovery process of alcoholism. He was a leader in the AA program, and spoke on many occasions at the prison about the 12 step program. He is survived by his son, Michael Dawson of DeForest; his daughter, Doris "De" (Clifford "Tipper") Otis; granddaughter, Tanya Meyers; grandson, Chad Teubert; great-grandchildren, Samantha, Taylor and Amelia; other relatives and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Harry. Funeral services for Norman Dawson will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, at 11 a.m. at SMITH FUNERAL HOME in Pardeeville. Pastor Charles Case will officiate. Burial will follow in the Wyocena Cemetery. Full military rites will be presented by the Pardeeville American Legion Post 215 and the Pardeeville Veterans of Forein Wars Post. Visitation for Norm will be held on Monday evening from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home in Pardeeville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name. The Smith Funeral home in Pardeeville is serving the family.

Obituary: Bonnie Marie (Schaub) Hocking - Class of 1956

MADISON - Bonnie Marie Hocking, age 69, died on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at HospiceCare. She was born Nov. 3, 1938, in Madison, the daughter of George and Jane (Doran) Schaub. She was a lifetime member of St. James Catholic Church and attended grade school there. She graduated from Central High School in 1956. Bonnie married Gordon Hocking in 1956. Bonnie was very proud of her grandchildren. Bonnie worked tirelessly catering for Ella's Deli and as an owner of Ella's with the love of her life Gordy. Bonnie was also a devoted employee of Dean Medical until her illness this year. Survivors include three daughters, Georgia (Bob) Clifford, Mary Lou (Dale) Rogers and Bobbette (Rod Keller) Hocking, all of Madison; seven grandchildren, Tina (Jennifer), Brian and Bonnie Rogers, Tonja (Jeff) St. Arnauld, Gordon (Michele), Audrey Clifford, Nathan Hocking and Ethan Carlson; a great-grandchild, Ava; a brother, Paul (Margaret) Schaub; two sisters, June (Peter) Sturgis and Doran (Ron) Holl; a special aunt, Audrey; nieces and nephews; and several cousins and friends. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gordy; an infant daughter, Audrey; and a sister, Betsy Alt. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. JAMES CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1134 St. James Court, Madison, on Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at 11 a.m. Monsignor Thomas Baxter will officiate with burial in Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Obituary: Jill Ann Schiro Jamison - Class of 1968

WINNETKA, ILL./MADISON - Jill Ann Schiro Jamison, age 57, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, at Midwest Palliative and Hospice Care in Winnetka, Ill. Born and raised in Madison, Jill was a longtime resident. In 1979, she met and married Scott Jamison, also of Madison, and moved to Lexington, Kentucky to share their love of horses. In Lexington, both Jill and Scott worked at the fabled Spendthrift Farms. Jill's fondest memories from that period were of watching the foals romping with their mothers in the morning mist. In 1981 the couple's daughter Tyler was born. The family moved back to Wisconsin to start a horse farm on the Jamison country homestead in Muscoda, where their son Sean was born in 1984. During this time, they were owners in a racehorse, Hurdy Gurdy Man, trained by Wayne Lucas, and often raced by the renowned jockey, Angel Cordera. When Scott was offered a job as marketing manager for a thoroughbred track in Oklahoma, the family followed him there. Eventually, they returned to the Midwest, and resided in Winnetka, Illinois where Jill thoroughly enjoyed the role of wife and mother. Not ready to become an empty nester, when the children went off to college so did Jill, becoming house mother to the Delta-Delta-Delta sorority on Langdon Street, commuting between Madison and Winnetka. In those days, it was easy to find the "Tri Delt" house; the one with the spotless front yard. Jill worked tirelessly on that house, planting flowers, keeping greenery in front door pots, and making sure the girls all felt pride in their home away from home. The overarching theme of Jill's life was that of mother. She took immense pride in her role. Mother to her two wonderful children, Tyler and Sean. Mother to the foals she brought into the world. Mother to her sorority "daughters." Mother to her pets, Kodie and Spencer. Mother to her numerous nieces and nephews who have learned to care for others as she cared for them. During her illness, Jill became mother to herself balancing traditional and alternative treatments in her own way. She impressed dozens of healthcare workers of all disciplines with her tireless dedication to her health, nutrition and mind-body work. And they routinely went out of their way to help her on her journey. Jill is survived by her husband, Scott; her children, Tyler and Sean; her mother, Audrey Yost; her sisters, Jan (Schiro) Bawden and Carrie Schiro; and her brothers, Paul Schiro and Brian Schiro, and their families. She is preceded in death by her father, Damian. The family extends a grateful thank you to Jill's hospice team, Jan, Margaret, and Dr. Katz, and the entire staff of Midwest Palliative and Hospice Care, and Jill's spiritual guide, Bonnie Speno of Northshore Healing, who helped fill Jill's journey with dignity and grace. Obituary: Sandra Edge Johnson Emerson - Class of 1961

STOUGHTON - Sandra Edge Johnson Emerson, age 66, passed away on Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, at her home surrounded by her family, due to lung cancer. She was born on May 28, 1942, the sixth of eight children to Carlos and Marion (Lincoln) Edge. Sandy graduated from Central High School. She enjoyed working in her yard, traveling, and gambling. Sandy will be greatly missed by her two shih tzus, TT and Freeway. She worked for many years in shipping and receiving for Cummins of Stoughton. Sandy is survived by her two sons, Scott (Lisa) Johnson and their daughter, Tonika, all of Seattle, Wash., and Jeff Johnson of Milwaukee; siblings, Patricia (Don) Easland, Carlos (Shirley) Edge, Peter (Jean) Edge, Gary (Caty) Edge, and Ginny Hoff; her stepfather, Ruben Hoff; and many relatives, friends, and cheerful neighbors. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Linda Gullickson and Theresa Winkler. Private family services will be held at a later date. Obituary: Ralph W. "Pat" Loy - Class of 1926

MADISON - Ralph W. "Pat" Loy, age 100, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, at Middleton Village. Ralph, the son of Joseph and Anna Loy, was born on Feb. 25, 1908. He graduated from Madison Central High School in 1926. His long work career included employment at the First National Bank in Madison, Master Mix Feeds, and Central Soya. Ralph continued to work as a part time bookkeeper for Thysse Printing into his early 90s. He was a lifelong resident of the city of Madison. Ralph married the former Beatrice Qualle on Sept. 7, 1934. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church since 1940. Ralph was most proud of his many years as a member of Blackhawk Country Club. Golf was his passion and he was good at it. He walked the course, carrying his bag of clubs, well into his 80s and was known to say that, "Golf has kept us above ground." When he wasn't golfing, Ralph enjoyed family vacations to northern Wisconsin, and hunting and fishing trips to Canada. At age 100, it could truly be said of Ralph: You shall come to the grave at a full age, as a sheaf of grain ripens in its season (Job 5:26). Ralph is survived by his wife of 74 years, Beatrice of Madison; a son, Phil (Judy) Loy of Middleton; a daughter, Carol (Marv) Baerenwald of Antigo; and a son, Dennis (Deborah) Loy of Marquette, Mich. Grandchildren include Roger Albertson of Baraboo, Kim (Glen) Hameister of Berlin, Sara Carrick (husband, Mike Burie) of Sun Prairie, Patrick (Michelle) Loy of Mazomanie, and Erin (Dan) Kosarzycki of Mount Horeb; stepgrandchildren, Dawn (Bret) Loy and Scott (Robyn) Baerenwald; and great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Gregory and Brianna Hameister, Kara and Matthew Loy, and Ethan Carrick. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Howard. Private family services will be held. Obituary: Raymond E. "Ray" Gloe - Class of 1947

MADISON/ FORT MYERS, FLA. - Raymond E. "Ray" Gloe, age 79, of Madison and Fort Myers, Fla., died peacefully on Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at the HospiceCare Center. He was born on Aug. 19, 1929, in Two Rivers, the son of Edward and Clara (Geerdts) Gloe. Ray graduated from Madison Central High School in 1947 and later attended Madison Business College. He married Betty Gruber in 1950. She preceded him in death in 1974. Ray served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and in later years, was a past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7591 on Cottage Grove Road, where he was active for many years. He thoroughly enjoyed the friendships he had there. Ray was employed by Dairy Equipment for a number of years before joining Allstate Insurance, where he retired after 33 years as a senior agent. He served as president of the Monona Lions Club at one time and was instrumental in acquiring the Jaws of Life for the Monona Fire Department. Ray enjoyed many years of fishing, hunting, and golfing with family and friends. He is survived by his current wife, Shirley (Pogue) Gloe; his sons, Rick (Connie) Gloe of Green Bay and Ron (Sue) Gloe of Eau Claire; grandchildren, Cory, Ryan, Casey, Cal, Mandy and Jenny; a sister, Beatrice Keikbusch; two nephews, Steve and Dave; and a niece, Mary. Ray also leaves behind four step-children, John (Marianne) Pogue, Dan (Joni) Pogue, Lori Seals and Leslie (Jack) Herbrand; as well as their children and grandchildren. He was dearly loved by all of them. Most of all, Ray's greatest commitment in life was to Jesus Christ, his personal savior. He loved his church, Capitoland Christian Center and the many friends and extended family he had there. Ray was preceded in death by his wives, Betty and Beverly Hovey Gloe; his parents; and a grandson, Sean. Obituary: Lee M. Wagner

MADISON - Lee M. Wagner, age 62, of Madison, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at HospiceCare. He was born on Feb. 21, 1946, in Madison, the son of Herman and Ella (Vant) Wagner. Lee was a friend to many. He helped to start the Madison Pool League, and enjoyed playing pool and talking. He was an amateur inventor, locksmith and wrote a manual on door closer repair and maintenance. Lee is survived by his loving wife, Bobbie; five children, Leesa Wagner, Linda Brown, Laurie Slack, Patty (Bob Lesch) McCollough and Tim McCollough; grandchildren, Brianna, Nathan, Michael, Elizabeth, Kaiena, Emily, Kristina, Karisma, Bronson, Brooke, Tarina, Devin; brother, Fred (Romelle) Wagner; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Christopher and Brandon; brother, Richard Wagner; sister, Barb Wagner. Obituary: Betty J. (Jolivette) Haakenson - Class of 1947

MARSHALL - Betty J. Haakenson, age 78, passed away on Wednesday, Sept, 10, 2008, at Helen's Happy Home in Deerfield. Betty was born on Dec. 21, 1929, in Abbotsford, the daughter of Edwin and Eda (Heggesta) Jolivette. She was a 1947 graduate of Central High School of Madison. On Aug. 25, 1955, she married Stanley Haakenson in Des Moines, Iowa, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 10, 1987. Betty and Stan farmed outside of Marshall until they moved into town in 1970. After being diagnosed with Alzheimers, Betty moved to Shady Rest and most recently Helen's Happy Home for the additional care that she needed. Betty was employed at Wisconsin Porcelain in Sun Prairie and she was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where she served on church council, taught Sunday School and was a WELCA member. Betty loved to bowl and was a diehard sports fan, following the Brewers, Badgers and Packers. Survivors include her children, Kim Haakenson of Green Bay, Sheri (Tim) Benson of Mauston and Harry (Kathy) Haakenson of Sun Prairie; five grandchildren, Angela (Kurt) Radloff, Melanie Lazers, Mark Benson, Kirk Benson and Erik Benson; her brothers and sister, Richard (Virginia) Jolivette of Fountain Hills, Ariz., June Carlson of Manhattan, Kan., and Wayne Jolivette of Cottage Grove; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was further preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Carol Paulson; and a brother, Arthur Jolivette. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at 6 p.m. at HOLY TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH in Marshall with Pastor Paul Anderson officiating. Family burial will be in Medina Cemetery. Family and friends may call on Monday from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the church. Betty was an avid reader and patron of the Marshall Library; memorials may be made to the Marshall Public Library or the charity of one's choice. Obituary: Helen N. (Neubauer) Thompson

MADISON - Helen N. Thompson, age 101, peacefully passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008. Helen was born in Baraboo, on Feb. 14, 1907, the daughter of Sigmund and Myra Neubauer. In 1918, the family moved to Madison, where Harold, Helen's bother was attending the University of Wisconsin. Helen graduated from Madison's Central High School and the Milwaukee Teacher's College, now UW-Milwaukee. She began her career as a first grade teacher at Emerson School in September 1928, where she continued until her retirement in February 1968. Helen married John Wesley Thompson on June 28, 1930. They built their home in Shorewood Hills in 1937 and spent wonderful years together until his death in December 1998. Through the years and until the time of her death, Helen remained in close contact with many of her former students and their families which gave her great happiness. Helen was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, a long time member of Madison Civics Club and Blackhawk Country Club, a former board member of Madison Symphony Orchestra League, the Shorewood Garden Club and Gourmet group. John and Helen were volunteers at Madison General Hospital (now Meriter) for many years. Helen is preceded by her husband, parents and her brother, Harold. She is survived by a nephew, John Neubauer of Arizona; a niece, Jeanne Walker of California; and a number of cousins. Helen is further survived by her dear neighbors and friends, who have been so good to her over the years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Helen's name to HospiceCare. Obituary: William R. "Pops" Werner - Class of 1938

MADISON - William R. "Pops" Werner, age 87, died on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at St. Mary's Care Center, surrounded by his family. He was born on Feb. 15, 1921, in Madison, the son of John and Martha (Curtis) Werner. Bill graduated from Central High School in 1938 and enlisted in the Army. He was discharged in October 1945. He was married to the former Phyllis Grimm, Jan. 31, 1943. He attended school at Madison Business College and later went to work for American Family Insurance; retiring after 38 years of service. Bill was a sports enthusiast, especially a Packers and Badgers fan. Bill enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors include five children, John "Jack" Werner of Mount Aire, Va., Jean (Rich) O'Donnell of Belvidere, Ill., Jim (Ginny) Werner of Madison, Jeff (Patty) Werner of Brooksville, Fla., and Janet (George) Rasmussen of Belleville; 10 grandchildren, Stephanie (Ross) Porter, Ryan (Deb) O'Donnell, Matt O'Donnell, Randy (Nancy) Werner, Dan (Colleen) Werner, Polly, Katie and Lucy Werner, and Angela and Kristi Klinger; five great-grandchildren, Kelli, Jessica, Jocelyn, Riley and Evelyn; a sister, Ruth Hamre of Madison; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Nancy. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Phyllis; two sisters, Bernice and Margaret; a brother, John; and a special nephew, Don Phillip.
